Throughout the middle of the season, the NHL is unveiling Quarter-Century Teams for all 32 franchises, plus the now-defunct Coyotes. Each club is represented by a first and second team of six players – three forwards, two defensemen and one goalie – who played for the franchise after Jan. 1, 2000. The first and second teams were selected by broadcasters and national, local, and NHL.com writers who covered the respective teams and some former players. The six players voted to each First Team will be on the ballot for the NHL All-Quarter-Century Team and will be chosen via a fan vote starting in February.
Back in December, PHR’s Josh Erickson took a crack at predicting how each franchise’s teams would shake out. You can cross-check his projections against the actual results.

The link to cross check the prediction leads to a x post about some kid.
And how does Roenick get voted to the Arizona team with his 2.5 seasons with the yotes in the timeframe?
Josh Erickson
That link is fixed. And you’re not alone in your puzzlement.
Don's Cherry
Hossa imminently superior to Sharp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
M34
‘Imminently’ doesn’t fit there, I think you meant Immensely. But I get your point. Must mean he’s going in with Ottawa?
M34
Ah. Never mind. He’s on team 2.
In that case I agree completely
retsubllab
0 for 2, whiz kids. The word is ’eminently’ -meaning ‘to a notable degree’
M34
That could fit too
PyramidHeadcrab
No offense to Nick Foligno and Boone Jenner, but the fact that either of these guys made the list really underscores just how badly CBJ has been hurting for some true star talent up front. Gaudreau was on the precipice of getting there, but some drunk-driver POS had to stop that…
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Fedor Tyutin.
Him over Jaroslav Spacek must have been a tough call.
Joking aside, this is some serious Jack Johnson erasure.
usaKesler
More meaningless NHL content compiled, And published by an overzealous intern.
JP8
Wow… That Chicago lineup, first team and parts of the second played together for years!
dano62
Youch! Forsling makes Panthers first team, one of many gifts of Benning that haunt the Canucks still (guenther will too)…
kingsfan1968
Al Macinnis 2nd Team? Wow!
wreckage
Al only played 3.5 season this century.
wreckage
Knew Pronger would make at least 1 list.
wreckage
Make it 2 now. Although making the Flyers seems like a joke. with his 145 game career in Phili.
siddfinch1079
Three total with ANA, STL & PHI. Not sure if his one year with EDM is better than the rest of their Dmen though to make it 4 for 4…
frozenaquatic
Yeah, Pronger on Philly is so sus — only had one good year. Should have been Gostisbehere imho, who had four good impactful seasons (and two Covid seasons), but would have accepted Mark Streit, Kim Johnsson, Joni Pitkanen, or Matt Carle, who all had at least 3 good seasons with the Flyers.
kscheer
Huberdeu over Reinhart is a joke.
wreckage
10 years over 4 may have something to that evaluation.
iron
Huber over Bure is also a joke. Huber is serviceable, but Bure meant more to the team revitalizing the Panthers in his short time there.
wreckage
Once again, this is strictly based on this millennium. From Jan 1 2000. Bure has played about 150 games in Florida in that time. Huberdeau played almost 700. Guess who left a bigger impact.
iron
If you watched many of those 700 games you would see why he was just about average. NO ONE went to a Panthers game to see Huberdeau. Bure brought back the fans and excitement. I’ll take his 150 games over Huberdeau’s entire career all day.
wreckage
Well it was a poll conducted by the NHL asking former players and team executives and writers and it was based on their input. Clearly the people paid to do hockey stuff disagree with your amateur eye and assessment. The guy who averaged just below a ppg across 10 seasons had a stronger case then the guy with just over a PPG across 2.5 seasons when voting on the teams most influential players of this millennium.
iron
Well these polls are made for inspiring comments…
Also, have you played against NHL players…No?…I have.
