Cutter Gauthier shared that he is currently planning to sign his entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks following the conclusion of Boston College’s season, per team reporter Derek Lee. This news comes after Gauthier’s sudden trade to Anaheim, with the Ducks sending Jamie Drysdale and a 2025 second-round pick back to the Philadelphia Flyers.
Gauthier added that he feels Boston College has a good chance of winning the 2024 Beanpot and the NCAA championship. The Eagles currently rank on top of USCHO.com’s Men’s Ice Hockey Rankings, boasting a 13-3-1 record. They are tied with the University of Maine for the fewest losses of any top-20 team.
Gauthier has commanded the top center role with Boston College this season, scoring 23 points in his 17 appearances this year – a mark that’s ranked second on the team, behind New York Rangers prospect Gabe Perreault, who has 25 points. Gauthier earned the top role partway through his freshman year last season when he led the team in scoring with 37 points in 32 games. His goal-scoring has also been of note in college, with his 13 goals in 17 games ranked fourth in the NCAA in goals-per-game.
Other notes from around the league:
- If and when young centerman Filip Chytil is able to return from long-term injured reserve is likely to dictate how the New York Rangers approach the trade deadline, per NHL.com’s Dan Rosen. Rosen shares that the Rangers could certainly be an active team as the trade deadline approaches, but that Chytil’s $4.4375MM cap hit will severely limit the team’s ability to add talent should it be added back to their bill. Chytil has been out of action since November 2nd, missing 23 games. The 24-year-old recently returned to his home country of Czechia to continue recovering from what is believed to be a concussion. Chytil recorded 22 goals and 45 points in 74 games last season.
- Detroit Red Wings prospect Nate Danielson has been traded in the WHL, moving from the Brandon Wheat Kings to the Portland Winterhawks. In return, Brandon has received Nicholas Johnson, Rhett Ravndahl, two first-round picks, and a fifth-round pick. Johnson hasn’t played since December 10th, battling his way back from a lower-body injury. Danielson is one of only two players on the Brandon roster scoring at a point-per-game pace, managing 26 points in as many appearances. He led the team in scoring last year with 33 goals and 78 points in 68 games – a mark that was enough for Detroit to select him with the ninth-overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft. He now moves to a Portland team that ranks second in the WHL’s Western Conference, with a 25-10-2 record.

Hope Quitter Gauthier enjoys playing for a franchise that barely gets attention in their area even when they are good.

Quitter Goatee-eh! LOL

So do you hate every player each yr that doesn’t sign with the team that drafted him?
Or are you a Flyers fan that hated Lindros as that’s how he got to the Flyers?
Just curious as there are players every yr that refuse to sign.
MacJablonski--NotVegasLegend
@bruin4ever — That’s very true. This year, though, Gauthier is a bit different. No one seems to know the real reasons for his decision and have attributed it to him being discouraged from signing early, due to the alleged toxicity in the Flyers’ locker room. What hasn’t been discussed is the possibility that Gauthier might have insisted on being part of the “fixing” process, but Flyers management didn’t want that. The usual “we only want to put you in a position to succeed” excuse. Some players have the mental game to plow through adversity and not get dragged under. In other words, those rare few are mature beyond their years. Not saying Gauthier is like that, but we’ll see in a couple of years, I guess.
Black Ace57
Lindros was justifiably upset because the team handled his concussions so poorly that he almost died when they tried to put him on an airplane.

