Free agent forward Alex Galchenyuk is entering the NHL and NHLPA’s player assistance program after being arrested on multiple charges earlier this month and having his contract for next season terminated by the Arizona Coyotes, ESPN’s Emily Kaplan reports today.
Just days after being terminated on July 13, multiple reports had obtained the police report of Galchenyuk’s July 9 arrest in Scottsdale, Arizona, which revealed Galchenyuk allegedly made violent threats and used racial slurs towards officers. He has since reached out to apologize to the Scottsdale Police offers involved in a letter expressing remorse, Kaplan says.
Per Kaplan, Galchenyuk could enter the player assistance program as early as today. He was charged with various misdemeanors stemming from the arrest, including a hit-and-run charge as originally reported by The Athletic’s Katie Strang, and released on his own recognizance after the arrest.
Kaplan says Galchenyuk has also apologized directly to the Coyotes organization. While not signed by an NHL team, Galchenyuk is still eligible to receive assistance as a member of the NHLPA. His entrance to the program will not impact his contract status with Arizona, and he will remain an unrestricted free agent after exiting the program.

Time for him to play in the K with all the Russians he mentioned during his meltdown. This was the nail in the coffin for his NHL career.

So of course what Galchenyuk did was bad and he’s suffering the fallout from his actions, but didn’t the Preds new HC Brunette spend a few hours in a Florida county jail earlier this year for a similar incident? And yet there seems to be no repercussions like what Galchenyuk is undergoing.
I dunno. :/
SpeakOfTheDevils
Not even close to similar
rdiddy75
Brunette didn’t threaten to have cops and their families killed that is the big difference.
Gbear
Of course, but Brunette isn’t exactly squeaky clean.

Don’t backpedal too fast or you will fall over.
Gbear
Who’s backpedeling? Don’t you find it at least a little bit odd that Brunette faced little to no scrutiny over his incident, especially being a coach?
SpeakOfTheDevils
Oh you use a link to NY Post, everything about you has been explained
KRB
I think the difference here Bear, is the meltdown, and threats made by Galchenyuk. Apparently the NHL doesn’t have a zero tolerance policy towards Driving Under the Influence. Simple DUI is fine, in the NHL’s eyes, but if you turn it into an episode of Cops, they bring the hammer down. Color me surprised. It’s not like the NHL is at all capricious about dealing out punishment with DOPS.
doghockey
I think you did fall over. You went from attempting to make the actions of Brunette and Galchenyuk similar, which they were not, to yapping that Brunette is not exactly squeaky clean. Oh, and Andrew Brunette faced plenty of scrutiny over his incident.
Gbear
You implied in your own mind that I was equating the two instances when what I was doing was questioning the disparity in response from the league. I could use what happened to Jim Montgomery while in Dallas as another example as well.
Gbear
The story in the NY Post was no different than in any other publication. If you have a problem with that, who cares.

Does the phrase ” Too Little, Too Late” sound like it applies here?

Ah yes! The run to rehab public relations ploy!
doghockey
Yep, you sure figured out his diabolical plot. Nothing gets past you. Or, quite possibly, he does need some help. Oh, and gotta figure that if there was a Poster Assistance Program available here, you would probably be the first to have an intervention.

I grew up in a family with serious, generational anger issues carried over from the “old country”. It’s easy to dunk on this guy for acting like a tool, but it’s harder to know where he came from. If he is pursuing a path to becoming a better person and fighting his demons, then that’s a good thing. I hope he can better himself.
MarkW
Do the rehab get well come back and if you have value you’ll have opportunity but eyes will be on you now. That’s how it went with Vrana only Detroit then gave him to St Louis where he’s doing well. I hope Galchenyuk takes advantage of the opportunity.
PyramidHeadcrab
I don’t think the NHL is in the cards for him at this point, except maybe in a bottom six role. But while he’s an NHLPA member, he is wise to take advantage of assistance offered. Hockey lasts til you’re 40… Coming to peace with your issues is a lifelong thing.

@Pyramidheadcrab
“Hockey lasts til you’re 40…”
Messers. Howe, Jagr, Chelios and Chara would disagree with you.
Karlander
His NHL career is done. Once a promising talent, he kept going backwards in recent years. I guess we know at least part of the reason.

No mention of an apology to the cops concerned…
KRB
He did apologize. Emily Kaplan of ESPN reports:
“He has since reached out to apologize to the Scottsdale Police offers involved in a letter expressing remorse, Kaplan says.”
wreckage
He would need to read the entire article in order to catch that KRB.
KRB
@Wreckage
Not the whole article. The first and second paragraphs would have been sufficient, but he couldn’t even get that far.

Substance abuse is serious and he has been spiraling out of control for some time. There is definitely something in his subconscious affecting his destructive behavior! Hope he takes this seriously and gets the help he needs!
