After being originally reported by Sportsnet’s Eric Engels last week, his colleague Elliotte Friedman confirmed the original report today on the 32 Thoughts podcast. Echoing the fact that the Canadiens and Dach are close to signing Dach to a four-year contract, he added that the team is likely working on other moves before making the deal official.
Cap implications aside, the team will likely need to trade a forward (or two) just to have space for Dach in the lineup. With the addition of Sean Monahan into the fold for next season, Dach will likely shift to wing. He has the most experience there out of Montreal’s five natural centers in their top 12 forwards. With Cole Caufield, Mike Hoffman, Josh Anderson, Jonathan Drouin, Evgenii Dadonov, and Brendan Gallagher all in the fold, there’s just not enough room in Montreal’s NHL lineup to have Dach play an appropriate role to continue developing. Cap implications are certainly a part of that, though, as a $3.5MM cap hit as surmised by Friedman and Engels would still put Montreal dangerously close to the salary cap even with Carey Price’s $10MM cap hit on long-term injured reserve.
- The San Jose Sharks are hosting this year’s 2022 Rookie Faceoff, a voluntary tournament for teams’ rookie camp rosters to get some game experience against each other. The Anaheim Ducks announced their participation today, noting that the Arizona Coyotes, Colorado Avalanche, Los Angeles Kings, and Vegas Golden Knights will also participate. The tournament will feature nine games in total across four days from September 16 through September 19. Anaheim has not lost a rookie tournament game in regulation since 2016, going 11-0-2 in the process.
- The Athletic’s Sean Shapiro reports that American coverage of the 2023 Stadium Series game will be on ESPN after TNT/Turner Sports hosted coverage last season. ESPN will broadcast the Carolina Hurricanes’ first-ever outdoor game as they host the Washington Capitals at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh on February 18, 2023. Shapiro also adds that the full slate of American national TV games is expected to come out later this week as the regular season approaches.

Ive been thinking habs trade drouin with 50% retained to NYR for reaves and lundkvist RD. Habs get a tough guy to protect the rookies and a young right d. Rangers get a. French guy to maybe pair with lafrenire, but either way have a 50+ point player added for the dman they cant use. Reaves makes the money work and is just a bonus for the habs. Thoughts?
Johnny Z
I don’t think NYR takes a chance on Drouin til he plays a few games. And the Frenchies need to trade sooner than that.
bruin4ever
Murphy, are you actually serious in thinking that the Rangers would take Drouin for both these guys? They wouldn’t make that trade if only one of the two guys are involved.
Mtl will have to add an asset to trade Drouin at this point.

I always liked Reaves, but you don’t need to trade anything to get him. He was terrible for New York last year. His possession numbers — which never were good — have nosedived, and the only guy in the NHL with worse rate metrics was his linemate Kevin Rooney. If he’s on the roster in October — and with Tyler Motte, for instance, still unsigned — that’d be dead embarrassing.
And c’mon, bruin4ever … Nils Lundqvist is a good prospect, but right now he’s not even on the NHL roster. If cap issues weren’t a problem, and if I’m the Rangers GM, and if Montreal’s freaking hitting the peyote too hard to think straight and asks for Reaves and Lundqvist for Drouin, I break my fingers texting HELL YES back. Drouin isn’t worth the money he’s making, but Reaves isn’t an NHL player any more and Lundqvist isn’t an NHL player yet.

Ducks since 2016 are 11-0-2. Hopefully that transitions to the big club in a year or two.

Carolina has a bunch of RD on their roster. Maybe the Hab can trade one of their better forwards for one of them.
Bear for Armia???
itsmeheyhi
Canes dont have room for another fwd.

Ugh. Same thing over at THN; everyone is absolutely, positively convinced that Kirby F’n Dach is the next Cam Neely. $3.5 AAV for a 4th line scorer, while proven scorers are lucky to get over a million?
Sillysundin
I dont know if you just spout off to hear yourself or you just really have no idea what youre talking about? Dach has all the tools to be a very good player being in a toxic environment like Chicago hurt him more than helped
Brent97 2
And thats the problem with the nhl currently. Players are being paid 4.5.6.7 mil a season on potential. And not based on what they have done.kirby has done f*ck all in the nhl so far. Yes his potential is there hes a former 3rd OA pick afterall. Toxic environment or not doesnt change the fact he has not produced playing on a team that has toews kane or debrincat. What makes people think he can go to the habs and produce on a team that currently have a 1 line scoring. Aside from 1st line suzuki/caufield theres no one on that team that shows 15 goal potential.
How about the nhl gm and owners start making their kids show they can produce before paying for “potential”

@ sillysundin — Let me clue you in on some basic facts about sports there, your highness:
* Strange though it must seem to you, a lot of high draft picks are busts. You ever hear of Petr Taticek? No? How about Hugh Jessiman? Lauri Tukonen? A.J. Thelen? Marek Zagrapan or Sasha Pokulok? Riku Helenius? Alex Plante? Zach Hamill? Scott Glennie? Joey Hishon? Mark McNeill? See, that’s not even running down a list in the last twenty years of draft busts. That’s running down the list in the last twenty years of high first round picks who NEVER PLAYED AS MANY AS 10 NHL GAMES.
* Here’s another list of guys who Had All The Tools: Cam Barker, Benoit Pouliot, Nail Yakupov, Griffin Reinhart, Michael Dal Colle, Olli Juolevi … all top-five picks who never did much of anything. You can even toss in the Alzners and Gudbransons of the world — guys who’ve been honorable journeymen, but sure as hell didn’t put up #3-in-the-draft numbers.
The moral of the story is this: until you’ve done it, you haven’t done it yet. I don’t give a damn what kind of “tools” a player has *if it doesn’t translate to performance on the ice.* Teams don’t win games by having the biggest guys on the ice or putting top-five picks in the lineup or by what kind of “tools” players have. Teams win games by putting pucks in the other guys’ net and stopping the other guys from returning the favor.
Now who knows? Maybe Dach *will* turn into a quality NHLer. Right now, he’s had two seasons-plus and regular shifts to show … not a whole lot. He isn’t scoring. He’s terrible at faceoffs even for a novice. He’s not yet more than a 4th liner.

Solid tantrum. A bit long winded, but solid.
Sillysundin
This comment just reiterates how little you know about hockey, dach’s contract will be a steal in 2 years he’s got so much skill
Nha Trang
(yawn) I know, I know, you have your mind made up, don’t confuse you with the facts. You just keep on gazing at your poster of Dach and fap along.
Sillysundin
Did you run upstairs and tell your mom “ look mom i can google “? You obviously dont watch much hockey so how about you keep your comments to who makar is dating and let the grown ups talk on ice hockey
DarkSide830
Who would win: Rookie Tournament Ducks or preseason Ravens?
Nha Trang
Heh. Are they playing on ice or on turf?
