Is the rule that if they sign a UFA prior to the expansion draft it counts as their pick from the team that the player most recently played for?
I suppose it helps even the playing field since they get first shot at UFAs, I just hadn’t realized that was a stipulation before.
Yes, if they sign a player from a team during that exclusive negotiating period, he becomes their choice from the team he is still technically under contract with (player contracts run through July 27 this season).
They could, in theory, agree to a contract with a pending free agent and not sign it until the 28th, allowing them to still select someone from the team through expansion, though that would risk the player changing his mind and going elsewhere and also remove Seattle’s ability to give out an eight-year deal.
