Red Wings center Luke Glendening is no stranger to being involved in trade deadline speculation. Veteran role players like him are always in demand at this time of year but no move ever came to fruition. However, now that he’s in the final year of his contract and Detroit already way out of playoff contention, this feels like a case of when and not if he’s dealt and there should be quite a few suitors for his services.
One of those suitors is Montreal, reports Sportsnet’s Eric Engels. The Canadiens have struggled at the faceoff dot this season and Glendening is the best in the league among qualifying centers in that regard, winning 65.7 of his draws which is well above his career 55% average. He also leads all Detroit forwards in shorthanded ice time per game and the Canadiens find their penalty kill in the bottom ten in the league.
While the 31-year-old isn’t known for his offensive contributions, he has already equalled his point production from last season with three goals and six assists through 27 games; his 0.33 point per game average is also a career best.
As is the case with many teams that are looking to buy, the salary cap will be a challenge. While Glendening’s cap hit of $1.8MM isn’t particularly exorbitant, it’s more than they can afford right now. Detroit could retain up to half of that to make a deal more affordable but that would only up the asking price. Of course, there is also the two-week quarantine period to consider from Montreal’s perspective (or any other Canadian-based team interested in acquiring him).
As things stand, it may not be a trade deadline that sees plenty of top-end talent changing hands with role players that are more affordable on the cap becoming a higher priority. For the Red Wings, they hold one of the more interesting ones in Glendening and Montreal certainly won’t be the only team calling about him in the coming weeks.

Arturri Lekhonen makes 2.4 mil and is a pending RFA. He would seem to be a good cap-saving candidate to swap for Glendening, who would be an upgrade to Jake Evans as 4C and on the PK.

Would make a ton of sense

Brandon Tanev just got a 5 minute major because Jarred Tinordi can’t skate. Total BS. Ridiculous such a bad call could stand up to replay.
Dunno who the ref was, but hopefully they find their way to the AHL soon. Couldn’t admit their mistake.

By definition that hit was boarding. It could’ve went either way. If that happened to Sid or Malkin I’m sure you would’ve had a different opinion
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Were Sid and/or Geno 12-15 feet from the boards and tripped over their own feet on the way down after being hit cleanly by someone barely half their size?
I am sure I would not.
bross16
He hit him in a vulnerable position which caused him to go violently into the boards. That’s boarding and I think a 5 was fair. It also could’ve been a 2 but that’s not up to me

Tinordi laid a big hit on Malkin that injured him. Malkin was MUCH closer to the boards at the time of the hit.
So because Malkin has balance it’s not a penalty, but because Tinordi has lousy balance and is a poor skater, it is a penalty?
The hit was clean, shoulder to chest.
The hit was timely, not late.
The hit took place closer to the faceoff circle than the boards.
Tanev got a major (and possibly cost us the game) because Tinordi is a top heavy doof who can’t skate. That’s what happened.
PS- Tanev is half his size. If Tinordi were paying attention and ready for the hit as any hockey player should be, the hit should have barely nudged him.
bross16
You can’t throw guys violently in to the boards just because. Tinordi was in a vulnerable position a few feet away from the boards and finishing a dump in. Tanev could have definitely let up knowing that. He didn’t and it cost them. I know it’s your favourite and you don’t like that he got kicked out but throwing a guy who has all his weight on one leg into the boards violently isn’t allowed

That’s twice you stated he is half his size. So he’s 3 feet tall and weighs 100 pounds?
bross16
He skated full tilt from the other side of the ice and barely let up before the hit. Either way it was a penalty
Darryl Rose
I just watched a video of the hit. Wow it’s a joke that was called a penalty. It was clean hit shoulder to shoulder. And he most certainly didn’t take a run at him from a distance. It’s a hockey check.
Darryl Rose
Well you also said he was half his size so without seeing the play I’ll assume he actually skated from 3 feet away.
Darryl Rose
I should have added …

Great at faceoffs is an understatement.
