A busy day for trades has gotten even busier, as Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that the Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers are closing in on a deal that would send Anthony DeAngelo back to Carolina. DeAngelo most recently played for the Hurricanes back during the 2021-22 season before he found his way to Philadelphia.
Already carrying an imposing top-four, the Hurricanes appear to be well on their way to making their defensive unit even better. Although he can be a bit of a liability on the defensive side of the puck, DeAngelo has been one of the better blue-line scorers over the past couple of seasons. He has already shown the ability to score 10+ goals a year, and his ability to move the puck is by far his best asset.
Much like the deal that will be sending Kevin Hayes to the St. Louis Blues, it appears that the deal for DeAngelo may take some time as well. The Flyers should be expected to take back some salary in the trade, or another team may be involved. It was only one season ago that the Hurricanes decided that DeAngelo’s asking price was too rich for their blood, and shipped him off to Philadelphia. If the Flyers are willing to price down DeAngelo’s contract more to Carolina’s liking, this would seem like an ideal fit for both the team and the player.
Although the trade for DeAngelo ultimately makes Carolina a better team on paper, it does complicate their cap situation for next season. Already needing to sign Brett Pesce, Brady Skjei, and Jalen Chatfield, DeAngelo also becomes an unrestricted free agent after next season, joining that list. If DeAngelo and Skjei are more inclined to sign team-friendly contracts to stay in Carolina, this deal may make the burden of trading Pesce this offseason much lighter for the Hurricanes.
As far as the Flyers’ return goes, not much is known at this point. Charlie O’Connor of The Athletic reports that a trade is indeed in the works between the two teams, but the Flyers will not be receiving much in return. Last offseason, Philadelphia acquired DeAngelo from Carolina for a package including a second-round pick in 2024, a conditional third-round pick in 2023 (which would become the Flyers’ third-round pick), and a fourth-round pick in 2022. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic notes that the Flyers would likely only get a prospect from Carolina, although that prospect is currently unknown up to this point.
In any case, it is another example of two teams headed in two separate directions. After the news from today, with both Hayes and DeAngelo, the Flyers are committed to clearing house, and the Hurricanes are looking to bulk up for a postseason run in 2024.
Gbear
That would seem to indicate that Pesce may not be back. Not a good trade off, IMO.
DigbyGuy
There was already speculation that he had priced himself out, so if they’re losing him anyway why not boost the PP?
Gbear
Sure, but still a net loss on D. Hate when teams can’t retain their home grown talent.
itsmeheyhii
Agreed, its not even close. Pesce is a shutdown defensive beast. TDA can score but sucks defensively.
dswaim
This trade has no bearing on the Pesce situation either way. They’re both UFAs after the season. DeAngelo will be playing with Chatfield on the 3rd pairing and qB on the PP2
itsmeheyhii
You dont know that. Until Pesce is extended, there is a chance Chatfield is a potential replacement which opens 3RD for TDA.
DarkSide830
If DeAngelo’s value is indeed down, I see no need to make this trade at the moment.
Black Ace57
They need to trade him Torts doesn’t want him on the team. If he’s a healthy scratch a bunch of games that will only make his trade value worse.
DarkSide830
If Torts can prove that the Flyers have 6 better D at any given time then by all means. But good luck to him with that.
Black Ace57
It doesn’t really matter they aren’t going to compete next year they will be one of the worst teams in the league. DeAngelo wouldn’t be around the next time the Flyers are good anyway. Best to get something for him.
DarkSide830
Yeah. Best to get something for him – which is why you wait if you have to to get something and not just dump him for nothing now.
Nha Trang
(chuckles) So. A guy who’s been suspended, healthy scratched, traded from and/or waived outright for antics and being a headcase by *every team he’s ever played for*, from juniors on up, suddenly Carolina thinks he’s NOW turned over a new leaf? Well, blessings be upon them. Have at it, guys.
dswaim
The only year he wasn’t a distraction was the season he played with the Canes
Nha Trang
… and even so they were fast enough to unload him the next offseason.
amk1920
He’s a good player
Black Ace57
FWIW if you get offered too much in a trade with Chuck Fletcher it doesn’t matter how much you like the guy.
bruin4ever
And it was also when he was only on a 1 yr show me contract, then wanted his payday and got it from Philly!
