We’re still nearly two years away from seeing the Seattle expansion franchise in action, but fans across North America and abroad are already extremely excited for the NHL’s next team. The same thing happened with the Vegas Golden Knights, with plenty of speculation leading up to their November 2016 announcement.
That was a little under a year before the Golden Knights debuted in the NHL, meaning we might have to wait quite a while to learn of Seattle’s moniker. Still, today we got a little closer when the team announced that they had sealed the final five options in the Space Needle 100th anniversary time capsule. Unfortunately that capsule won’t be opened until 2062, meaning fans will have to wait and wonder what name they’ll be chanting during the 2021-22 season.
If you could name it, what would you choose? We’ll run another one of these polls in the future as we get closer to an announcement, but there’s nothing better than early speculations. We’ve included some of the most popular options down below, but make sure to leave your own ideas in the comment sections and explain why you’d choose it!

Always use Seattle Spartans in my NHL 20 franchises
Supersonics
Salmon?
Kraken
Seattle Pilots.
Great matchups with Winnipeg.
“Pilots down the Jets”.
The “ill-fated” Seattle Pilots, absolute junkers of Major League Baseball for one horrendous season. One would hope that somebody in the Seattle organization knows about *that* history. Although, we could come up with a both entertaining and stupid list of Pilots vs the other 31 teams. National Lampoon will not feel threatened, though, by our “creativeness.”
Release the Kraken
squid, slimes, spacely sprockets, flying squirrels, sailors.
The Supersonics
Steelheads
Idaho – ECHL, *THE* Premier Prison Rules League of North America!
Which is perfect for Seattle. They can take Idaho as their affiliate from the Stars. The name and geographic location are perfect
The Rain
Cyclones
Seattle Reign
Would be one if the most logical places for the Whalers to reappear… but then again they’d have to do some editing to the best logo in sports history.
Sledgehammers
Pilots.
But it will probably be some natural disaster.
Whalers!
sleepless in Seattle
Sea Otters…. Tsunami
Seattle Sound.
Seattle Slew-foot
Sockeyes…… Red-Black-White
Raindogs!
Kraken works perfectly and everybody likes it so I know they won’t use it
i just dont think it sounds like a name for a top level professional sports team. but that’s just me.
Agreed, but neither does Golden Knights…that one sounds more like a college mascot.
Street-sleepers
The Sounds
I like Kraken, but only if the color scheme matched the name. Basically take the bottle of the rum. If they do go blue, neon green and silver the name doesn’t match the lack of toughness with those colors.
Seattle Soundgarden.
I don’t care if it doesn’t make any sense
The Seattle Men in the Box.
Unorthodox, but Seattle Soundgarden makes perfect sense… they took their name from a sculpture called the Sound garden
Surge,… Bandits,… Bears, Soar (Space Needle and caffeine reference)
Antifa parasites
GOT EEM!!!1! The Milkshake terrorists!!1!
Thunder. Take a little shot at OKC

Mighty Super Pilots
Rainiers seems like the best name to me. It’s a local reference, it sounds unique, and having a mountain range logo could be pretty cool. Hopefully cooler than the Rockies. Sockeyes would be nice, but apparently Seattle Sockeyes is already trademarked? Either way, I like the alliteration. Same goes for Seattle Seals. It’s not the most exciting, but does it have to be? I like the idea and logo of the Pittsburgh Penguins, so why not the Seattle Seals? Only other name on that list that I like is the Totems, provided it’s cleared with the local indigenous people and the mascot isn’t a moral and visual affront.
Not a big fan of Kraken. Just feels very minor league and I think “release the kraken” will get old very fast.
Some other ideas: Dogfish, Steelheads, Dragonflies, Orcas, Pilots, Sonics, etc, as I’ve seen posted here. Love a lot of those. Especially Steelheads.
Amnucks
Schooners
Seattle Sound or Sounders with the Puget Sound.
The Seattle Sisterhood of The Travelling Pants
Seattle Cattle
Seattle Sasquatches! Huh huh?!?! Pilots will probably take it though
Rainiers is the Tacoma, WA (AAA Affiliate) is the Seattle Mariners and the old Seattle PCL team. Sounders is already their MLS team name, and (Super)Sonics will be used when/if there is a new NBA team in town. I like Metropolitans, a Seattle hockey throwback, Totems or Thunderbirds, all current or former Seattle hockey franchises.
Seattle Breakers homage to old WHL team
Epiphany for Jan. 21, 2020: “The Seattle Skookums”
