10:10pm: Girard suffered a broken sternum on the play according to head coach Jared Bednar. He will miss the rest of the playoffs for Colorado.
8:10pm: The Colorado Avalanche have lost one of their defensemen, at least for the time being. After Samuel Girard was removed from tonight’s game against the St. Louis Blues, he has been taken to a local hospital for further evaluation on an upper-body injury.
Girard was hit hard by Ivan Barbashev behind his own net, and though he got off the ice on his own, will not return. The 24-year-old defenseman had averaged just under 21 minutes a night so far in the playoffs but lasted just 56 seconds in tonight’s match.
For their part, the Blues have also lost starting goaltender Jordan Binnington for the time being. The netminder left after a collision with Nazem Kadri, forcing Ville Husso back into the crease.
The two teams will play again on Monday evening.

Not a Kadri fan, but Rosen is the one who hit Binnington, not Kadri. Rosen and Kadri collided and Rosen hit Binnington.
jamesonbishop
He pushed Rosen into binnington.
ericl
I wouldn’t call it a push. Two guys went for a loose puck and Kadri had the better balance of the two in the collision. As a result, Rosen was sent into Binnington. Kadri has done a lot of stupid things in his career, but this one isn’t his fault. It’s just an unfortunate injury to Binnington
neo
ok don’t call it a push — would be more accurate to say he held, directed and slew footed the Blues’ dman into crashing through the goaltender with him
MoneyBallJustWorks
that’s a stretch, and I’m not kadri’s biggest fan.
neo
I get that he’s lunging at a loose puck but he goes aggressively as he can without any regard for the opponent. What would the game look like if every player charged the goaltender and crashed through him because he saw a puck that he wanted to score? If the league doesn’t protect the goaltenders from such uninhibited play, they will suffer goalie injuries time and again. A player who has been chastised so many times for recklessness putting himself in this event raises a lot of questions. Not entirely different from checking a guy to the head or boarding a player who is prone to significant injury. He’s a strong, aggressive player — if department of player safety can’t rein that in, what do they exist for?
neo
agreed, was just going hyperbolic in other direction

Look at his right hip.

I’m guessing you are a Blues fan… Leave your bias out of it. Both injuries were unfortunate, but neither the hit on Girard nor the collision into Bennington were dirty. Rosen should have defended that better. It’s playoff hockey, fast, play to the whistle. Kadri saw a rebound and did everything he was supposed to do, making a b-line for the net. Rosen coasted the last few strides b/c he was playing the puck when he should have been boxing out the man.
Useless player safety department I agree with, not in these circumstances though.
Say What Dawg?
Confirmation bias. Stop.

Why didn’t the blues challenge that offsides goal? Thought that was a near guarantee reversal. Maybe I wasn’t seeing it right
ericl
I thought it was offside as well. I’m guessing they didn’t challenge it because the puck was high in the air & it may have been difficult to tell where the puck actually crossed the line into the zone. Otherwise, I don’t get why you don’t challenge
Gbear
Broken sternum just sounds terribly painful. Ouch!
pawtucket
Agree. Poor guy. Hope he’s okay. Gonna miss maybe a cup run

Each team needs to carry four goalies cuz there’s no protection for keepers these days.

And get combat and hazardous duty pay!
The old rule of the crease being only allowed for goalies should probably come back if you want to really protect them!

Not a fan of either side, but Barbashev left his feet. I’d say a 3 to 5 game suspension is appropriate. Girard has been a Lady Byng finalist numerous times. If I’m Colorado, someone is definitely going to be targeted. If you can dish it out, you better be ready to take it.

I’ll have to watch it again, I didn’t see barb leave his feet.
As for the binnington play, kadri was moving from Jordan’s right and if it weren’t for Rosen, it looked like he would have crossed to the left side. He wasn’t directly charging the goalie. Berube and binnington are both whiny little children.
