Earlier today, reports surfaced that Tampa Bay wasn’t the only team that had a player test positive for COVID-19. It appears that is indeed the case as Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun reports that Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews has tested positive for the virus and has gone into quarantine at his home in Arizona. The team later released the following statement:
Per the National Hockey League protocol with respect to COVID-19, the Toronto Maple Leafs will not be commenting on reports surrounds testing for any of the club’s players or staff. A person’s medical information in this regard is private. The club will defer to the NHL’s policy on handling the disclosure of positive tests results, in that the league will provide updates on a regular basis with aggregate totals of the numbers of tests conducted and number of positive tests reported without disclosing either the identities of affected clubs or players.
Simmons notes that Matthews has been skating with several Coyotes players, some of which have tested positive as well although the names of those have not yet been released. Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Andersen had been living with Matthews for part of this extended break in the schedule but is no longer in Arizona; Simmons adds that he has not tested positive.
There has been a spike in positive COVID-19 tests in several states in recent days and while NHL teams are able to resume training, there are no quarantine restrictions in place at this time as there will be if play resumes as planned later this summer.

If Auston Matthews (or Ezekiel Elliot or whoever) wants to personally go on TV or Twitter or whatever and announce that they have it, so be it, but I don’t understand why these names are being leaked despite HIPAA laws.
i hope these guys sue. the media needs to learn they arent immune to legal action at some point.
Uhhh…HIPAA not applicable in cases such as Covid. PII is allowed to be shared if considered a threat or endangerment to the public. Covid doesn’t have a vaccination and is labeled a pandemic, thus the threat.

You’re wrong. It’s medical information. HIPAA applies.
HIPPA does not apply to anyone outside of the medical community. If a player tells his agent or family member and that person tells someone else or the media, it’s not a HIPPA violation
I understand big money at stake here to finish the playoffs but this is why owners and players need to shut this thing down now before someone doesn’t come back from this… They might think their all healthy butttt…. Their lives and loved ones matter more then a cup move on…

There has been a spike in positive test cases because there is more testing being done. Austin is not going to die!
If some are waiting for zero positive test results before play can be resumed, then you need to come to terms with no NHL until the normal start of the 2021-2022 season. And by then, who knows, CV-20 could be upon you!

Not in places like Florida. Cases are going up because literally nobody cares and acts like there’s not a pandemic going on. Saying the only reason is bra cause there is just more tests is wrong.
well it is true that if they stopped doing tests, there would be far fewer lab confirmed cases…
