Today concluded the 2021 NHL Draft, the first edition with 32 teams in the running. Some teams selected just three times (sorry, Toronto), while Don Waddell and the Carolina Hurricanes selected an NHL-record 13 times for a seven-round draft. After all the chaos of last night and today, catch up here on who your team selected and when.

Pumped to see Montreal’s 1st rounder knock some heads! Go Habs!!
kiwimlbfan
Okay boys in the Northern Hemisphere – how do you grade Vancouver’s draft (including the trades)?
dugdog83
“Good not great” – Dwight Schrute
Modified_6
I was really hoping for either Tyler Boucher or Chaz Lucious for the Stars’ first round pick. Chaz was still on the board at 15.
Here’s to hoping the extra picks end up being the right move!

Dallas seems to go with high floor and moderate ceiling guys in the first round. Dellandrea, Johnston, Dickinson. Dependable guys who may be top six players but will almost certainly be NHL players. Not sure I like the strategy you need some high end talent in the draft, though heiskanen is high end talent but it’s hard to miss at, what was he, #3?
Modified_6
Yeah he was 3rd overall.
I hate it sometimes, but regardless of what many say we’re a solid team that seems to look good in the playoffs. Like padnastikador alluded to, Nill seems to have great day twos in the draft. I sometimes would rather them trade up and lose picks and go after some more high end guys but it’s hard to argue with Nill’s track record.
padnastikador
Nill probably would’ve taken Johnston at 15 had Dallas not traded down. He has a history of reaching in the 1st round. At least this way Dallas added Grushnikov and Bar. Dallas had a really nice Day 2 of the NHL Draft.
Modified_6
I agree on both points.

Columbus did great. Waddell accumulates 13 picks in a week draft, LOL!
Gbear
Weak, not week. :/
dodger1958
13 What?
Gbear
13 draft picks (as the article states).

As for the Preds, I give them a B+. Like how they moved lower round picks to move up and get quality over quantity, but they may have played it a bit too safe on some picks as well.
DirtbagBlues
Pretty satisfied with Vegas’ draft. Dean seemed like a slight overdraft, but he looks like a pretty safe bet to become a reliable, productive player, so no complaints there. Chayka was a very nice addition. Really curious to learn more about Jakub Demek, sounds like VGK had him way higher on their board than anyone else.

And no doubt there’ll be half a hundred quips about Carolina obtaining Bobby Orr …

I HATE to say this…but the team that improved the most in the past week was the Flyers, hands down.
They paid a lot to do it, no doubt, but…in each case, they moved out a player and brought back a better player who fits them better to fill the spot.
And I REALLY hate to say this…but the team that declined the most in the past week (except for tankers like CBJ) was the Penguins.
The expensive market to move contracts at least explains why Hextall did what he did, but…he still made the wrong moves. He should have paid a sweetener to move Zucker and/or Pettersson (players we can easily replace) instead of giving away Tanev and McCann (players that are near impossible and much harder to replace, respectively).
Evidently, their big solution to all of our problems is…Darcy Kuemper. Get a microscope so you can watch the needle move.
Get MAF or go home. None of the others are more likely to succeed than Jarry.
Gbear
Have to agree that what Hextall did is head scratching. Almost seems like new GM’s want to clear out what their predecessor did (e.g. Waddell in Carolina).

The Hawks definitely reached with Allen at #32, there were others still on the board that would have been better choices on paper. Mark Kelley must have really seen something with him in the small sample size of the WJC. I hope that’s the case and, obviously, I also genuinely hope that this kid can exceed expectations. He will need to really work on his skating, but we did need more stay at home defencemen.
With the 62nd selection, C/LW Colton Dach could be a player to look forward to, as it would be really neat to see him playing alongside his elder brother, Kirby. From what I’ve read/seen, their games are pretty similar, but Colton is more of a shooter than his brother and he’s also more physical. This was a good pick and, it was a great deal better than the 1st. His ability to play either centre or left wing could be beneficial, with LW being better for him if his skating ability doesn’t improve enough.
Taking Taige Harding with the 91st overall pick, the Hawks got a mammoth rear-guard that can level opposing players. At 6’7″/236 lbs, the Scotsman (yes, he’s from Scotland) could form quite an imposing tandem in the near future with 2020 7th-rounder Louis Crevier, who is 6’8″/216 lbs. Again, skating ability is an issue here, but as a stay-at-home type of defenceman, that is less of an issue. He is also a scrappy player that will drop the gloves if need be, but with his size and strength, he probably won’t need to very often. He has a booming shot from the blue-line, which is something that we’ve definitely needed in the absence of Seabrook during his prime years.
At #105, another D-man, Ethan Del Mastro was selected. As has been the theme, he’s more of a stay-at-home type, but he is very good at closing gaps and breaking up rushes. His skating, especially in transition, needs work. However, if he can improve his stride and gain in that area, he could be a solid NHLer. He also won’t wow you on the score-sheet, but it’s to be expected for his playing style.
Just a few picks later, at #108, the Hawks picked C/LW Victor Stjernborg. At 5’11″/203 lbs, he’s the kind “fire hydrant” player that plays on the 3rd/4th line. He will be difficult to lodge off the puck, which he will defend fervently, which makes him effective for defensive-zone draws, as well as penalty-killing. He isn’t an offensive dynamo, but rather, a role-player like Marcus Kruger, that will do everything possible to keep the puck out of your own net. This is the kind of player that every team needs.
With pick #172, centreman Ilya Safonov is an interesting selection. During the WJC, he collided with Kirby Dach, breaking his wrist. Aside from that, he’s another size project (6’4″/205 lbs) who, based on video, is quite physical and will storm the net to score. As an overage pick (he’s 20), he could be a good power forward sooner than later. I worry about players selected out of Russia, because signing them away from the KHL can put teams to task. Fortunately, the 6th round is a good time to take chances.
With selection #204, the Hawks took RHD Connor Kelley.Per Elite Prospects, “Does anyone talk about him? Played #2. He takes good angles to seal off players. He’s fast. He blows up plays before they develop. Is playing a role this year, has been an offensive defenseman every step of the way before the NTDP.” Based on that, he looks to have some skills on either side of the puck. Having plus speed is a nice attribute compared to what the Hawks have gone for defensively in this draft. Statistically, his numbers don’t reflect “offensive defenceman” level production to me, but I guess we will see.
With their final pick at #216, LW Jalen Luypen was taken. Luypen is the kind of player that you take a chance on, having blown up this past season, scoring 16g and 13a in 23 games of WHL action. From what I saw in video, he’s energetic, fearless, and has speed to burn. He’s not afraid to drop the gloves either. It will be interesting to see whether his skillset can translate to the upper echelons, but I like what I’m seeing thus far.
