It may not be a Tuesday in October, but it isn’t the fourth Friday in June either. The 2021 NHL Entry Draft will again be a unique event and it is about far more than just the date. With the COVID-19 pandemic restricting many draft-eligible prospects from competing in full seasons and in some cases at all, as well as limiting NHL scouts from live viewings, this is set to be a very unpredictable draft. While the class is not especially strong at the top, it is deep and teams could have very different opinions on top players based on their incomplete profiles. Some players expected to go early could fall, even by a round or two, while others taken with top picks could come as complete surprises. On top of that, the draft class has also expanded by seven picks, one per round for the NHL’s newest addition, the Seattle Kraken expansion franchise. Beginning on Friday night and through Saturday afternoon, 223 NHL hopefuls will hear their names called. Perhaps more than ever though, it is hard to predict where each of those 223 may fall.

all our picks belong to BUF now. rip.

Francis trades the #2 pick for Mathew Barnaby, a box of rocks and the California Seals 7th round pick in 2035

Welcome to chaos incarnate, Matty!

It’s the Wolverine draft!

Scouting off of 30 seconds of video has it’s limitations, but…why did Beniers go above this Mason McTavish? McTavish seems to have a lethal shot and a nose for the net.
Gbear
If you watched Beniers at the WJC, you’d know why.
padresfan111323
I’m just guessing but it’s probably because the experts making the pick thought he was the better prospect.
junkmale
Luke and Jack playing together. This would be the point in my Canucks FHM7 where I acquired both of them to play with Quinn.
Gbear
Three of the top 6 picks all from the same program?! :0
Placing bets on the Wolverine winning the Frozen Four next year. :)
Gbear
Make 3 out of the top 5!
Jimmykinglive
Ottawa couldn’t have traded back or traded up from 39 for this kid?
wreckage
My thoughts too. That’s a reach.
Gbear
Lots of good forwards on the board when the Preds make their pick…….and I fear they’ll go D. :/
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Yzerman’s drafting an NBA team tonight. Big defenseman in front of a giant goalie is a solid formula.
TheRickestRick
He did the same thing in Tampa Bay.
MoneyBallJustWorks
pretty clear the impact not having a real season in the CHL had this year on the draft.
Gbear
Wow, Poile picked a skilled forward! :0
Good pick.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Poile (and/or his scouts) are at the top of his (their) game and have been for years.
When the Pens made the Ryan Reaves deal and gave up our first round pick that year, it was announced around the 28th or 29th pick and Eeli Tolvanen was still on the board, I was livid. Then Poile took him one spot before our pick and I no longer cared about trading the pick.
Last year, when people were mad about us trading our #15 pick for “a third liner” in Kapanen, the only way I would have cared would have been if Askarov was still on the board. Once again, Poile.
Gbear
Yet Poile has been a NHL GM for over 30 years and has one Cup final appearence to his credit. And the one constant is: they can’t score enough goals.
But I did like the Tolvanen pick. Fell right into their laps.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
This L’Hereaux kid needs a cross check to the teeth, though.
Gbear
I’m in shock that Poile took two forwards in the 1st round. Not sure I can handle this new direction, LOL!
Kid appears to be a pain in the arse to play against.
Bloodbath
Oilers blow my mind by not taking Jesper Wally LOL
66TheNumberOfTheBest
OMG…the Oilers really do have the worst GM in the league.
At first, I misread the trade and thought EDM traded up and I thought “wow, the Oilers are FINALLY going to solve their goaltending issues, I can’t believe it…” but….no…no…instead they solve Minnesotas.
Unreal.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Well, at least they drafted for their biggest need…a center to play behind McDavid, Draisital and sometimes RNH. Unreal.
The Mistake of Giving Eugene Melnyk a Liver Transplant
You have to have a Right handed Center! This was a great move by Edmonton! Hahahahhaha, no but for real WORST GM IN THE NHL!
wreckage
Oilers have 3 goalies with potential in the system in Konovalov, Rodrigue, and Skinner. A goalie wasn’t a need.
The pick is actually a need in their system. A right shot shooting forward. This is one time Kenny didn’t completely botch it.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I’m a fan of big goalies with pedigree. The Vasilevski model.
backhandinbaptist
What pedigree does Wallstedt have just being drafted over a guy like Konovalev who has been darn near lights out in the KHL the last 2 years? I don’t think Ken Holland is a good GM anymore after this year, but I was really hoping we weren’t going to take a goalie and I’m glad we didn’t. McDavid will be gone by the time he would get to the NHL anyways!
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I’ll take one Spencer Knight or Askarov over crossing my fingers over a pile of Nedeljkovics. The track record of recent first round goalies is strong.
backhandinbaptist
Ok but that doesn’t answer the question regarding pedigree. Draft pedigree? Maybe but that doesn’t mean much. I agree I think drafting in general has gotten better, but there are still duds every year in the first round and goalies have the highest percentage of being duds because they are a lot harder to tell. I can understand your opinion, but I disagree in the Oilers case that they were dumb for not taking a goalie in the first round.
M34
This isn’t the NFL people. You don’t draft for need thinking that you will have 3 rookies step in and make impacts for this season and many to come. The nhl draft is about taking players who you believe could have long term impacts, even if it means trading them later on down the road. The immediate roster needs are better filled through free agency. The nhl also has much higher bust potential, so taking a flier on a kid who has shown flashes makes a lot of sense.
It cracks me up that everyone critiques each pick so much.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Exactly. The only thing people in comment sections should say is “well, the professionals must know more than we do. We’ll quietly twiddle our thumbs until we see what happens” as opinions have no place in sports.
smytds
I smell sarcasm?
M34 has a point – we’re not scouting these players relentlessly as if our jobs depended on it – so let’s reserve judgment?
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Exactly. Just like…since I don’t have a record deal I never decide which songs I like or which songs I don’t like.
If that makes sports fun for you, more power to you. No sale.
Gbear
What would you like us to do, share cooking recipes?
Fan is short for fanatic. Hence the passion we have when our team makes a pick.

