I’m quite curious who Tampa is looking at to fill the assistant coach vacancy. It’s been hush-hush on the matter, as no reports have indicated anything. Tampa is like a vault when it comes to information on things.
@FeeltheThunder — Maybe they want to keep it under wraps to prevent other teams from poaching their primary/secondary/tertiary candidates before they can be interviewed. Either that, or they’ve taken that old Johnny Rivers tune from 1966 to heart, “Secret Agent Man”. Spices things up in the offseason.
@Mac – Oh, you’re correct on your point on Tampa keeping things under wraps from not letting other teams know their agenda as they do this with every aspect of their organization. They have been doing things this way since Stevie Yzerman came in as GM & Julien BriseBois has just continued it. Even top NHL insider Elliott Friedman has stated Tampa is like a vault with their information. From an organizational standpoint, it makes sense as there is a method to their madness but, from a fan perspective, it can be a little aggravating & drive you with anticipation.
Is there a limit on how many assistant coaches a team can have? Or is it up to them on how much they want to spend? Washington has 4 but some only have 2. In any event this was a fun list to look through.
No limit. Standard operating procedure is three – usually one for defensemen, one for PK, one for PP/forwards. That’s how the Caps operate too, they just have a skills coach in McCudden labeled as a full-fledged assistant.
Teams with two will consolidate defense/PK to one AC.
Awesome! Thanks for the info!
TIL: Davis Payne is still around.
Took over a Blues team as HC when Paul Kariya was teammates with David Perron and T.J. Oshie 😂
I don’t remember him ever having a HC job again. And that was like 15 years ago.
(I think those were the Andy McDonald years in STL as well.)
They were, and he has not, although he did win a Cup with the Kings as an AC in 2014
Wow, never realized how many ex-players were employed as Assistants/Goalie coaches. Def a lot of familiar names.
