In an update from Brad Elliott Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald, San Jose Sharks’ prospect Eric Pohlkamp has entered the transfer portal after only one season at Bemidji State University. The Sharks originally drafted Pohlkamp with the 132nd overall selection of the 2023 NHL Draft.
Despite being a late-round pick, Pohlkamp has turned into something of a diamond in the rough for the Sharks organization. Scoring 11 goals and 24 points in 32 games for Bemidji State this season, Pohlkamp also registered one goal and three points for Team USA en route to a gold medal in this year’s IIHF U20 World Junior Championships.
As for his potential landing spot, Max Miller of The Hockey News is reporting that Pohlkamp will be deciding between two different options. North Dakota University, who recently had their season ended by the University of Michigan this past weekend, and Denver University, who are about to play Boston University in the Frozen Four, are both vying for Pohlkamp’s services.
Other Pacific notes:
- In some positive news on the injury front for the Calgary Flames, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet reports that forward Andrew Mangiapane and defenseman Rasmus Andersson returned to practice for the team earlier this morning. Earlier this week, Andersson had originally missed practice due to taking a maintenance day, while Mangiapane has missed the team’s last two games due to an undisclosed injury.
- For the fourth time this season, defenseman Cale Fleury has been reassigned to the Coachella Valley Firebirds, as the Seattle Kraken announced the transaction earlier today. Unfortunately, Fleury has still not been able to register a game for the Kraken this season but has managed to score six goals and 32 points over 50 games for the Firebirds across the year.

Just a note: While it is DU, the school is the University of Denver, not Denver University

@Brennan — @jeancey is correct here. The two acceptable references are either DU or the University of Denver. One of the exceptions in the NCAA is Boston University, aka, BU.

They call them the Pios in Denver. Was listening to their local broadcast over the weekend. :)

@Gbear — I’ve heard that too. It’s not real popular with the masses. Kind of like the SN960 feed to Sirius/XM, which has been sounding badly overdriven, compared to the feed from the website. I was going to ask you to test the Sirius/XM feed from your gear to see how it sounds, then compare it to NHL.com. It’s been slightly better than a month ago, but still clipped on my end. Currently, they are the only ones to stop the geo-blocking garbage. SN650 and SN590 are still screwing the people over. Apparently, they forgot that others like to listen to games, regardless of their location on the old spinning globe.

@Mac – Starting this past Monday, I now just have the SiriusXM streaming package and frankly it sounds better with the bluetooth connection than the Sirius equipped radio I had in my previous vehicle, which some channels sounded compressed/under water. Using the Dolby Atmos feature on my android really gives the sound a spatial enhancement. (Yes, I’m an audiophile!). :D
Was suprised how many college games I was able to find online without having to download any apps. And yes, Pios sounds like a medical term.

@Gbear — I remember that, as we briefly discussed various antennas and HD Radio, among other things. That compression effect isn’t a good look for them. My TV app (TuneIn) compresses the audio (unnecessarily), so that sound is definitely degraded. I’m using an external sound card (7.1) on my daily driver, coupled with an Analog 7.1 Surround sound profile from my distro, and can hear things over 25-year-old PC speakers that make it sound like random noises in my house. Unfortunately, it won’t make Bonesy pronounce guys’ names correctly.

@Mac – Sirius has a $4.99 a month all access streaming deal going right now, so I’m saving bigly over my previous car/streaming deal. :)
Hate that new cars lack a CD player. Some impressive after market head units out there, but then you have to replace the stock speakers due to the ohm descrepency. :(
MacJablonski--NotVegasLegend
@Gbear — I had a CD player put in a car I no longer own, but the fear was always not having adequate thermal protection for the discs. I used small coolers that you would otherwise use for cold cans of whatever. Now, I have an inexpensive, but usable, media player that plugs into the cigarette lighter and takes microSD cards. You can listen to music or game replays, and the sound quality is surprisingly good, at least in my old jalopy. And, no mismatched impedance to worry about, but no streaming audio either.
Gbear
@Mac – I have too many CD’s to move on from them, lol!
I have a portable one that plugs into the aux jack, but it’s just not the same. :(
MacJablonski--NotVegasLegend
@Gbear — It’s not a Magnavox, is it? If so, we shopped at the same store! :) BTW, mine is just as useful now.
Gbear
@Mac – This is a fancy, schmancy portable from Klim Electronics (the big name brands stopped making them). Somewhere in my stockpile of stuff is a Sony portable that played thru the cassette player of the car. High end back in the day! :D
Kevin F
While we are nitpicking, it is also the University of North Dakota, not ND University
MacJablonski--NotVegasLegend
@Kevin F — And you can add New Hampshire, Vermont, Michigan, Minnesota, and a few others.