He had every right to demand a trade. Quitter on the other hand never played a game for the Flyers, told them when drafted how much he wanted to be a Flyer, and is doing this because of Kevin Hayes being mad the team thought he was a locker room cancer. Nice try though as if the Boston fanbase wouldn’t react the same if it was your player.
yeasties
Remove the emotion from this. The Philly media and Flyers management seem to be needlessly incendiary, though I suppose it does reinforce the particularly poor reputation that Philly has always carried.
Player gets drafted by team. Player negotiates with team for a contract. If they can’t agree, player becomes a free agent. The player has the right to refuse to sign a contract, but risks losing quite a bit of money as a result. The team has the right to refuse to offer a contract, but risks losing the value of the draft pick. Regardless of reasons why, both sides have free will in this matter.
Zakis
Pretty sure dude meant Lindros demand he not play for Quebec, not Philly
MacJablonski--NotVegasLegend
@yeasties — “The player has the right to refuse to sign a contract, but risks losing quite a bit of money as a result.” The problem there is we’re talking ELCs, so the money lost might be performance bonuses, which shouldn’t add up to all that much. For a rookie, that number could be relatively substantial, of course. Not all teams get stupid with ELC bonus $, though.
Black Ace57
Zakis if he meant from Quebec to Philly then his point is even worse. “You like it when people demand trades to your team but don’t like it when people demand trades away from your team.” Of course just like I would be a Crosby fan if he was a Flyer and would have hated Giroux if he were a Penguin. What a meaningless argument.
mcdavidlikeamac
That has been utterly denied by Gauthier, Hayes and Torts. Hayes had nothing to do with it. You’re acting like these reporters and because of them not only was Gauthier receiving death threats but so now was Hayes. Can you imagine, death threats to a 19 year old kid, people saying to Kevin Hayes they were glad his brother died. Wow that’s some classy fans over in Philly. All over a a guy who hasn’t played a game in the NHL. People are seriously ignorant. I don’t care how much you love this game it’s still just a GAME. Do you threaten to kill your mom if she knocks over your jenga tower? Get real Philly. Classless fans.
AndyMeyer
Poor reputation Philly has always carried? If you want to be here and play hard, we’ll love you. If you don’t, we don’t want you. How is that poor? Ask Ben Simmons and Carson Wentz how that turned out. Even Matthew Barnaby, who was so heavily despised here in town, tweeted out he loves the passion the city brings, relished the boos and would’ve loved to have played here. For whatever reason Gauthier didn’t want to be here, that’s fine. I agree with your point that both sides have free will in this matter. But don’t just ghost the team and refuse to communicate. That just shows a lack of maturity and professionalism. Nothing to do with hockey at that point. You just sound bitter because you didn’t get what YOU wanted.
No offense. It’s just tiresome to hear/read the same old narrative that Philadelphia is this big, negative place. Do we have our ups and downs? Sure. But then again, so does every city that’s passionate about their teams.
AndyMeyer
For every idiot, psychopath “fan” who spews that type of garbage, there are thousands of passionate, loving and diehard fans here in Philly. Did we throw bananas at Wayne Simmons? Did we have articles written about decades long racism towards athletes? There’s horrible people everywhere. So do me a solid and don’t lump those who don’t participate in that kind of garbage into your “classless” fans rant.
Black Ace57
So me believing a report means I condone and support sending death threats to people? You are insane. I can not like a guy without wanting him to be threatened.
Black Ace57
Exactly right Andy. People are going way overboard here saying not liking a guy after he essentially demands a trade somehow makes you a hypocrite and means they deserve death threats for them and their families.
Nightrob
They are just bitter. They aren’t hockey fans just little trolls. They have no idea the caliber of player they got with Drysdale.
AndyMeyer
@Nightrob
As a fan, I’m happy he’s on board! Briere did what he had to do and made the trade while Cutter’s value was high. It’s been a while since I’ve had faith in upper management. Briere and co. seem to be steering the ship in the right direction
Nightrob
Child, you have literally no idea what went down. You are taking Philly managements word at face value no questions asked. Flyers management stated they have not received ANY communication with Cutter or his team, leading up to the trade…yet they magically had a list of teams he was willing to be traded to after it was known he no longer wanted to be with the organization, but do go ahead and only believe one side of a situation without knowing the other. No one expects more from lowly Philly fans.
mcdavidlikeamac
@Andy – you’re right that wasn’t fair of me. I’m sure there are just as many fools in Edmonton who would do the same. Just hate seeing this garbage over a sport.
Black Ace57
Not true. I love Drysdale I can both be happy we got him and not like a guy who doesn’t want to be a Flyer.
Black Ace57
“Nancy-boy.” Calls us trolls yet uses offensive term to describe gay men.
Black Ace57
What normal Flyers fans want is to boo him. To send death threats and what people were telling Hayes after his brother’s death is beyond the pale and has been called out by many and none of those fans belong.
AndyMeyer
Well it’s hard to know what the other side’s story is when said other side stated he wants to keep it a “personal matter”. I think if anything Philly management has been transparent in their part of the situation. No questions asked? Well they’ve spent the latter part of the past week answering questions so there’s that part.
“Lowly Philly fans”? Yawn. Next….
AndyMeyer
“They have no idea the caliber of player they got with Drysdale”
Might want to try and read some articles written here in Philly and you’d be quite surprised that the “little trolls” you so put beneath you know a little more than you think. Could it be that they know more than you do? Hmmmmmmmm

The Beanpot tournament? Who cares! Old and tired regional snooze!

