Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman believes that the Los Angeles Kings could be willing to move on from winger Arthur Kaliyev if they can make a swap and acquire a depth player with some edge to their game as a potential replacement for the 22-year-old. Kaliyev has struggled to carve out a role with the Kings and may have reached a point in Los Angeles where it might be best for the team and player to go their separate ways.
Kaliyev has been a healthy scratch several times this month and has struggled this season with just six goals and eight assists in 38 games. Kaliyev has had his name pop up in trade rumors over the last few weeks and is likely looking for more consistency in his ice time and deployment. The former second-round pick looked as though he was turning the corner last year with 13 goals and 15 assists in 56 games but wasn’t able to carry his momentum into this season despite having a strong training camp.
Much has been made about Kaliyev’s offensive style not suiting the system that Kings head coach Todd McLellan likes to deploy as McLellan likes his teams to play an energy game where attention to detail and defensive responsibility are top of mind. Kaliyev’s talents lie more in the offensive side of the game, while his defensive skills are not his strong suit.
The Kings could wait to see what happens over the next few weeks with the club’s play heading into the trade deadline but given the struggles with Kaliyev’s development, it appears they would like to address some of their needs elsewhere before it’s too late.

Jeff Carter for him.
HockeySenseNot
I think they want a player that would help the team, not a player they were happy to get rid of in the first place.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Darn, this was a super serious trade offer and not at all just venting about that bum Hextall and his buddy Carter and now you have crushed my dreams.
HockeySenseNot
Sorry about that. It was totally innocent…
66TheNumberOfTheBest
It’s all good.
Us Pens fans know full well that Carter is utterly unmovable (he has a full NMC for one) I figured everyone else did, too.
HockeySenseNot
I actually thought that you were saying that LA would want to bring a player back from past glories. For the point that the Pens would love to get rid of him (I would think). I also think that NMC for older players are so the team can’t send them down, as apposed to sending them to other teams. The player just has more say in where he may go.
I thought that you were kidding, but ya never know in these feeds.

Maybe if PLD is included! Kings can’t give up on Arthur already, just remember how long it took Kempe to mature!
User 318310488
Kaliyev is unfortunately the scapegoat, PLD is the pretty boy that needs a kick in the shorts!
Johnny Z
Kaliyev and PLD and a 2025 3rd for Anderson, Monahan, WIFI
MacJablonski--NotVegasLegend
@Johnny Z — Getting rid of PLD. Definitely needs the “Double Secret 150% retention clause” implemented. He’ll be hard-pressed to be worth half of that $8.5MM they are giving him. At the end of his entry on CapFriendly, I expected the (-) indicator to say, UFA at the end of the 3rd millennium. That cap hit is effectively trade protection, without official NTC/NMC. Kind of reminds you of the holiday fruit cake that has been passed around since the mid 1500s. :)
wreckage
@Mac, remember he all but demanded out of Winnipeg and his only “willingness” to resign was LA or MTL. Winnipeg scored a HUGE haul for him and LA will not be doing so and he can basically only go to 1 team between now and when his NMC reduces in about 5 years. Most likely the worst contract in the league going forward goes to…. PLD!
MacJablonski--NotVegasLegend
@wreckage — Yep, worst in the league, running away. It’s mystifying how some teams think that “they” are the ones who can fix whatever broken player they fall in love with. Those other teams don’t have a universal whisperer who can get through to the problem child. Then they realize that guy is the overweight one in the corner with various crumbs stuck around his mouth, looking like a goatee from “Bladerunner”.
wreckage
Winnipeg gave it a shot as his dad coaches on the Manitoba Moose and thought maybe that could reign him in. Nope. And his play on the left coast has made him completely untouchable for a developing club like the Habs. “Kid” should focus on his career and attempt to get back to his skill level and utilize his skill set. Could be a 1C if he played to his potential… Instead he is no better than a Patrick Maroon without the playoff consistency so far.
Swiney50
Kaliyev has been overrated from the get-go… (imo) Now, in his defense, Maclellan doesn’t run a system that benefits a pure triggerman/winger like Arthur, so maybe hold onto him if ur Blake and have decided a new bench boss is coming in and see if he can do a 180…
He can always be dealt for a pick since the Kings DO need cap space and the Deadline is coming up not too long from now. Moving him out gives a slot to someone like Fagemo or even Chromiak should he be ready for a look at the NHL level.

