Over the last several weeks, Pittsburgh Penguins forward Jake Guentzel has been gaining steam as one of the biggest fishes available at this year’s deadline. Even after suffering an injury that will keep him out until the deadline, plenty of competitive teams remain interested in his services for their playoff push.
In tonight’s edition of ’Saturday Headlines’, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the Carolina Hurricanes, Edmonton Oilers, Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights, and Vancouver Canucks as specific teams that have checked in with Pittsburgh regarding Guentzel. Of the five teams listed, factoring in available assets and deadline salary cap space, the Hurricanes, Panthers, and Golden Knights strike as the likeliest landing spots if Guentzel does indeed get moved.
In any trade for Guentzel, a first-round pick will undoubtedly need to go back to Pittsburgh, as well as a young prospect. Just yesterday, the General Manager of the Penguins, Kyle Dubas, told the media that Pittsburgh would place a priority on getting younger in any deal that they make. With the Golden Knights and Panthers having Brendan Brisson and Mackie Samoskevich at their disposal, respectively, they are in advantageous positions to give the Penguins what they are looking for.
All-in-all, there is no guarantee that Pittsburgh will move Guentzel at all, as he has created quite a bond with franchise icon Sidney Crosby over the last several years. Owning a projected $17.54MM available to them on July 1st this summer, the Penguins could opt to sign Guentzel to a long-term contract to take over as the face of the franchise once Crosby’s playing days are over.
Now it’s your turn to vote — will any one of these teams deal for Guentzel by March 8th, or will the Penguins decide to keep him around for the long haul?

Screw it bring Guentzel to Toronto. Would be payback for the kessel trade

You don’t have the good champ. Your farm system has nothing the Pens need and draft picks are garbage in this instance.

Honestly if he and Crosby are super close and he wants to be a penguin for a long time he could really help the team by getting traded amd then signing back with them. Aroldis Chapman was traded for Glebyer Torres, won a World Series and then re uped with the Yanks. Jake could being his team back a great young player and a good pick.

There is a way for the Pens to begin a rebuild without actually rebuilding but retooling instead and still giving Sid and Co. the respect they deserve.
None of the guys getting their numbers retired are going anywhere. I doubt they can find a deal that makes sense for their other HOF’er, either. So assume 87, 71, 58 and 65 stay. Graves is untradeable. Keep DOC.
Trade Jake for a haul. Trade Reilly Smith for something decent.
Listen seriously on Rust, Rakell and Pettersson. Same with Jarry. Blomqvist is progressing well and Ned is serviceable. IF the right offer came along (a first plus another substantial piece or two) they could move on, even as good as he’s been this year.
If anyone wants one of the peripheral pieces (Acciari, Eller, POJ, etc.) move them.
This team needs a new mix and if we move these pieces we’ll have a ton of cap space.
If we bring back cheaper younger (but ready to play in the NHL) players in these deals, we’d have room to absorb a bad deal (or more) in exchange for more assets (the formula the Habs used with Pearson and Monahan) and hope for a rebuound (if not, move on).
Adequate replacements can be found for all but Jake (and Jarry if they move him, but they might already have the guy in Blomqvist) in free agency or trades. Pile up assets while retooling on the fly (and the cheap).

Agreed I’m all about trading jarry, although he is playing well this team needs to save money to compete for the cores twilight years so getting a haul for Jake and whatever you can for smith or rakell plus what should be a decent return for jarry would at least be better than watching the future Rico fatta and Ryan Malone dominate the stat sheets praying for another Lemieux/Crosby
yeasties
I don’t think Jarry gets you anything. He’s under contract for several years; teams are very reluctant to trade for these kinds of players unless you’re taking a boat anchor back in return. For a player on a long-term contract to have value, they have to be outperforming their contract. That applies to no one on the Penguins, as far as I know.
Pettersson and Guentzel I think are the only Piitsburgh players that have any real value, and they should be traded if Dubas really wants the team to get younger.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I am also dubious that there is a market strong enough for Jarry to fetch the price I’d ask.
Not because he’s not worth it, he is, but because the teams that need him are not positioned to pay such a price.
But, if that price does gets met, bye.
Rust has value, but also has a NTC. Eller has been pretty good and would be a good rental but he has another year on his deal which likely limits the market.

Guess what? Everyone on the roster should be available absent Sid. Geno and Letang – if anyone wants them, get something young in return. Those are probably offseason as we would have to take on some garbage from the other teams and retain.
This shouldn’t be keep the core. The core is stale.
You won’t be able to trade Jarry now. If you do that is an offseason move. Karlsson is untradeable unfortunately.
brucenewton
He’ll likely end up in Vegas.
Johnny Z
To Vegas, for a 1st, Nic Roy, and Ivan Morozov and Pitt retains half on Jake
TJECK109
Vegas has a much better chance of re-acquiring Reilly Smith than they do getting Guentzel
'Tang It
Aside from being in the same division, Carolina makes a ton of sense.
sweetg
He will endup in vegas. At least of stone /eichel is out till playoffs. Gary has salary cap only for regular season., players are not paid salary in playoffs. Gary has no cap for playoffs.
buffbry
He’s going to Detroit
Feury
Dark horse in this for me is Detroit. It-s exa tly what they need to further deepen the lineup, and one more playoff grisled vet. Then sign him to an extension with the boat loads of cap room. 3-4 years. This could be Stevie Y’s big push.
NSco1996
people keep saying Vegas but they literally have no assets to trade, they might have their 1st but they have like no prospects, Brisson is like the only decent to good prospect they got, i just don’t see it working there

I don’t really see much rationale in it being Florida. They’re pretty much a complete team as is… They are absolutely on fire since the Christmas break. Plus they don’t really have much to trade away. Would not be shocked if they either stand firm or only bring in some depth for the bottom of their roster.
aberdeen101
The start of the haul for Jake is two prospects. A first round pick in this draft will usually be late and this is a crummy draft. It’s a worthless piece. If Pittsburgh has to retain money or accept a plug that isn’t good moving forward, then a first is added or another prospect.
Edmonton – Broberg, Holloway (I have reservations he will amount to anything). I would prefer Bourgault. Then a first if we have to retain.
Vegas … I HATE THE MATCHUP as far as return. I don’t think much of Brisson to be honest. Cormier’s stock has dropped significantly.
Colorado – don’t see a good match. Their prospect pool is one of the worst in the league.
Gbear
Wings definately are in the best position to make that deal. Canes could use him the most though.
NSco1996
The Wings are a surprise team this year who’s also on the rise, unless they can do a sign and trade i think they should look for cheaper options or players with term
NSco1996
I think Vancouver makes a lot of sense here, also a guy i believe Rutherford drafted, Vancouver is definitely going all in right now understandably, leading the league for the Presidents Trophy I think they’ll definitely be one of the teams in the running come March 8th
