July 23: Tony DeAngelo is expected to be placed on unconditional waivers today for the purpose of a contract buyout by the New York Rangers, according to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff and Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic. Unlike players with no-movement clauses like Zach Parise, Ryan Suter and Keith Yandle, DeAngelo will have to wait a day for his buyout to become official. Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports that Lean Bergmann from the San Jose Sharks is also on waivers. A Bergman buyout would cost the Sharks just $142,917 in 2021-22 and $138,750 in 2022-23, but actually doesn’t make much sense. He could also be on unconditional waivers for the purpose of a mutual termination of the final year of his entry-level contract, which would result in no cap penalty for the Sharks. Either way, Bergmann will also become an unrestricted free agent tomorrow.
Because he is still just 25 years old, the Rangers will be on the hook for just one-third of his remaining salary. That means the team will incur a cap penalty of $383,334 for the 2021-22 season and $883,334 for 2022-23.
It’s a rather small price to pay for the Rangers, though obviously it would have been much better if this situation never happened in the first place. The young defenseman scored 53 points in 68 games during the 2019-20 season, establishing himself as one of the best offensive defensemen in the league. A series of run-ins with teammates eventually broke the trust between player and organization, leading to his dismissal from the club for the majority of 2020-21.
A buyout was always the eventual outcome, though the Rangers took the time they had to make sure it was the only conclusion worth pursuing. Other teams could have had DeAngelo for a fraction of his on-ice worth, but obviously no one wanted the public relations headache that came along with it—or at least not while he still carried a $4.8MM cap hit.
Once bought out, DeAngelo will become an unrestricted free agent allowed to sign with any team.

News alert, TDA is not the innocent victim. TDA has a reputation for a reason and it’s not based on one isolated incident. He has been doing this stuff forever, he was suspended multiple times in the OHL for violating the harassment, abuse and diversity policy. He has been suspended multiple times for abuse of officials. Yep, multiple times. Check his player record. In 2013-2014, TDA violated the OHL’s Harassment and Abuse/Diversity Policy twice. The 2nd time resulted in his removal from the ice in the middle of the 2nd period on 1/31/2014 against Guelph and an eventual 8 game suspension. TDA was also dinged twice in the OHL for “abuse of an official”. The first offense resulted in a 2-game suspension and the 2nd was the last game of the season (he was ejected in the 3rd period of that game against Erie). Tampa made the ill-advised decision to waste a 1st Round pick on TDA in 2014. In 2015, TDA was ejected from another game (against Albany) for “abuse of official”. TDA was a healthy scratch for 8 games, rumored to be for behavioral issues and poor defensive play. Tampa parted ways with TDA in 2016 (he never played a single game at the NHL level for the Bolts), trading him to Arizona. On the 1st day of 2017, TDA was suspended 3 games for physical assault of a referee. TDA would be traded yet again to NYR in 2017… More behavioral issues. TDA is poison, especially to his own team. TDA has definitely had multiple “2nd chances”. “billysbballz”, defend him all you want but there is more to a player than offensive stats. Character matters and unfortunately that is something TDA is sorely lacking. He is also a proven defensive liability. No team he has played for has been successful.

I don’t know what goes on in NHL locker rooms, so I can’t comment on what type of teammate someone is. If DeAngelo is the right of center version of Sean Avery, then he won’t have many teams looking for his services. But I do get a kick out of the virtue signalers that break out their “Virtue Man” super hero costumes whenever an issue like this comes up. Surely the world will be saved by your virtue.
