The Florida Panthers have acquired defenseman Seth Jones from the Chicago Blackhawks, per Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. The full trade sends Jones and a 2026 fourth-round pick to the Panthers for goaltender Spencer Knight and a 2026 first-round pick, per Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff. The first-round pick will become a 2027 pick if Florida decides to trade their 2026 pick in another deal, per Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. Additionally, Chicago is retaining 26.3% of Jones’ hefty $9.5MM cap hit, per Chris Johnston of The Athletic.
The Blackhawks have made the deal official.
This marks the first blockbuster deal of true Trade Deadline season. Jones has been vocal about his desire for a move in the weeks leading up to the deadline, though he never requested a formal trade. Nonetheless, Chicago will find a great match in the contending Florida Panthers. It’s not the landing spot many expected, after Jones shared publicly that he’d welcome a return to the Columbus Blue Jackets, where he previously spent six years.
Jones’ $9.5MM cap hit has stood as the barrier to any moves over the last few seasons. His presence, even at a reduced $7.0MM cap hit, will cash-strap the Panthers for the rest of the season. They now have only $629K in available deadline cap space, per PuckPedia.
Jones will be worth the investment, though. He’s been the clear-cut number-one defender in front of a rebuilding Chicago for the last four seasons. Jones confidently led all Blackhawks defenders in scoring this season, with seven goals and 27 points in 42 games. It’s his highest scoring pace since the 2021-22 campaign – his first year in Chicago – when he scored 51 points in 78 games. His totals dwindled in the ensuing two seasons, with Jones netting 37 points in 2022-23 and 31 points last year. But while his scoring captures plenty of attention, Jones’ defensive play has stood as a glaring weakness. He has a minus-18 this season – slightly worse than the minus-15 he posted last year but far improved from a minus-37 and minus-38 in his first two years as a Blackhawk. While serving as the ice time leader on a perennial bottom-team will certainly drive those numbers down, Chicago has found their best success when Jones is flanked by a defensive specialist like Alex Vlasic.
If any team can afford Jones’ all-offense, no-defense style – it’s the Florida Panthers. They ceded top-pair defender Brandon Montour to the Seattle Kraken in this year’s free agent market. That left Aaron Ekblad and Gustav Forsling standing alone on a defense that won last year’s Stanley Cup on the back of a tremendously deep blue-line. Jones could be the piece that spurs that weakness. Montour recorded a dazzling 73 points in 80 games with the 2022-23 Panthers, in a role that allowed him to drive the puck down the ice with little worry. Long-distance control and playmaking are Jones’ speciality, and what supported him to a career-high 57 points next to Zach Werenski on the 2017-18 Blue Jackets.
Chicago will find just as sweet of a match with their new additions. Knight was a premier youth hockey prospect and earned a first-round selection in the 2019 NHL Draft after two strong years with the U.S. National Team’s Development Program. He broke into the NHL two years later and quickly flashed as someone who could eventually challenge Sergei Bobrovsky’s starting role. Knight recorded a .909 save percentage and 23-9-3 record across his first 36 NHL games, and first two pro seasons.
But his play took a hard hit in the 2022-23 campaign, and Knight made the decision to enter the NHL Player’s Assistance Program in February of that year. The decision ended his season early, and the Panthers opted to deploy Knight as their AHL starter in the ensuing 2023-24 campaign. He took to the role phenomenally, recording a 25-14-5 record and .905 Sv% in 45 games with the Charlotte Checkers. That was enough to earn Knight a jump back to the NHL backup role this year, where he’s continued to perform well – with a .907 Sv% and 12-8-1 record on the year.
Knight has had an up-and-down journey through the NHL – but he’s never played poorly for more than a short stretch. In fact, he hasn’t at any point in his hockey career recorded a save percentage below .900 across a full season. In his pro career, Knight has a .906 in 80 NHL games and a .905 in 58 AHL games.
Those numbers are beyond serviceable, and the former 13th-overall draft pick will now get a chance to show he can sustain them in a starter’s role. The Blackhawks’ crease is wide open with veteran Petr Mrazek struggling to stay above water this season. Mrazek has posted a .890 Sv% and 10-19-2 record – his worst numbers since he played 18 games with the Maple Leafs in the 2021-22 season. Mrazek’s slow play has landed him in the midst of trade rumors.
Those rumors won’t be helped along by the acquisition of a new top goaltender, though the Blackhawks could afford to ease Knight into what is sure to be a bombarded role. Mrazek recorded the most losses (31) and sixth-most shots against (1,724) last season. Since Mrazek joined the Blackhawks in 2022, only one goalie with more than 100 games played has faced more shots against-per-60 – Anaheim’s John Gibson, who has faced two more shots-per-60 than Mrazek.
That’s the setup of an incredibly difficult role – one that will be hard to turn over to the technically unproven Knight. The Blackhawks find themselves dead-last in the Central Division with March rolling around. With the season already lost, and surely more deadline moves awaiting them, the Hawks could dedicate the remainder of the year towards feeling out a new look to their roster of the future. If all goes well, former top pick Knight will lead the crop in net.