wreckage
Have I played against NHL players? In practice and scrimmage ya, I played vs/with a guy who went 1st round 5th overall, while in high school. Taught me quick that I wasn’t close to good enough to pursue a career playing. Made some acquaintances who work around the game since too. Enough to know guys respect guys with longevity over a short burst in certain situations like this poll. Bure was an amazing player, especially over the entirety of his career. But Huberdeau had a better and more impactful career since Jan 1, 2000 to this date, than Pavel did for the Panthers. Pavel may have been more dazzling and had more superstar sizzle than Huberdeau in the time frame, but Huberdeau had a longer lasting effect in the set time frame than Bure. A better career is another story, Bure owns that, but a more impactful time in Florida since Jan 1, 2000 is another story.
iron
Looks like we agree to disagree. I am glad that we were able to express our opinions. Good to hear that you actually played with an NHL’er. I actually sub’ed a couple of times at Panthers practices and regularly faced NHL players in practice and ex-NHL/WHA players in leagues. Was told by a 50 goal scorer that I would have fit right in the WHA. Wishing you all the best!
jminn
Come on Josh!! There is no way Fowler beats both Pronger and Beauchemin for the first team. Both are much, much, much better than he.
wreckage
This is the NHL’s evaluation not his.
Josh Erickson
@jminn – this page reflects the final teams as voted on by local media and former players. Looks like they disagree, at least in terms of total impact/longevity.
jminn
Sorry about that Josh. I should have known. I’d still take Prongs or Beauch every day over Fowler.
DarkSide830
Brandon Montour lol
M34
Perry over Kariya seems wrong to me.
Seattle being a part of this list also seems wrong.
wreckage
Kariya only played 3.5 seasons this millennium, Perry played 14 seasons this millennium there. That’s why Perry takes top spot over Kariya.
M34
I suppose. I guess I’m still a bit old school in that sense. I’ll brace myself now to not see forsberg, modano, alfredsson, and all the other guys i grew up watching on the 1st team lists
PyramidHeadcrab
Paul Kariya remains my favourite NHL player of all time. He was so, so fun to watch. They just don’t make ’em like they used to… Probably because Scott Stevens went and showed the league you can basically attempt to kill a guy and get away with it.
Bradley B
I’m surprised Suter is 2nd team for Minnesota.
PyramidHeadcrab
Suter and Parise were never bad players, they were quite good in fact. They were just overpaid.
Bradley B
I loved them both in those early years. It’s a little nuts that they were top 5 contracts when they were signed, though.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I think they actually got the Pens right.
bucsfan
Yeah I’m happy about Gonchar being first team, although I love Orpik as well. Dumo being the other D-man on the 2nd team was nice.
While I know the way this was designed, I still feel something wrong about Mario being listed on the 2nd team of anything related to the Pens.
M34
I forgot about Gonchar. Especially as a penguin
aberdeen101
LOL with the Malkin over Lemieux comment for Pittsburgh. Most people with a brain know who should be first team between the two.
wreckage
Once again. It’s since the calendar flipped to 2000. Lemuiex was definitely a better player over all. But which one has had a bigger impact since Jan 1, 2000?
This is why the rest of the world makes fun of the American education system. How many time has it been pointed out that this is a poll from the NHL to players and broadcasters from local markets, people much more wise to to the situation than any of us, who select these teams. Not writers on this site, not fans, not some random writers elsewhere. Former players and beat writers for NHL.
SMFH at some of the maroons that come into this article.
doghockey
It’s not an all-time Pittsburgh team. Simple concept spelled out at the top of the page. The brain people read it.
foleyd7
Agree. I don’t care if Lemieux only played 1 game in this century. The fact that he isn’t 1st team renders this whole exercise irrelevant. Lemieux would be 1st team of ALL TIME.
Also, in no universe is any winger in Anahiem better than the combined tandem of Selanne and Kariya. Those 2 were so dynamic together that no individual forward from Anahiem touches their impact together.
wreckage
Pronger, Cechmanek, and Boucher is a joke right?