Kings have rushed too many players and should have let them develop a couple of more years in the minors before bringing them up. Kaliyev, Byfield, Bjornfot, Vallardi, Berg and even Clarke should still be in Ontario developing his defensive game!
Swiney50
Clarke definitely needs to be in Ontario.
I thought Toby was ready to be a 3rd pair D-man when Maata walked, but T-mac kinda blew that up.
Byfield would’ve been playing like this last season if it weren’t for that ankle injury in pre-season, but he’s here now and really pulling his weight.
To be fair (again) to Arthur, he’s not really getting enough looks w/the right centermen to maximize his offensive skillset.
I feel our development has been good, maybe even really good with most of our draft picks, but there’s been a real disconnect with Todd and the younger players, and sorry-not sorry, they are what we need going forward as Kopi & Dewey age-out.
We still have enough racetrack left to get in and charge thru the Playoffs should Blake find the right fit behind the bench after dismissing Todd, which I feel is happening soon.
Cheers. #GoKings

I think Blake has done a good job but the way the coaching staff/front office develop players is among the worst in hockey. Guys like Fagemo and Arty easily have top 6 winger potential but they refuse to give them an actual chance. Fagemo they lost to waivers and were extremely lucky to get back. Arty plays on the 4th line and if he makes a mistake they bench him for a month. I’ve had enough of this old boys club clown show.
kingsfan1968
Playing less than 10 minutes a game on the 4th line and maybe part time on 2nd PP won’t get him goals. We may need another Kid line to lead us to the promised land. Laferriere- Byfield- Arte!
NativeAmerican
Keep him, dump all the old guys. Rebuild now!
Gbear
I’ve frankly puzzled as to why the Kings haven’t made a coaching change already. Too much talent to be struggling like they are.
MacJablonski--NotVegasLegend
@Gbear — This keeps happening, year after year. It’s almost like a team has a case of 20 or so guys taking simultaneous headshots and failing to get out of protocol. Group amnesia, aka, “We forgot how to implement our tried-and-true successful game strategy.” Unfortunately for the Kings, they look like they’re clinging on to the ladder, as it is falling backward, watching their playoff chances potentially go up in smoke.
Donovan Voigt
wonder if his value is at the point where nashville could move Trenin for him
Donovan Voigt
could Trotz maybe get him for a player like Yakov Trenin? might be a stretch but makes me wonder what Kaliyev is valued at league wide
vicd93
Way too early to give up on him. I would rather trade Grundstrom. But we do need to find a way to play Turcotte and Fagemo consistently.
Extra_Sauce
I hate to give up on a player who has so much potential just because our coach sucks. Lots of trades lately are coming back to haunt us. Let’s hope we lose more games so Blake has no choice but to can Todd. No deals in my opinion are going to save the season. (In best Trump voice) Sorry, Todd….But…You’re FIRED!!!
dm867
Kaliyev has 30 goal potential. Just not under this coach, who doesn’t even use him on the PP anymore–where he could be deadly if used properly. Of course, when you have your leading goal scorer on the 2nd power play line it says a lot about the system.
Mr Chi Pig
Someone named Pierre Luc is a cool guy? Hmm
Wolf Hoffmann
The truth is not a single one of Blakes draft picks have worked out. Even Byfield is not what they were hoping for. The PLD trade was a team destroyer. Vowels and Vilardi were part of the heart of the team. The Kings are a seriously flawed team that needs to be torn down and a new rebuild began. They should take lessons from the Yotes in how to build a solid team.
kingsfan1968
I’m not a fan of PLD, but you have to put him in a position to succeed. He, Kayliev, Fagemo are all scorers. Is PLD the 2nd coming of Kopitar like the Kings brass described? NOT even close. I believe he played his best hockey in the past as a RW, but not yet with the Kings. Try these lines until Lizotte and Arvidsson are back. Kempe – Kopi – PLD) Fiala – Byfield – Moore) Laferriere – Danault – Kayliev) Grundstrom – Turcotte – Lewis) Defense DD – MA) VG – MR) AE – JS)