Meanwhile, Florida will have to find a new man to back up Bobrovsky’s heavy utilization. Longtime NHL backup Chris Driedger has served as the most-used netminder for the AHL’s Checkers, though he’s split time with career minor leaguer Ken Appleby. Appleby has posted the better stat line of the two – with an 11-7-1 record and .908 SV% to Driedger’s 10-6-4 record and .878 SV%. They’ve played 19 and 20 games respectively. But both veterans have been outdone by second-year pro Cooper Black, who has a dazzling .921 SV% and 7-2-1 record in 10 appearances this year. The strong AHL performances are a bit of a surprise, given Black started the year with a 4-3-0 record and .886 SV% in seven ECHL games. Nonetheless, he could be the sneaky pick to earn an NHL look should Florida want to find ways to lean into their young options, rather than turning towards their pair of perennial backups.

Could be a great move by Panthers, had success getting d to play better
So the Hawks will go with Mrazek, And Knight, Soderblom won’t be back, And Brossoit’s knee injury is really serious.
The Hawks won’t go with Mrazek, Knight and Broissoit. Knight has been in the substance abuse program like twice I think you can’t count on him for anything. Think you can expect another trade coming somewhere with either Soderblom or Knight in it. Hawks can’t retain any more salary so Mrazek and Broissoit are here to stay. At least until next year.
LOL, He is not a drugie
Well whatever he is being a Goalie which is probably the highest stress position in Professional sports probably doesn’t bode well for his longevity. Don’t get me wrong, I hope I’M wrong. He was a very good player with a high ceiling at one time. It’s certainly worth the gamble. Hawks are going to have to deal a Goalie and if it’s Mrazek or Broissoit they’re going to have to find a third team to retain salary and it’s going to cost them a draft pick. It’s not like they don’t have enough of them to go around.
Knight was dealing with an obsessive compulsive disorder.
It’s Knight and Soda moving forward. Mrazek and Broissoit are getting bought out if they can’t be traded lol.
The Hawks site says they got a 2026 1st round pick not a 2027 pick. Don’t know who is right but there it is.
NHL.com also lists the hawks as taking a 2026 1st
Some confusion in the mix of reports. Florida sends their 2026 pick in this deal, but with the condition that it could be bumped back to their 2027 first should they find another deal for the 2026 pick. Bit of a unique condition, will be interesting to see if it foreshadows any more FLA moves this Deadline. Would be tight w/ cap space. Either way, the article’s been updated to hopefully help that confusion – thanks y’all!
It’s conditioned. I believe florida owes calgary a ’25(top 10 protected) falls to ’26. They r making the safe assumption that Florida’s ’25 1st won’t be top 10 protected. Which is fair to assume. But if by some miracle they collapse and this years pick is within the top ten calgary gets Florida’s ’26 1st. Which would means this trade with chicago best thwy can get is ’26 1st worst is a ’27 if the ’26 ends up going to calgary.
I’m confused. Florida gave up a 1st to acquire a guy with a 9.5mil cap hit who is not worth 9.5?
Well, minus the 25% the Hawks are retaining.
Jones at 7 on a good team is worth a pick that isn’t for years. This is Florida banking on that pick being around 30 which to me makes Knight the real get for Chicago. Who are banking on Florida not being good making that pick in the top half. It’s a good trade for both teams but think it’s huge for Chicago now and 5 years from now too
25% for 4 years.
Knight has posted above-average stats in Florida’s backup role since his first NHL game. One season of strong play as an AHL starter mixed in there. His Player Assistance visit was confirmed as due to battles with OCD, not what you accuse. Great article from The Hockey News breaks that down.
Why post facts when you can just slander people.
What do you think the Hawks will do about their new 4 Goalie problem sir? Thanks for the info.
That was for Gabriel by the way. Proves you shouldn’t believe everything you read on the internet.
Info is the name of the game! Figuring out positional log-jams, less so… I’d be in the camp that thinks this move means Mrazek is out the door soon. Hopefully Brossoit doesn’t miss a step when he’s back, and can lead the mix of Commesso and Knight until they can stand on their own. From there, any positives with Gajan or others is icing on the cake… at least, gotta think that’s the ideal. Gonna be interesting to see if Davidson gets all he hopes for with this one.
Exactly! This is 2025 America!
Great Haul for Chicago, Jones wanted out, made it public and still got a 1st and a young goalie with decent potential. I know it would have been hard to resign Bennett in the first place, but this kinda feels like a nail in that coffin no?
Who’s the back up in Florida now? Driedger?
I was just writing the same question lol Must be Driedger
Samoskevich for Lyon!
Wow. Didn’t think they’d would actually be able to move that contract. And they got a 1st and a young goalie?
Good job by Davidson to shed that awful contract. But they’re still an awful team right now.
Seth Jones going to Florida is a bit of a surprise as I thought for sure Dallas would have been the one to acquire him.
