The Boston Bruins are down two games in their first-round series against the Carolina Hurricanes, and now a pair of their players are down a few more dollars. Derek Forbort and Brad Marchand have both been issued $5,000 fines for actions in last night’s game.
Forbort’s incident came early in the third period when he rather recklessly swung his stick toward Teuvo Teravainen, hitting him directly in the face. It was given a four-minute double-minor from the on-ice officials, half of the eight minutes that Forbort would receive on the night in just 16 minutes of ice time. A key penalty killer for the Bruins, he’ll have to keep his stick in check, as a fine will lead the Department of Player Safety to keep a closer eye on his actions moving forward, and result in increased punishments for any further transgressions.
Marchand meanwhile is already under the watchful eye of the DoPS every time he steps on the ice. His fine stems from a slash on Hurricanes goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov after the two exchanged words in the second period. Both Marchand and Kochetkov were given penalties for slashing on the play, though it is Marchand who also receives the fine–likely due in part to his long history with the league’s supplementary discipline process.

Forbort hit Teravainen, not Aho. The hit left a large gash in Teravainen’s chin. It was more than reckless—it appeared to be intentional. He should have had a hearing before Player Safety and suspended for at least a game.

@Gavin – @raven88’s right there; it looks like Forbort wants to get that pesky horse fly off of Teravainen’s face. Talk about Rodeo Hockey!

Considering Marchand just was suspended for 6 gamed in February for punching and slashing Penguins goalie Tristan Jarry, he should have had a suspension for his 2 handed slash to Pyotr Kochetov. A fine was way to light for a repeat offender.
Otto371
He hit him in the chest under all his pads. Kochetkov slashed first and harder so a suspension here would be absolutely ridiculous. Retaliation fine sure, because of his history. But if you think he should be suspended for that I question your sanity.
Whalercane47
Kochetkov only slashed because marchand cross checked him first, maybe if the nhl cracked down more on contact to netminders these kinds of things wouldn’t happen.
doghockey
Just a suggestion but maybe hockey is too intimidating for you. Try a sport with less contact.

I am all for 80’s enforcement. F**k with a star player, and get beaten into the dirt. It worked well because it was amongst the players, and not biased refs.
SkidRowe
I’m of the opposite position. Goalies should be fair game if they handle the puck outside the crease.
afl forever
This league refuses to deal with repeat offenders.

Refs are killing the playoffs this. Let the boys play.

I read somewhere that Brindamour(sp?) was pissing and moaning about the B’s targeting their goalies. I’m a life long B’s fan, but didn’t the canes’ have a zamboni driver beat (most of what is currently) the leafs?
itsmeheyhi
How are those things related?
sovietcanuckistanian
as long as there’s a zamboni driver the canes’ will be fine

The Marchand/Kochetkov affair is a sissy fight compared to Pasternak’s assault on Ranta. The Bruin went out of his way to strike the goaltender in the head with his fist and stick deliberately creating an injury. Pasternak should be suspended for the rest of the playoffs.
SkidRowe
Are you serious? Pasternak is not a physical player and that was clearly unintentional.
