UPDATE: TSN’s Pierre LeBrun is now reporting that the injury is to Price’s knee while the hip will also be assessed. Price will consult doctors next week, and LeBrun states that the hope is that the injury isn’t serious.
The saga of Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price has taken a variety of unexpected twists and turns over the weekend. After being left exposed with his no-movement clause waived, his future with Montreal suddenly became extremely uncertain. Now, Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reports that Price may miss significant time next season with a hip injury.
It complicates what’s already a very uncertain goalie selection process for the Seattle Kraken. General manager Ron Francis has a bevy of options to choose from. It’s been widely reported that the Kraken have immense interest in Florida Panthers netminder Chris Driedger, so the question of who his partner in the crease will be remains. While many suggest Price due to his legendary status, this news about his health may sway them otherwise. It’s a similar situation with Dallas Stars goalie Ben Bishop, who was left exposed but didn’t play a single game this season due to injury. Other potential options include Braden Holtby and Kaapo Kahkonen, among others, but Seattle has a tough choice ahead of them.
For Montreal, this could be a decently sized blow to their success next season. It’s softened a bit with the guarantee that Jake Allen will be back with the team next season. But despite posting better regular-season numbers than Price, the team won more with Carey in the crease. With no specific guidelines on how much time Price will miss, it’s extremely hard to project how this news could affect both Montreal and Seattle. Still, it’s certainly a development that shifts both their plans.
jdgoat
So he’s possibly injured, older, on a bad contract, and has regressed pretty bad in 3 out of the past 4 seasons. I feel like Bishop is the better gamble if they want to try and win right away.
Al Hirschen
Seattle should STILL pick him. Make him the face of the team. And his wife is from Washington
wreckage
How do you make a guy with 0 personality and on the injured list the face of your franchise?
Al Hirschen
He is the face of The Montreal Canadiens right now and Canadian hockey. He will be the face of Seattle hockey. And this rumors that are coming out about his injuries it sounds like Montreal is in damage control for all the heat they’re getting about putting Carey Price on the expansion list
wreckage
1. He is not the face of Canadian hockey. He may be the face of the Canadiens but not Canadian. And he is only the face of the Candiens by default. It was PK when he was a Hab.
2. These rumors are coming out from some pretty reputable sources. Seravalli and Lebrun aren’t really know for spreading false news.
Nha Trang
Oh for pity’s sake.
The “face of the franchise” is inevitably someone who’s an actual STAR. You know, someone who actually produces. It’s been years since Price has been above league average. And the huge contract — never mind the added $11 mm signing bonus he’s due this fall — would prevent Seattle from taking at least two useful skaters. Never mind that Price isn’t any more likely to be Seattle’s #1 goalie over Dreidger than Bobrovsky was in Florida last season.
If all Seattle is after is some marquee name, hell, they should go sign Wayne Gretzky or Ray Bourque to a contract. They’re both free agents, and likely they’d come cheaper than Price.
(Or, more realistically, go sign Landeskog. HE’d come cheaper than Price, and is still an elite player, and a leader, and a team captain.)
DarkSide830
he sure as heck produced right when they needed it this year. maybe “face” isnt the right word, but David Wright was still the face of the Mets when injured, and Udonis Haselem a fan favorite despite never playing. all you’re saying is he shouldn’t be picked because of semantics. that’s silly.
Nha Trang
No, I’m saying he shouldn’t be picked because he’s carrying the cap hit of a preeminent superstar, one that reduces any team’s ability to get more players, and he’s no better than average now, nor has been for years. And Montreal really needed Price to produce in the Cup Finals, when he let in 18 goals in 5 games.
One More JAGR
If I’m Francis, I’m taking Dreidger/Bishop/Kahkonen.
Gbear
Habs are doing a nice job of basically telling Seattle that Price and Weber are men barely alive and should be stayed away from at all costs! :D
dugdog83
You buying it?
Gbear
Nope. ;)
jdgoat
The thing is they’re probably better off moving forward if they are chosen.
djsnippets
I’m taking the 24 year old kahkonen from Minnesota 11 times out of 10
backhandinbaptist
I’m shocked Minnesota would protect cam talbot over Kahkonen…do they have to protect talbot due to a NMC? If not Billy G is going to have some splainen to do why he let the next starter in Minny go for nothing.
wreckage
No clauses for Talbot. He has 2 years left, Kahkonen has 1. Looks like Billy just preferred the veteran. Makes 0 sense.
