Rangers winger Matt Rempe got an opportunity to return to New York following the trade of Kaapo Kakko earlier in the week. He made a big impression in his first game back but not the one he was necessarily looking to make. The NHL announced today that he has been offered an in-person hearing for a hit made on Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen on Friday; a clip of the hit via B/R Open Ice can be found here.
The hit came in the third period last night, one that saw him receive a five-minute major for elbowing along with a game misconduct. Notably, the league’s release indicates that both elbowing and boarding are among the grounds being considered for supplemental discipline.
By offering an in-person hearing, the NHL now has the ability to suspend Rempe for more than five games which is the maximum had it been a telephone hearing. That said, them offering it doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll receive six or more games either. The Department of Player Safety relayed later in the day (Twitter link) that the hearing will be held on Sunday.
Rempe has played in 22 career regular season games and this was the fourth ejection of his young career. He has been suspended once before, that coming back in March when he received a four-game ban for elbowing. He will fall under repeat offender status when it comes to determining both the length of suspension and the calculation of forfeited wages where the denominator will be 82 (representing games) instead of the number of days in a particular season.

Seriously, does Matt Rempe know how to play hockey at all?…I mean all this kid does is just go out to apparently try to hurt people. This kid is about as useless as Ryan Reeves. If he wants to be an enforcer type player then he needs to take lessons from Pat Maroon’s playbook.

Are you kidding me? Did you even watch the game? He drew three penalties before this. He was having one of the best games of his career. And the only reason he got called for elbowing instead of boarding is because he’s 8 inches taller than the guy he hit.
FeeltheThunder
Dude, it’s not just about one game & no I didn’t watch it either. You’re missing the point quite obviously. Rempe has a significant track record already in his career of doing these dirty hits particularly at other players heads. Stop being a Rangers fanboy & realize all this kid is, is just a thug on skates & nothing else.
The league needs to make a strong example out of Rempe because this kid is going to end up putting other players careers in considerable jeopardy.

I’m not saying there isn’t a place for him in this league, but the NHL has evolved in to a more speed, and skilled league. They’ve made the game more competitive by legislating the goonery out that made the game a laughing stock. He would have fit right in back fifteen years ago when fighting was still a big part of the game. This guy needs to learn the offensive skill of the game. Right now he reminds me of a bigger Nick Fotiu.

There was a lot to not like about the hit- elbow up and out, clearly coming from behind, arguably leaves his feet. I feel for Rempe because none of this is his fault. All blame lies on the shoulders of the New York Rangers. The only reason he’s in the NHL is because of his size. Other than that he has no business playing in the NHL. Rangers are doing him no favours by playing him without developing any skills in the AHL first. Kid is just trying to do all he can to stick in the NHL by playing agressive.

He can try to fight it but 3 different times he boarded guys in that game. All three times he hit in the numbers. He was just running guys all game until he got kicked out.
itsmeheyhii
They wont do it, but it should be 10 games. Send a message.
Bucky76
I will say 7 games but should be more i hooe he is back by January 7th as they play Dallas again.

When ‘Razor’ gets hot on a call, you know it’s bad. Elbowing, charging, and a blatant head-shot. I’m with @itsmeheyhii here, and wouldn’t shed a tear if if was more than 10.

Stupid hit. Kid should learn that his role is to enforce when needed and park himself in front of the net and not take stupid offensive zone penalties. If he can do those two things, he can have a nice career.

4 ejections in 22 career games? Ban him 10, 20, 50 games, or even more. He’s a blight on the NHL and is going to end somebody’s career if he keeps up this behavior.

In defense of the kid, every team he faces throws their toughest at him, sometimes immediately to get it out of the way. He can’t help that. Last years Devil’s game for example, 4 players from each side got tossed, including Rempe, on the opening puck drop.

Rempe was going after the other teams’ tough guys, that’s why he was getting such a reputation at first. That Devils line brawl was because Macdermid called out Rempe publicly for not answering the bell after taking liberties with the Rangers. The problem here is Rempe not other teams going after Rempe.

a waste of a roster spot at the NHL level

Traded Trouba and Kakko but hanging on to Rempe? I would assume there are a bunch of teams dumb enough to think this guy is just what they need.
Trade now… peak of value.

Haha! You’re 100% right, and it’s funny!

He’s the only ‘tough’ player on the team at the moment since they moved Trouba. Team responds to him on the bench and on the ice.

I guess they should limit the height on guys in the league. He has to adjust his game because of his height. Has be been suspended in the AHL this year for dirty hits? Bettman the oompa loompa doesn’t like his style. Gonna make an example outa him for sure.
Doug Fistered
Chara was bigger than him but could actually skate, took him a few years to fill in his size, ended up having a HOF career, was never particularly dirty. Rempe should consider getting some tips from Big-Z

Rempe didn’t break any rules on the hit to Heiskanen.

He jumped and elbowed him in the head