Germond
Even Boosh was genuinely surprised on yesterday’s telecast.
frozenaquatic
I can see them not wanting the Carter Hart blowback (his numbers were pretty bad anyway) but no way Boucher should be over Bryzgalov or Steve Mason.
PyramidHeadcrab
Or Bobrovsky??
frozenaquatic
Bob had one good year, his rookie year, with Philly. Boucher had two solid years. Bryzgalov had two good years with the Flyers. Mason had 3 really good years and 1 solid year. Justice for Steve Mason.
fightcitymayor
Tim Thomas over Tuukka Rask is an eternal debate. TT has the Cup, Rask has the better long-term consistency.
frozenaquatic
Timmy had two Vezinas as well. Tukka never won one.
fightcitymayor
Rask won the Vezina in 2014 (and was runner-up in 2020).
frozenaquatic
I stand corrected. Tukka was very very good.
wreckage
Hasek? Hasek? He pleyed in Buffalo for 1.5 seasons under the terms expressed.
PyramidHeadcrab
And was one of the best goaltenders the league has ever seen.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I thought, “well, maybe they just had nothing but scrubs outside of Ryan Miller” but Marty Biron had a solid run there.
And Hasek was the best EVER. In the 90’s.
Nha Trang
Yeah, anyone sane would have to put Biron’s seven seasons of very solid play for the Sabres over Hasek’s last single Vezina.
PyramidHeadcrab
That Buffalo lineup really showcases why they’re such bottom feeders most years…. Lots of good players, but not any real stars outside of the net. 25 years and the best you can show for it is Jason Pominville? Ehhhhhh…
Then they finally get a star in Eichel, and they trade him away because they didn’t want to approve a procedure to fix his back. Must be so frustrating for those fans.
DarkSide830
Rask > Thomas
M34
Lucic over pasta?!?!
No way
jdgoat
How do they leave Kari Lehtonen off Dallas while putting Belfour on. I think you could argue he could even be above Turco.
frozenaquatic
I agree! Even Otter is more important than either Belfour (the cup was in the 90s! Followed by two very mediocre seasons) or Turco already if we’re being honest.
M34
Kinda wierd seeing pavelskis name on a 25 year dallas list.
Also, Williams’ laundry list of clutch moments puts him on the first team for the canes in my opinion.
jdgoat
I was kind of surprised to see Oshie on Washingtons list, it seems like he’s only been there for a short period of time. Can’t believe he’s spent the majority of his career there and not in St Louis.
frozenaquatic
Only quibble with the Habs would be Petry (steady over 7+ seasons) over Souray (one big year), but wow have the Canadiens been pretty bad for 25 years.
Gbear
These lists are so arbitrary. But whatever.
WizofI
These lists are based on stats for the last 25 years. An example is Chicago. In no way is Sharp the better player over Hossa in their times with Chicago. Sharp has better stats since he played more games so he is on the 1st team, Hoss on the second.
M34
Cant really argue with the avalanche list. I suppose you could make a case for J.S. Giguere, but Varly on team 2 is fine as well
Macbeth
Why is Mario on the second team?
Rollie's Mustache
It does look weird, but the list is limited to the 2000’s. So Mario’s 170 GP and 229 PTS in that timeframe pale in comparison to the contributions of someone on the first team like Guentzel (503 GP, 466 PTS).
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I think my pro Mario credentials are fairly self evident…
I can make a solid case for Jordan Staal over Mario based on years that start with a 2.
Rollie's Mustache
I know the Moore incident overshadowed a lot of what Bertuzzi did in Vancouver, but I think you could make the argument that he deserves a spot on that second team. His line with Naslund and Morrison was truly dominant – like, legitimately the best line in hockey for a time. Bertuzzi finished with more points as a Canuck than Kesler too, although Kesler had more playoff success.
Maybe I’m biased since I lived in Vancouver during his tenure, but Bert was a real fan favorite there and arguably the best power forward in the game in the early 00’s.