I have a fantastic Herb& Parmesan Roasted Acorn Squash for you all…

There really is alot you can do with acorn squash. Very underrated dish. :D
The Mistake of Giving Eugene Melnyk a Liver Transplant
@Gbear, I am curious and would like to subscribe to your food blog!
M34
Take it easy there @forwhomjoshbelltolled, I never once discouraged opinions. All I said is that I find it comical that so many picks are critiqued based on a players position versus team need, when most of these guys won’t play in the NHL for a few years (if ever), and we really have no idea what any given teams true needs are going to be at said time.
In fact, I enjoy other people’s opinions. That’s why I read them.
Gbear
I’m going to set up a side blog here at PHR for food talk. Watch out, Gavin, it might take over the site! :D
66TheNumberOfTheBest
FTR, I take everything easy* but I’ve noticed this “people on comment boards shouldn’t comment” nonsense a lot in the past week or so, so I made my opposing opinion clear here. General statement.
*Except when I see a player wearing 66*, then I legitimately do want to see them Bertuzzi’d. Right or wrong, I do not take that easy.
*In a pro or high level league, rec league players do not need beaten for this. I can meet half way there.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Evidently, you indeed cannot opt out of the draft.
Gbear
Now that is funny! :D
Maybe the kid did that to make sure only Montreal picked him. Pretty clever if he did!
asuchrisc
Well… what should be a night that focuses on the accomplishment of these young guys now will be focused on the 31st overall pick and the organization that drafted him.
jdgoat
Montreal could’ve just taken him next year and preached forgiveness and growth if he actually was sorry. What a terrible look PR wise. Bergevin is such a clown in multiple ways.
wreckage
Montreal screwed up big time. I hope the kid refuses to sign with them.
backhandinbaptist
I love the pick.screw cancel culture, screw the self-righteous clowns that judge every wrong move of every one of these teenagers. Mad respect for MB.The kid apologized, seemed genuinely sorry and backed it up by throwing himself under the bus for the draft this year.
jdgoat
Agreed. The kid made an awful mistake, but this just brings him even further into the light. It seems like he was ready to accept that he needed to pay some sort of consequence for his actions. He renounced his damn rights. How hard is it to defer this pick to next year and save yourself the embarrassment? I sincerely hope that the kid can do something of actual consequence to show he is changed and instead people drag the organization through the mud for trying to take advantage of a market inefficiency.
jdgoat
Awful, awful reasoning man
Gbear
Amen to that, backhandinbaptist!
wreckage
Clearly Bergevin learned something during his time in Chicago.
backhandinbaptist
So JD, what would you like him to do to prove how sorry he is? He publicly renounced himself from the draft. Should he get down before all the hockey world and grovel? Should he start a charity? Anyone can do anything insincerely. How long does he have to not make this mistake for you to say “oh he’s changed”? The only tell whether he is sincere is time and a year is not a lot of time to determine a true change in character. If he keeps doing shenanigans as he has then clearly he wasn’t sincere. If he now lives in an upright manner and conducts himself rightly then clearly he has changed. But a year does not guarantee anything. In a way I agree, maybe see how his behaviour is for the next year. But now he has the backing of a wealthy hockey club to help him along who are invested in making sure this pick wasn’t a waste.
jdgoat
I’m a strong believer that actions need consequences. I do really hope that this kid can move forward, accept his mistake, and hopefully become a better person in the future. To applaud an organization for picking a player who publicly renounced his willingness to want to be drafted because he committed at worst a sex crime or at best breached somebodies privacy is something I just can’t respect.