As with most things in life. If my people do something is okay. If the others do it wrong. they should be punished. Lindros/Gauthier same. Both had reasons for not going. Support players having a choice where they play. look back at indros flyers do have history mistreating players.
AndyMeyer
In what way did the Flyers mistreat Gauthier?
Black Ace57
They only “mistreated” him in trading away Kevin Hayes who became friends with him and has trashed the org to other players ever since. It’s part of what killed the Krug deal in the summer. He was traded for being a cancer in the locker room and he’s only confirmed it since.
User 517680827
Not sure still the exact reason for gauthier quitting on Philly. What’s bad is if it came down to money (with the ELC). Lindros power play wasn’t & gauthier seems to be. Philly is obviously a blue collar town & not fans of greedy athletes. JD drew still isn’t welcome here & gauthier will get same treatment.
Johnny Z
Philly is getting a better person of good character in Jamie Drysdale, that is for certain. As far as hockey talent goes, well Philly again has someone that can play big minutes now, and we will all have to wait and see what the future brings. Philly won the trade, for now.
User 318310488
Gauthier’s reasons for not signing in Philly are really none of our business, We are simply lovers/consumers of the game, We aren’t employed by any team and we aren’t in the lineup. Congrats once again to Flyer fans for being overzealous meatheads! They never disappoint.
AndyMeyer
So telling a player “see ya later” if you don’t want to be here and then welcoming and embracing the young player they got in return who DOES want to be here makes us “overzealous meatheads”? Ok. Congrats to you buddy on being just another part of the lazy, unoriginal narrative that talks trash on a city and their fans they no zero about. *Applause*
User 318310488
No. It’s the Irresponsible fueling of egregious rumours, The planned vengefulness toward Gauthier, And the unspeakable death threats. It’s no wonder he doesn’t wanna play there.
AndyMeyer
No offense my man, but it’s pretty stupid to group an entire fanbase off of the disgusting comments of a very small few. And I can assure you, a lot of the athletes in this town want to play here; regardless of heartless comments. Those people aren’t fans. They’re psychopaths.
mcdavidlikeamac
I said the same thing initially out of a misguided anger but I won’t lie I’m certain every fan base has these nut jobs who utter death threats toward a player. I also believe given he’s playing a public sport he owes the fans some sort of explanation but honestly given the response he’s received from people I’d probably keep it a secret. Drysdale is a better player now and I don’t think even when Gauthier is established as an NHL will I think differently. I certainly could be wrong but one great WJC does not an NHL star make. Watch him in Boston College – he looks decent but he certainly doesn’t stand out. Against his age group he looked good but then again so did Nail Yakupov so to those who think Cutter is a sure-fire superstar his ceiling in his draft year was predicted as 60-70 point power forward and I honestly after watching him some in his mainstay league, the NCAA, I wouldn’t expect more than that. Josh Anderson comes to mind, but I think he’ll be better but definitely overhyped. I think the thought of him playing with Michkov was tantalizing to many also. I will say this even if he proves me wrong and does become a PPG player you won’t see it for minimum 5-6 years from now especially as a bigger player which all the hype-boyz will have called him a bust and moved on. Drysdale is going to be good now and he will only improve as he gets closer to his prime. And with Michkov in 2 years on the team (unless he pulls a Cutter) watch out! That PP will be a points machine.
User 318310488
And thank you Philadelphia sports media once again for lazy speculative content!
NativeAmerican
Welcome to Anaheim Cutter. You’re going to love the fanbase here. Might have to change from #19 tho as Troy Terry wears that number here.
Johnny Z
Quitter will demand #19 and Terry wil be traded! LOL
