Boston Bruins Sign Zach Senyshyn

September 20, 2021 at 12:15 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 9 Comments

The Boston Bruins have reached an agreement with their final restricted free agent, signing Zach Senyshyn to a one-year, two-way deal. The contract will carry an NHL salary of $750K. Of note, the young forward will be 25 at its expiry, meaning he could become a Group VI unrestricted free agent if he fails to land a regular spot in the Bruins lineup this season.

Now 24, Senyshyn was the 15th overall pick in 2015, the last of the infamous three consecutive picks the Bruins held. Jakub Zboril, Jake DeBrusk and Senyshyn have combined for just 146 NHL points, while each of the three picks that followed–Mathew Barzal, Kyle Connor, and Thomas Chabot, have eclipsed 150.

He’ll never escape that label, and in Senyshyn’s case, it is deserved. The winger hasn’t even had a ton of success at the minor league level, reaching a career-high of 26 points in 2017-18 with the Providence Bruins. His per-game production did take a jump in 2020-21 with seven goals and 13 points in just 18 AHL games, but he still seems very far from making an impact at the NHL level.

In 14 career games with Boston, Senyshyn has just one goal and three points. To be sent to the minor leagues this season he would need to clear waivers, but that wasn’t a problem at the beginning of 2020-21. He passed through in January without a claim.

I mean how does one have 3 first round selections and botch each one I mean the odds are literally stacked against you. It’s like they were trying to fail.

I was thinking there must be a reason to go for those three so I looked at ten rankings from before that draft.
Barzal was ranked at an average of 9
      Connor-11
      Chabot-19
      Zboril-23
      DeBrusk-24
      Senyshyn-40
I don’t know what they were thinking

they do deservse a pass for Zboril . Most people had him going in that area of the draft. Debrusk was a maybe late first rounder .Sensyshyn.second round at best. . The problem was barzal @ connor both fell from where people thought they would go. Barzal had some injury worries but three picks you had to gamble one on him .

And to be fair Zboril is looking like he’s going to be a very sturdy solid shutdown guy. Not a waste. He’s still fairly young. Debris showed flashes of huge potential and now can’t seem to put it back together. Senyshyn I mean yeah no excuse Sweeney.

The Bruins have been in the playoffs each of the last fives seasons. One year they lost in the Cup finals. Another year they had the best record in the East. Two of the years they finished second in the East. The other two they were third. Yes they didn’t have a very good draft in 2015. But it has tt stopped them from being one of the best and most consistent franchises in the game. Enough already with the 2015 draft. The picks were in the middle of round one. It is not like they had three top ten picks. Picks in the middle of round one often bomb out. The ones the Bruins took at least have had a modest degree of success.
