The Anaheim Ducks have acquired Robby Fabbri and a conditional 2025 fourth-round pick from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for goaltender Gage Alexander. The conditions of the pick have not yet been revealed. Alexander is currently attending Anaheim’s development camp, which is set to conclude on July 5th.
Fabbri moves to Anaheim after a small resurgence with Detroit this season. He posted 18 goals and 32 points across 68 games – the highest he’s scored since he managed 18 goals and 37 points as a rookie in 2015-16. The performance was a nice bounce back to form after Fabbri suffered the second torn ACL of his career in March of 2022. The injury held him out of a combined 80 games across the second half off 2021-22 and first-half of 2022-23, with Fabbri totaling 46 points in 84 games in the games he did play.
Now Fabbri, and his $4MM cap hit ext season, will move to an Anaheim Ducks team built around skill, while Detroit hopes to add yet another top goalie prospect in Alexander, a fifth-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. He’s since played in his first two professional seasons – recording five wins and a .887 save percentage in 16 AHL games, though most of his time has been spent in the ECHL backup role.
Detroit coupled this move by signing veteran winger Vladimir Tarasenko to a two-year, $9.5MM contract. That leaves them with roughly $20MM in remaining cap space, with restricted free agents Lucas Raymond and Joe Veleno still awaiting new contracts. The Wings will be left one forward spot short after re-signing their RFAs, though that role could be filled by top prospects like Nate Danielson, Marco Kasper, or Carter Mazur.

Salary cap clearing move to make room for Tarasenko…apparently Verbeek is doing his buddy Yzerman a favor

Salary cap clearing?…Dude, Red Wings didn’t necessarily need to clear cap space as they had $16m after the Tarasenko deal. Now, they have $20m in cap space after this trade with Robby Fabbri.
I think this move isn’t about Tarasenko but more about making sure they have enough room to sign their RFAs in Lucas Raymond, Joseph Veleno & Moritz Seider. I guess Yzerman is making sure his team has cap flexibility in assuring in these 3 potential signings.

Yeah because that’s how you get to be a GM in the NHL. You do a bunch of favors for your friends. Duh

It’s going to take at least $17M to sign Seider and Raymond to their extensions so if they don’t trade Fabbri and his $4M salary how do they sign both of these extensions…this is why the trade was done to clear salary cap space

Yet another stiff. He’s -89 for his career. We finally found someone worse than Fowler.

What is the plan with all these goaltenders?

Nothing in the rules says you can’t start 6 goalies.
Diabetic Rockstar
He’s just a body for the ECHL.
Ducks probably needed to move SOMEONE to stay under the 50 contract maximum. It’s a pure salary dump for Detroit, nothing more

Interesting moves so far. Plus minus Fabri, at about a minus 67 since joining the Wings, seems to be a liability on the defensive side of the game. Good luck to him, hope he is in a better fit. Meantime, need more hope for Wings that they can assemble at least 3 lines to be consistently competitive 2024-25 season.
Goal tending remains in play (I hope) as we seem to be siting with tenders that are a bit lower in save percentages than we had with Lyon and Reimer. A big bet on Husso this coming season may prove a disaster as we’ve seen just how important every point is starting with game one of the season.

So glad the Wings got rid of Fabri. Like David Perron, he takes dumb penalties. He’s also constantly hurt and a major defensive liability.
Glad Perron is gone as well.
So, essentially as it stands now, Perron and Fabri are gone and Tara’senko and Berggren are in those spots. I’ll take it.
However, I’m still not thrilled with our centers after Larkin. We need another offensive center to go with Larkin. A playmaker who can get wingers the puck. Compher and Copp are better suited for third line duties. And Veleno is nothing more than a fourth line guy.
