The Oilers are among the teams that have inquired about the availability of Flyers winger Travis Konecny, reports Kurt Leavins of the Edmonton Journal. It’s expected that Edmonton will shop around to try to find a forward upgrade but fitting in Konecny’s contract, one that has two years left on it at $5.5MM, would be tricky given their own cap situation. The 26-year-old tied his career high in points this season with 61 despite missing 22 games down the stretch due to an upper-body injury. With Philadelphia appearing to be heading for a rebuild, it stands to reason that GM Daniel Briere will be fielding plenty of calls about his leading scorer in the coming weeks.
Elsewhere in the East:
- Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli suggests that Sabres center Tyson Jost’s arbitration eligibility could be problematic for Buffalo this offseason. The 25-year-old was claimed off waivers back in November and is owed a $2.25MM qualifying offer. However, Seravalli points out that Jost’s career numbers are similar to Andrew Copp’s two years ago and the former Winnipeg forward was awarded a $3.64MM AAV in a hearing. Such a price tag for Jost would be difficult to justify which makes him a decent non-tender candidate if a deal can’t be reached before the deadline at the end of the month.
- MLive’s Ansar Khan examines some coaching candidates for Detroit’s AHL vacancy. ECHL Toledo head coach Dan Watson has been considered a logical choice for a while but Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde indicated that Watson’s family situation is a strong tie for him to stay at that level. Red Wings assistant Alex Tanguay has never run a bench before so the opening could be an opportunity for him to get his feet wet in that role while Khan suggests that another Detroit assistant, Jay Varady, could also be a strong candidate and has a head coaching background at lower levels in the past. The top position with Grand Rapids has been open for nearly two months now.

I understand why Edmonton would want Konecy, but I don’t really see them as a fit as a trading partner. The Oilers would probably want the Flyers to take Yamamoto in return for cap reasons, but I don’t think the Flyers would want him. The Oilers just don’t have the young assets that the Flyers would desire in return.
DarkSide830
2 firsts plus Kailer for TK. EZ.

I think the Flyers would pass on that one. They can get a better deal for Konecy somewhere else. Two firsts that are likely late first round picks & an underachieving winger isn’t what the Flyers would be looking for in a deal. They could probably get a young forward with more upside & control than Yamomato from another team.
Joe Carters walkoff
The Oilers have plenty of young prospects and Players that could interest any team. Briere could also be content with future picks. Nobody thought a team would take Barrie and his remaining term. But Tyson a 1st and one of Edmontons lesser prospects got Ekholm for 3.5 yrs with some salary retained. You have zero idea what could interest Briere.

I think the OILERS would pass on that one. That’s a pretty steep price to pay for a Konecny.

Barrie at least can help a team’s power play. He is a strong power player. Yamomato is just an under achiever. Briere isn’t going to want just future picks in every deal. He’s going to want young talent as well. The Oilers AHL team wasn’t very good this year & the Oilers prospect pool is rated in the lower half of the league. Also, the Oilers would have to move salary out to accomodate Konecy’s contract. Yamomato isn’t the type of player the Flyers would be interested in taking back. Yamomato isn’t Torterella type of player.

Now that is some funny stuff! Not based in reality, but amusing nonetheless! Well played.

What’s not based in reality? The Oilers prospect pool ranked 20 out of 32 teams. That is the bottom half of the NHL. Bakersfield wasn’t a high powered team like their parent club. Yamamoto had 25 points last season. That’s fewer than Nick Foligno and as many as Nic Dowd. Sorry, Yamamoto isn’t a valuable trade piece. The Flyers would probably have more interest in Warren Foegle than they would in Yamamoto.
Joe Carters walkoff
He only played 58 games to get those 25 points though. He has 118 points in 244 career games. Hes JUST 4 points off being a half a point per game player. Something he likely would have reached if he wasn’t still ailing from his injuries upon returning. And yes Bakersfield wasn’t great but they have plenty of prospects who could interest Briere in a trade. Holloway, Broberg, Bourgault, Tullio, Lavoie, Rodrigue, Savoie for starters.

The Oilers in fact don’t have much at all in terms of young prospects.

Yamamoto is a 4th liner.
Joe Carters walkoff
If Yamamoto is a 4th liner, then Koneckny is a 3rd liner. Lord your takes are idiotic. Hes a 3rd liner who can move up. How many 4th liners had 25 points in 58 games in an injury riddled season this year. 25pts in 58 games would make him the best damn 4th liner in the league
Joe Carters walkoff
Wilf you need to retire. From EVERYTHING

Jost is a 1 million, 1 year at best, As for the Oilers let’s start with there clueless GM, And then move on to goaltending, And then the blueline, This club won’t be in the hardware mix until they free up cash by trading Draisaitl. Your Welcome!!!!!!!
Gbear
Okay, that may be the worst idea ever.
User 318310488
It’s the only way out of the cap mess there in.
Grocery stick
Not too familiar with Tyson Jost. Is he comparable to Copp? I’d think Copp-2yrs-ago had more offensive upside. Anyone watched Jost closer?
66TheNumberOfTheBest
EDM has elite forwards who always lose because they have a terrible D and no goaltending.
So obviously their priority should be Konecny.
