Vancouver Canucks Fielding Offers On Elias Pettersson, J.T. Miller

January 4, 2025 at 8:30 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 41 Comments

There was one major talking point in tonight’s rendition of ’Saturday Headlines’ with Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. Friedman reports the Vancouver Canucks are fielding offers on forwards Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller with all options currently on the table.

Friedman asserts the Canucks are “definitely” looking at the market for both forwards but it appears to be a stronger version of due diligence rather than active trade talks up to this point. There’s a possibility neither are traded, one is, or both are traded and Friedman wasn’t willing to commit to any of the options. Still, the trade chatter has gotten to the point of Vancouver telling interested parties they’ll need an NHL-caliber center as a part of the return package for either player.

Due to the complexity of any hypothetical trade involving Pettersson or Miller, there haven’t been many legitimate connections to any teams. Friedman pointed out that neither player had requested a trade from the Canucks although Miller would likely prefer to return to the United States.

There appears to be something brewing in Vancouver though. In a recent interview with Iain MacIntyre of Sportsnet, the general manager of the Canucks, Patrik Allvin spoke candidly about Pettersson saying, “Petey has shown up to this point that he is an extremely talented, quality player that could and should be a No. 1 centre. I believe in him. I believe that he’s capable. (But) he needs to mature and understand that there are certain expectations and it does not get easier. And you need to face the music when things don’t go well. Is it (a trade) possible? I guess I would say anything is possible.”

It doesn’t take much scrutiny to notice the apparent rift between them. This year alone, Pettersson scored two goals and 15 points in the 10 games Miller missed from mid-November to mid-December. Throughout 23 games playing with Miller this season, Pettersson has eight goals and 13 points in 23 contests. Miller has been a consistent performer regardless of Pettersson’s availability but he may hold less value in Vancouver given he’s five years Petterson’s elder.

Miller has more control over a potential trade given the no-movement clause in his contract and Pettersson’s not starting until next year. Still, Pettersson’s contract may be more difficult to move given his $11.6MM salary compared to Miller’s $8MM price tag.

It will be an interesting saga to see play out regardless. This is an issue that the Canucks could continue an attempt to solve internally. However, being no stranger to moves of magnitude, GM Allvin may take it upon himself to create a resolution via trade.

Zibanijad & Schneider for Pettersson. Vancouver wins the deal because they land the best player…. Schneider.

I would not want Pettersson at that cap hit and not mentally tough. Good for fantasy league hockey only.

This is what you say when you want to wake up your player, not trade him.

“Hey, rival GM, I have a pouting whiner with an $11.6 AAV, any interest?”

Only Mika but Mika is the same contract as Miller. CK contract is up in 2 and you can trade CK next year for legit assets if you want

Buffalo, Anaheim & Minny have the pieces to get either trade done. Winnipeg, Columbus & Utah for Pettersson… don’t be surprised if Boeser gets moved first tho. If he’s heading to UFA they can’t afford to let him go for free…

Thinking Dallas could get in on Miller with Seguin on LTIR and then buy out Seguin this summer. Van would want Wyatt Johnston though…….Would Van be satisfied with Bourque or Hryckowian, Dumba and a 1st???

I do like Dallas as a fit – however more for Boeser alone. He’s also a possible UFA signing with the contracts they have expiring this summer…

Not sure who Miller has blocked on his list, but I’m betting the Rangers aren’t one of them. Drury may need to pull the trigger on a deal and move something like a Kreider, Chytil and Perrault for Miller.

Kreider scores goals, and currently not even doing that. Bad contract and second line to boot. Chytil odd a third line center and nothing more, so no loss there. Perrault, as much as I wouldn’t want to move him, would be the main piece from the Rangers side to make this happen. Miller is a top line talent that can play RW if necessary, allowing Laffy to go back to his normal position.

Pettersson sounds to have immaturity issues & for his $11.6M AAV that may keep a lot of teams off him. Pettersson seems to need to be on a team with a strong veteran leadership group as clearly being a No. 1 Center is something he’s not ready for at this stage in his career. Asking for another No. 1 Center in exchange is going to be highly unlikely under the circumstances. Vancouver is more then likely stuck with Pettersson unless they change their position.

Miller is more likely to be traded than Pettersson at this point especially with a lesser cap hit at $8M AAV. Miller is a consistent player overall. You know what you’re getting.

Boeser though is really the top target more teams will have interest in especially being on an expiring contract (rather lower end deal) for $6.5M AAV for a top caliber player.

So Pettersson didn’t have these maturity issues when they signed him for 8 yrs or he had them then and they figured over 8 years and $92M they would go away?

The crazy thing is that to get him to sign that extension, the Canucks had to use the thumbscrews and threaten to trade him to Carolina. Pettersson wasn’t even sold on staying in Vancouver. This all looks like a botch by Allvin

If Marner approves a move and is far apart on an extension in Toronto/gets an extension with Vancouver:

    Marner/Kampf/B Prospect/4th for Pettersson/Garland/Raty/1st (add a 2nd if Vancouver extends)

Marner would be leading Vancouver in scoring by 14 points. He greatly improves their ability to win this year and offers the franchise a mulligan at signing a marquee player long-term. Toronto does it for versatility… getting their badly needed 2C, while getting back a RW who can play middle six at worst and has a game I think Berube would like a lot. Raty and the pick(s) are the futures to make up for the talent/results difference between the NHL players.

Vancouver should try to pry Trocheck and grab Miller who has struggled this year to balance the cap more, I doubt Trocheck is on the table so more likely Zabanajad, Krieder i believe has some trade protection

    Vancouver: Zabanajad and Miller
New York: JT Miller and another roster player

Rangers aren’t moving Miller. He’s the second puck moving defenseman after Fox and they won’t budge from that. The top four are solid and young.

Petey signed that 11M+ contract he played with a pinch of energy, then the All Star break came and he disappeared seemed lethargic lacked the incentive to push himself.
I’m all for moving him but Nucks would have to eat salary and doubt that’d be acceptable to the current teams financials.
Miller plays hard more consistent a bit tougher. Better ‘team’ focused overall, yet if he actually desires to be US located and team could get similar return they might acquiesce his preference.
Either way team would take a hit but if it improves the chemistry, make it happen

That’s a great point, Vancouver put the cart before the horse, Management clearly buckled to media, And fanbase pressure in the Pettersson extension, And now it’s blowing up in there face, As for Miller, He’s a beast on the ice, I love to watch him play,Unfortunately, Miller is a beast in the locker room as well.