M34
But this is a list of players to represent the team. Bertuzzis execution of one of the dirtiest incidents in the history of the sport is not the type of thing you want representing your franchise.
DevilShark
The Nico Hischier snub is criminal. More influential than 4 of those forwards over the past 25 years.
doghockey
Criminal? Really? This is nothing but an exercise in creating some fantasy lineups. Lighten up a bit. Or a lot.
DevilShark
Or you could have your own opinion and p.o.
doghockey
No thanks. More fun to mock anyone who thinks that it is criminal to be missing a guy on what amounts to a fantasy hockey lineup.
frozenaquatic
I don’t have a dog in this fight but I’m pretty sure DevilShark was using a metaphor.
doghockey
Maybe. If so, a bad one. Criminal? Worthy of mocking. Also noted that he didn’t claim metaphor status so quite possibly it was standard issue hyperbole, normal stuff by the emotional types who rant around these parts.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I was thinking Joe Nieuwendyk, winning them a Cup and all, but either way…Zajac?
Nha Trang
Yzerman in the 2000s OVER Fedorov and Shanahan?? AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Josh Erickson
Yeah, I feel like these are getting progressively more unhinged
Nha Trang
Mmhmm. This is reminding me suspiciously of all those NHL Best! Of! All! Time! compilations that turn out to REALLY be “best that the 20-something author’s seen with his own eyes,” or “best that the YouTuber can find recent broadcasts to gank clips from.”
Here, it’s just “Pick the more famous name, even if he only played a handful of games after Y2K.”
PyramidHeadcrab
Wow, that Islanders list is *brutal*. There have been teams during the last 25 years where none of these players would even make the top line. Same problem as Buffalo – years of mediocrity and no real star power to show for it.
wreckage
How does an Islanders list not include Tavares? Even if hated, he has to be a top 6 forward there in the 2000s.
Perreault11
If you looked at the list with your eyes open you would see Tavares on the first team.
junkmale
lol and wreckage was never heard from again.
Also: I’m loving reading some of the comments from fans revisiting the ghosts of fandom past with these lists.
DarkSide830
Wow, that Rangers 1st team is great, I bet they won many cups!
PyramidHeadcrab
Ben Bishop over Nikolai Khabibulin? What crack were they smoking for that one?
FeeltheThunder
Before Vasilevskiy, Bishop was the best goalie in Lightning history. He now is second all time in games played (227), starts (223), wins (131) and shutouts (17), but his 2.28 GAA and .921 save percentage are first in Tampa Bay history among goalies to play at least 50 games. Bishop guided the Lightning to the Stanley Cup Final in 2015, winning 13 games with three shutouts, a 2.18 GAA and .921 save percentage in 25 games. Khabibulin despite winning the Cup in ‘04 (unlike Bishop in ‘15) Khabibulin just doesn’t have better numbers overall in his career, hence why Bishop got picked instead. Bishop also mentored Vasilevskiy as well.
Nha Trang
By what possible metric do you imagine that Khabibulin was better? This isn’t a list of “Who played on the most Cup-winning teams.”
FeeltheThunder
Overall, both Tampa’s 1st & 2nd teams are pretty damn solid.
M34
Having to pick 2 out of vasy, bishop, and khabibulin is the definition of first world problems.
FeeltheThunder
True
66TheNumberOfTheBest
If Mike Fisher is on your first team…couldn’t make most club’s ninth team.
Also, didn’t Ryan Suter play there…for, like, a decade? Ekholm and Timonen are/were nice players and all, but…
Gbear
The Preds forward list is a testament at how badly they’ve drafted at that position. Only Legwand was drafted by them out of those 6 players listed. And while they’re all good players in their own right, none of them are elite level.
M34
Edmontons defensive players on this list make me laugh.
But LA on the other hand. That’s a good solid list.
M34
Actually, as I peruse this again, it’s kinda strange that the yotes only had 5 post season appearances in the last quarter century. Their lists are pretty decent
jdgoat