DarkSide830
heck with it. Dreidger, Kaapo, Bishop, AND Price. one of the later two will probably be IR-able anyway.
IBackTheNats6
Except what do you do if both are injured or if both are healthy?
DarkSide830
well you’re not carrying 4 goalies anyway. the point would be to deal one of Kaapo, Bishop, or Price regardless, and if one of the three you keep isnt LTIR worthy you try and make another deal.
wreckage
Except both Bishop and Price have waived exclusively for the expansion draft, not beyond so you are stuck with both of them. Dreidger is reportedly asking for 3.5M and Kahkonen is likely similar. So roughly 23M tied up in Goalies and they do have to be cap compliant before game 1 of the season. No LTIR can be used in the offseason unless a player is believed to have to miss the entire season.
kscheer
I smell BS, burgerman is leaking this stuff so they don’t actually pick him.
sweetg
hope francis if he is all in on dreigder is not getting darling 2. At least he should another goalie who can play. Then i would pick someone who i can trade.even if i keep half salary like holtby/kahkonen/Vanecek. Young guy daccord of ottawa to have in minors.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I have them taking Dreiger, Kahkonen, Vanaceck (to trade) and Korenar.
When you see the whole puzzle they have to work with, Price is too much money and Bishop is too much risk and the guys above can do the job.
Also, glad to see people understand that Bergevin is just lying through his teeth to Francis. When you try to claim that ONE of your star players who just led you to the Cup Final is now crippled and unable to move and might not live through the month, OK, fine…players hide a lot of injuries in the playoffs, but…now Bergy is claiming all of his old stars are now deceased.

It’s a hefty contract to be sure, but I’m told the Seattle Kraken are taking a deep dive internally on whether or not to take Carey Price in the expansion draft. My guess is they don’t in the end, but I do think there’s a better chance of it than I first thought. Intriguing.”
Did Price’s hip and/or knee start hurting after he and Bergevin read this tweet?
Timing’s a bit suspect on this news.

FWIW, for those pondering the idea of Seattle selecting Price only to trade him back to Montréal, the Habs throwing picks/assets at Seattle for the Kraken to retain salary, etc: the NHL has informed both clubs that is a total no-go. League considers that a clear circumvention.”
So, Kucherov’s vacation is fine. Ladd being traded with picks for literally nothing is fine. But, this woke them up and now they are going to police the cap? Random.
DarkSide830
circumvention my you-know-what. for whatever reason, the league brought this cap hell on themselves, and are angry at the consequences. its no different then simply leaving an expensive contract exposed to create cap space, or making a trade to get an expensive player taken. call it cap-and-trade. this is why flat caps suck, imo. its much more exciting when there’s exceptions and technicalities.
riverrat55
Was just curious as why as you said Bergevin is lying through his teeth to Francis after investigation , and looking at Ron Francis’s career splits against Montreal who is GM of , impressive 130 games , 39 goals 88 assists 127 points , wander how much of that was when Bergevin was on the ice against him which ever team he was on , lol Marc trying to get even with him
bt
One question. If he needs surgery why did he not schedule it the day they lost? Seems like a smoke screen to me.
wreckage
Maybe he should have waited until 2 weeks before the new season to decide on surgery.
Nha Trang
I dunno, Bt … if it was me, and for the first time in my career, I was into the Cup Finals, and we LOST … well. Y’know something, I might have taken a few days before making medical decisions myself. Or, y’know, it might have taken him a few days to get that appointment. I’m pretty sure that in any event, I wouldn’t have put much thought into what dates or timeframes for my medical care best suited the prejudices of the fanbase.
Golfsucks
You know what Montreal can see in the future if Carey Price gets picked up?
MASSIVE CAP SPACE!
West coast goalie 5 injury prone years past his prime.
That’s why Montreal fans only love him sort of and won’t miss him that much.
After he retires he’ll still get a standing ovation befitting a goalie who never won a cup.
Montreal is pretty heartless when it comes to legacy.
Don’t get me wrong he is still the best goalie available in this draft and Seattle needs to burn some cap.
A. Judge
Seattle clearly won’t be taking Carey Price or Weber. Their contracts at this stage are a significant hindrance, particularly if you are a new franchise that will need a few years to really be competitive. They also have NMC contracts that would prevent flipping them to a contender. This is a win win for the Habs. My bet is Seattle take Brett Kulac, who is a very serviceable D man at a modest salary.
