All signs point to Claude Giroux leaving the Philadelphia Flyers now that he has played in his 1,000th game, though there is still at least a bit of intrigue in regards to where he is going. Anthony SanFilippo of Crossing Broad reported last night that Giroux would not be accompanying the Flyers on their trip to Ottawa, something that Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet confirmed this morning.
The sharp money is on the Florida Panthers right now in terms of who will acquire Giroux before Monday’s deadline, though Friedman writes that the Colorado Avalanche have “not given up” as of this morning. Emily Kaplan of ESPN writes that there could be another team involved, though she too expects it to be Florida when the dust settles.
Florida of course already acquired Ben Chiarot, moved out Frank Vatrano, and have held Owen Tippett out of the AHL lineup in advance of the deadline as they attempt to go all-in this season. The Panthers are among the league’s best teams, even if they did get beaten by the struggling Vegas Golden Knights last night. Overall, Florida has a 41-14-6 record and is still in first place in the Atlantic Division.
If it is the end of Giroux’s time in Philadelphia–Friedman tweets that the captain will be held out of the lineup through the weekend even if a trade isn’t completed today–he finishes with exactly 1,000 games and 900 points with the franchise. This season has been another strong one with 18 goals and 42 points in 57 games, even if the overall results for the Flyers haven’t been what was expected. The 34-year-old is an unrestricted free agent in the summer and has yet to raise the Stanley Cup.

The wrong teams are after Giroux.
Can anyone name the last time a top team without an obvious hole (Avs and Panthers have great top sixes already clicking) traded for an established star player (face of his franchise for a decade) who is used to a high level of touches and quality ice time and properly integrated them (without disrupting existing chemistry) into a team that won a Cup?
These moves look good on paper and work in NHL 22 or whatever, but…

Tampa Bay wins their third consecutive Cup. and we all jump off a bridge.

I tend to agree. Not to mention Giroux has had basically one standout playoff performance (2012), and that was a decade ago. So it’s not like he’s a lock to magically morph into a playoff savior for a team that isn’t familiar with being there.

You may jump first, LOL

The last time he played with high end talent. Yawn

Ray Bourque says hi!

Rangers. Steve Larmer.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
So, FTR, the examples are from 2000 and 1994.
Bourque filled a role. Avs D outside of Ozolinsh and Foote wasn’t especially good.
Larmer also filled a role since the Rangers moved out so many players (Weight, Amonte, etc.)
I’m talking about what the Avs or Panthers would be doing here. Adding an established star ON TOP of their existing group.
The classic example for Pens fans is Iginla. We didn’t need him, but he was good and we were good, so why not, right? Messed everything up.
DigbyGuy
Also Bourque and the Avs didn’t win the year he came over. They won the next year after he played a full season.

Best I got is LA with Gaborik in 2014, but wasn’t quite the CBJ legend. It’s the small pickups that tend to put teams over the top – Hainsey, Kempny, Timonen, etc.

Star on top of stars. Ok.
Messier, Graves, Anderson, Kovalev, Leetch, Zubov, Richter, Olczyk, Tikkanen…
3Rivers
Outside shot that Hextall brings his former player to Pittsburgh to play on the 3rd or 4th line?
Also just curious, can Giroux play with wing?
Jimmykinglive
He played wing the last few seasons but I don’t think he’d accept a trade to Pittsburgh

3Rivers
Lol yeah didn’t think of that

You and me both.
Bucky76
I’m just wondering could a three teen trade be possible with Florida Philadelphia and possibly Vancouver where of course Giroux ends up in Florida Owen Tippett and draft choices ends up in Philadelphia then Philadelphia trades Owen Tippett and a defenseman to Vancouver then JT Miller ends up in Philadelphia just a thought:))
junkmale
If the defenseman that ends up in Vancouver is Provorov, sign me up.
Bucky76
That could be a good defenseman just putting it out there
DarkSide830
not sure the Flyers do that unless they know they can clear out cap space for an extention down the line.
admiral hopppaaa
I don’t think that Miller makes sense for Philly right now and they’re certainly not giving up Provorov to get him. They’d be better suited to retool next year and try for Miller as a UFA
Black Ace57
I’m sorry, Tippett and a 2nd is not enough of a package for Giroux considering what they gave up for Chiarot.
DarkSide830
Who is saying that’s what’s gonna happen? Maybe if they don’t eat money, but they will [have to] so it’s going to be a 1st plus.
Black Ace57
They don’t have a first in 2022 or 2023
Bucky76
He is traded to Florida