DarkSide830
yeah, sounds like an overcorrection.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Perhaps I am taking the term too literally and it’s not the most important thing, but Mailloux was charged with invasion of privacy (OK, that sounds like a very accurate description of his actions) and…defamation.
I don’t understand that.
Assuming (perhaps this is the mistake) that, as it is here in the US, that truth is the only defense needed against a defamation charge, I don’t see how that is possible.
Is it illegal there to sully a girl’s reputation, even if true?
backhandinbaptist
True, but he was charged. I can’t call this a sex crime. That’s far too sinister for sending a naked picture of a girl to his buddies which is more than likely what it was. Of course our click-bait media says he “distributed” these things like he was some kind of cocaine juggernaut. He got charge, has been publicly embarrassed. I don’t think he ran from his legal issues, what more consequences need to be applied? He didn’t rape this woman, he didn’t beat her up. You know how many people send nudes of people to their friends? Like we gotta call a spade a spade here. A sex crime is not the appropriate label. A sex crime is rape, voyuerism, any sort of sexual activity with a child etc. Not sending a photo without consent. This happens frequently to celebrities.
urban schocker
She was naked, passed out and took a photo with his Johnson down her pie hole. Then he shared it. Childish, stupid, cruel to the young lady and he was convicted of the minor crime. Get him a mentor and move forward with hockey. He did not assault, rape or kill her. Just an immature teenage boy, hockey player, sheltered.
backhandinbaptist
She was passed out? Is that confirmed? I am actually asking. If that’s true and he not only sent the pictures but took them without consent that changes my mind significantly on the pick. That’s a lot closer to voyeurism than just sending a pic she gave consent to take. That is cruel to the girl. I apologize I didn’t have more facts. I still think the kid is on the right track with his comments and facing the charges like a man, but I do agree if she didn’t know he took those that’s not okay. Just feels more predatory.

I found one report with more details this morning. It said nothing about her being passed out. In fact, the details it gives makes that seem unlikely. Which is true, I do not know, but…this was the most detailed accounting from a reporter I have seen so far.
According to this report, he took a picture of her…with her head near his midsection…that showed her hair and the bra strap on her back but not her face. It’s unlikely that she knew he took pics. He then showed this picture to teammates on the team bus. He THEN showed off her profile page which had her name and face.

Ok so it sounds like your story has more facts. To know which is true we probably won’t. At best it was an immature act by a giddy teenager, at worst it leans more predatory. Thank you everyone for your input and actually having a respectful discussion. I don’t really know how to feel at the moment and in hindsight I would just shut my mouth about the pick until I had more facts.

What’s happened to Montreal? Used to be a classy organization. Bergevin is a sleaze.
DarkSide830
erm, Montreal?
DarkSide830
another Doan in the desert!

Was hoping Raty would drop to the Pens at #58.

Broz ranked #43 by McKenzie, so this looks like a good value pick at #58.

Little scary when the NHL Network doesn’t even have video of your second round pick. Lawton liked him.

IMHO, the Ducks just got the value pick of the draft with Sasha Pastujov. Can’t believe he fell to the 3rd round.

Best name of the draft, Cameron Whynot! :D
Why not take Whynot? :)

I see your Whynot and raise you a William Von Barnekow Lofberg.

That’s good, but I still have Red Savage in my deck of cards. :D

Dylan Duke drops to the fourth round…of course Tampa Snags him. Here’s another stolen gem!

Vancouver’s later round selections were pretty, pretty good.