This move by Florida puts into question the future of Aaron Ekblad after this season who is a UFA. Florida won’t have the cap space to keep both Ekblad & Jones after this season even with Jones retention but they will also need to figure how this deal will impact Sam Bennett who’s another primary UFA for them as well after the season. Someone is getting dropped for certain after the season.
Not necessarily, losing knights contract and the cap increase they can squeeze Ekblad and Bennett in depending on how much they want.
Highly doubtful. They will have $20.5M in cap space total (& that includes the cap increase & Knight’s contract off the books). Bennett is projected to get anywhere from $8M to $8.5M AAV alone (his current contract is $4.4M AAV). Ekblad is projected to be around $7.5M (which is his current AAV) but could potentially get over $8M AAV. Simply put it, it’s pretty likely they will be losing one of them as signing both of them would strap them with little cap space to do anything else.
Both will sign for less if they want to stay in FL. Lundell will probably move up to 2C next year anyhow. Bennett is not worth $8, maybe some team gets desperate and overpays.
Bennett may not be worth $8M but the scales are changing with the cap increase. He’s won his championship already & history typically says the player will go for the money after a championship win. In addition, this may be his last chance to cash in big in his career. Bennett taking less money is not likely.
It’s also a cap dump for Florida as Knight was… Provably overpaid, if we’re being real.
I truly can’t believe the Panthers just gave up a very near future #1 goalie for Seth Jones. The Bob better not get injured!
Ehhhhh… Calling Knight a #1 goalie is a stretch. He’s had multiple chances to win the starter job from Bobrovsky, who’s not amazing himself, and he hasn’t been up to the job. He tops out as a tandem goalie for me.
Chicago clearly thinks he is.
…and a first!
This deal has 3 ways to work out for CHI.
1) Knight becomes their guy.
2) They hit on the first round pick.
3) They got rid of Jones.
#3 is already in the bank and 1 and 2 could still pan out. Gotta like their end of this.
well said
It’s not a bad deal for the Hawks. he shed around 2 million of his salary and saved 7 like I said would be a solid solution. The 1st round pick is basically a high second round pick in all likelihood. Unless Florida’s fortunes nose dive significantly. Knight has been a problem for them so they dump it on Chicago. I’m a bit surprised they were able to pull it off mid season, But now Davidson has a ton of dough to go after a Winger to pair with Bedard. Pick the right coach and winger FA and things are looking better. I give it an A minus.
Knight hasn’t been a problem for them. He has played pretty well in his backup role and everybody will be rooting hard for him to succeed.
He’s a really good kid, he’s been through some mental health challenges but is very well liked by everybody in the organization. He needs to go somewhere where he can play more and with the cap the way it is it wasn’t going to be Florida.
it’s a great deal for the Hawks
Both teams taking risk. worth it. florida also showed Bennett is priority signing not Ekblad. Driedger was good backup. Some many assume if asks for help has to be booze or drugs. Respect Knight for dealing with issues not climbing in a bottle.
This trade is terrible for the Panthers. Knight and a first round pick for a 4th round pick and a mediocre 7 goal scorer. Blackhawks should be beyond happy, Florida fans should be punching air.
It would be hard to gauge the proficiency of a defenseman solely by his goal output any given season, and it’s doubtful Florida finds a better defenseman at a more reasonable contract on the open market this summer than what they’ll pay Jones.
If Florida thinks they’re getting a number 1 shut down Defenseman and PP point person rest assured they’re not. His shot stinks, Vlasic is the best shut down D-Man on the team and Jones is often out of position and getting beat. The only reason his Plus-Minus numbers are respectable is because he’s on the ice 25 minutes a game and plays on the PP which skews his numbers. He’s definitely not a goal scorer.
everyone knows Jones is not a shut-down D and PP has no effect on +/-
I’ll be shocked if down the road the results of this trade show Kyle from Chicago pulled on over on Billy Zito. Panthers fans should relax.
An I missing something? This seems like a bad deal for Florida
Absolute robbery.
Could not have imagined Jones’ value being a potential 1G and a first. Also tells me Ekblad won’t be with the team next season. They’ve basically subbed out Ekblad for Jones going forward and paid to do so.
I love how everyone suddenly crowned Knight as the GOAT goalie lol…. the man has severe mental issues that kept him out for almost all of the last TWO seasons…. he missed TWO runs to the cup finals because of his personal issues… I hope he’s got them all worked out.. but wow… you all seem to think he’s Dominik Hasek in this thread lol… The Panthers are in the middle of a possible dynasty run.. and just got better. They have multiple future HOFers IN THEIR PRIME on their roster right now…. Worry about 5 years from now in 5 years… they could etch the cup 3-4 more times before then.
Cup runs through state of Florida again.
Can’t wait for the FLA-Tampa Match-up!!!!
I still find it interesting how Seth and Caleb Jones made it to the NHL when their dad Popeye Jones was in the NBA. It’s cool how they forged their own path. It’s just like Dan Petry a former MLB pitcher for the Detroit Tigers his son Jeff is in the NHL. Makes you wonder how many others made it in different sports then their dads.
