We’re now almost two months into the NHL season and plenty has happened in recent weeks. The Montreal Canadiens have completely new front office leadership, Jack Eichel finally found his way out of Buffalo and things are going off the rails in Vancouver. Big names like Evander Kane and Matt Murray have cleared waivers in recent days, while the COVID situation around the league continues to throw doubt on the upcoming Olympic participation.
With all that in mind, it’s time to run another edition of the PHR Mailbag. If you missed the last one, it was broken into two parts. In the first, our Brian La Rose examined the slow start in Seattle, gave his Golden Knights thoughts pre-Eichel trade, and discussed Marc-Andre Fleury’s play in Chicago. The second part touched on Filip Hronek’s place in Detroit, Tomas Hertl’s pending free agency, and listed a few potential fantasy keepers that have yet to make an impact at the NHL level.
You can submit a question by using #PHRMailbag on Twitter or by leaving a comment down below. The mailbag will run on the weekend and answer as many questions as possible.

It seems like the most consistent part of the Flyers the last 3-5 years has been their inconsistency. With the injuries to older big salary players and the young guns still not stepping up to what was expected, will this just be another season of mediocrity?

Question – Has the NHL ever had a publicly owned franchise similar to the NFL’s Green Bay Packers? If not, do NHL rules prohibit a publicly held non-profit corporation from owning a team? I ask the question because it seems to me that many NHL franchises would have a better chance of stability and success with a different ownership structure.
Black Ace57
Wow, that’s actually a great question. Now I’m wondering about basketball and baseball too.

The NBA bylaws don’t prohibit it; a while back (20+ years?) the Boston Celtics offered single shares of non-voting stock to the public, and a bunch of fans snapped them up, more or less to be able to say that they were part-owners of the team. I know that the CFL allows it … and just looking it up, the Saskatchewan Roughriders have a setup like the Packers. The Toledo and Rochester AAA baseball teams and some major junior teams are community-owned as well.

Thank you for the answer!

I guess my question was half asked already, but just plain and simple, what should the Flyers do? Is sacking AV and seeing if the new coach can spark the team a good start?
SkidRowe
We don’t have time for any half-asked questions. lol
DarkSide830
well then, at least it’s good that I provided the other half!

Dear PHRM Crystal Ball, As you know by now, I’m always looking to be one step ahead in my 12-team Keeper League, ergo I pose these Q’s:
1. Of the following, please rank & project which has the quicker/brighter scoring future, with goals ranked ahead of assists: Matt Beniers, Adam Beckman, Cole Perfetti & Jack Dugan.
2. Same as above for Rasmus Sandin & Calen Addison.
Thanks – and Merry Christmas!
The Duke.

Why doesn’t the NHL require mouth guards for forwards and defensemen?
Also is there anyway for the Sharks to get rid of Evander Kane without owing him his full salary?

Seems there is less NHL on tv under the new contract. TNT games are at 10 pm EST and most ESPN games are on ESPN+/Hulu. Will that continue all year?

if you have satellite and purchase the NHL Center Ice Package on Dish, for me $16 per month added to the package you choose , they have the main channel NHL Network that shows games every night , and each of 32 teams has a channel , then some have2+ HD Channels also , plenty of Hockey , NBCSP also shows games

How does one put out the Canadian tire-fires that are the Canucks, Canadians, Sens, and even recently the Jets?

JT Miller to the Bruins. What would it take?

Why is mike Sullivan not in the running for coach of the year.
riverrat55
DeBrusk , a 3rd round pick, future considerations option better yet , maybe throw in Ullmark instead , Swayman as have seen few Bruins games looked good , if Rask is healthy and play to his past ability , would be a great teacher for Swayman to remain with team instead of minors

Who would you see as some of the biggest players traded at the trade deadline
FearTheWilson
Whats with the Jets? Year after year they ice a highly talented team yet other than a trip to the WCF they haven’t had much success. Is it finally time to part ways with Paul Maurice?

I have a question. Let’s say a team trades a player and retains 50% of the salary. Can the team that acquires that player then trade him somewhere else and also retain another 50%? Basically, if a team A trades a player with $10M contract to team B and retains 50%, can team B retain another $2.5M and trade him to team C?
