The National Hockey League has announced that Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill has won the 2023-24 Jim Gregory General Manager of the Year Award for the second consecutive season. The award is handed out annually and recognizes the efforts of the top general manager in the NHL. Nill joins New York Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello as the only general manager to win the award on more than one occasion.
In his 11th season as general manager of Dallas, Nill continued to supplement the Stars’ excellent drafting and development by signing Matt Duchene to a one-year $3MM deal that turned out to be a bargain as Duchene posted 25 goals and 40 assists in 80 games. Nill also signed Sam Steel to a bargain deal and traded for Chris Tanev at the trade deadline. Nill has had a massive role in Dallas building one of the deepest cores of young players in the NHL by drafting forwards Jason Robertson and Wyatt Johnston, while also selecting defenseman Miro Heiskanen and netminder Jake Oettinger.
The Stars lost in the Western Conference Finals to the Edmonton Oilers after they had posted 113 points in the regular season, one point shy of the New York Rangers who captured the President’s Trophy. It was the second consecutive season that the Stars lost in the Western Conference Final, and it was the third time they’ve advanced that far in the past five years.
Nill was also recently named as an assistant general manager of Canada’s Men’s Olympic Team for the 2026 Olympics as well as an associate general manager for Canada’s team in the 4 Nations Face-Off next February.
Red Wings
Zito should have won, Panthers made great signings during the off season, many ‘expects’ predicted they would miss the playoffs.

Not understanding. With the core the Panthers have and making the finals last year….many expected them to miss the playoffs? If anything, I read the opposite coming into the season.
MoneyBallJustWorks
a team that made the finals last year should have their gm win because they won the president’s trophy? I get their regular season jump from one year to the next was good, but many didn’t predict they’d miss the playoffs so much as struggle early with injuries.
if anything, Maurice should have gotten Adams consideration.
I’m most surprised that Chevy didn’t get consideration. Winnipeg going into last offseason was expected to lose its all-star goalie, top centre, and he was able to sign both long-term, get rid of PLD (in what looks like a steal early). yes they disappointed in the playoffs but I’d say he did as much as Nill.

Florida was widely predicted to win the Atlantic division coming into the season…

Nobody expected the Panthers to fall off or not make the playoffs. Little turnover from last year’s roster. I still think Chevy deserves some praise for steering the Jets out of a bad situation, however, Nill made really great moves this year.
doghockey
Two years ago they had the best regular season record. Last year they were in the finals. Yet you somehow believe that some experts predicted them to not make the playoffs this year? I am guessing that you can’t produce one article that predicted that, let alone many.

While Nill is deserving of the award (Zito would’ve been a good choice too), he needs to add some of the elements that the Panthers have if he wants to get the Stars over the hump, primarily a more phyiscal presence to go along with their skill.

Agree. Dallas plays soft. They try to be a tough group, but compared to Florida, they’re soft.

Yup. I think it’s pretty much agreed that bringing in a power forward (and maybe another Marchment type) is near the top of the list for the Stars.

Well that’s stupid. I didn’t realize not making the stanley cup final two years in a row is actually better GMing than doing so. Maybe if it looked like the stars were set up to be a dominant force next year I’d be a little less cynical, but I don’t see that either.