These players don’t change for long!
ie: E. Kane
Grocery stick
Seriously I was hoping for this to happen.
Hurricanes ADA was a whole different player. Mutual respect between him, coach and the room
Nha Trang
@ amk1920: DeAngelo is a *talented* player. There’s a difference. Mike Tyson was one of the great boxers of the last generation. Antonio Brown’s skills are manifest. So are Kyrie Irving’s. And so on and so forth. There’ve been many players in every sport who’ve drowned their skills in drugs, alcohol, gambling, mental issues, being out of control, domestic abuse, assaulting teammates or officials, etc.
And like Brown and Irving, DeAngelo’s a guy who wears out his welcome just about everywhere he goes.
dswaim
He’s welcome in Raleigh NC
sdub124
disagree
surgalt
They didn’t unload him, he was a UFA free to sign with the highest bidder. Canes traded his signing rights to Philly who then overpaid him, and now need to “unload him”. He is welcome back as long as the Flyers retain salary.
sdub124
i don’t need you to man-splain the ends and outs to me. he has a trash attitude and i don’t want him on the team.
Black Ace57
*ins and outs
sdub124
you’re cool
itsmeheyhii
@surgalt: He was an RFA.
jdgoat
Deangelo is definitely going to go down as having one of the most interesting careers of this era
sdub124
Every Carolina fan screaming “WHYYYYYY” and “PLEASE GOD NO” right now
surgalt
Not this Canes fan, as long as the Flyers pay a big chunk of his salary. He is here again with one year deal. Bottom 3rd pairing Dman, solid 2nd unit PP guy.
blueavenger77
Why the heck would the Canes want that dope back? Perfect example of talent (minus defense) without character.
jdgoat
Makes me believe he finally learned his lesson after burning his final bridge while with the Rangers.
User 318310488
DeAngelo is kind of a power play specialist and a huge liability at 5 on 5 but brings snarl.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Is he going to displace Burns on the top PP unit? If not, this makes no sense.
And if that is the plan, displacing Burns makes no sense also.
And going from Pesce to DeAngelo will only make them less playoff worthy…they appear to be a team built for the regular season already. This would only worsen that.
Dubious move.
Danny Briere is cleaning house, though. Flyers fans should be happy.
surgalt
He need not replace Burns on the first PP unit, but could replace Ghost on the 2nd PP unit. TDA will replace a 3rd pairing player, not a 2nd pairing player.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Bringing in a guy who has only one skill, playing the point on a power play, to use him for 1 min and 34 seconds a night in that role is dumb.
The only reason to roster this player is to have him run your PP1.
SteveC
How many PP specialists do the Canes need?
surgalt
Assuming Ghost is now not resigned, Canes would have 1, which is an ok number.
raven88
No hand-wringing from this Canes fan. TD had 51 points when he played for the Canes in 21-22 and 42 points this past season for the Flyers. He’ll play with Chatfield on the 3rd pairing and run the 2nd PP unit. While TD is average defensively, he moves the puck really well (something the Canes need) and has a bigger offensive upside than all of our defenders except Burns.
If we can get him back for a prospect at 2.5-3 million with Philly retaining salary, what’s not to like about that deal?
I understand that there are those who don’t like TD because of his reputation in New York. Maybe that situation there was fairly reported, maybe not. But he had no problems in his previous stint with the Canes. He also stood up for his teammates on the ice when he was here. That matters.
Rod will keep him in line.
Nha Trang
… his reputation in New York, and his reputation in Philadelphia, and his reputation in Sarnia, and his reputation in Syracuse, and his reputation in Arizona. Honestly, the degree to which people shrug over this guy is mind-boggling. He was pulled from the ice by his own coach in juniors TWICE, and suspended THREE TIMES by the league. In the minors, he was repeatedly healthy scratched for behavioral issues, and suspended for abusing officials. In Arizona, he was suspended for three games for assaulting a referee. The Rangers made him a healthy scratch for about twenty games worth for “maturity issues” in his first season there alone, and we all know what happened in his second season in New York, including punching out his own goalie and being shunted to the taxi squad for almost all of it before being waived. Got a suspension in Philly as well.
And there are people on this forum who claim to believe that the only reason anyone’s against DeAngelo is his politics. What the pluperfect f*ck.
