The Calgary Flames are in talks with the agent for Tobias Rieder according to Eric Francis of Sportsnet, after the free agent forward impressed on a professional tryout. Rieder failed to receive a qualifying offer from the Edmonton Oilers this summer after he infamously scored zero goals in 67 games with them last season. The 26-year old had tallied at least 12 in each of his previous NHL seasons.
After signing Matthew Tkachuk earlier this week, the Flames are in quite the tight financial situation and would need to clear someone else off the roster to fit in Rieder even on a minimum $700K deal. Given that he needed to take a PTO in the first place however, there seems to be a good chance that they could get Rieder through waivers and have him in the minor leagues as some useful depth if they chose to go that direction.
- The NHL has fined Tampa Bay Lightning forward Cedric Paquette $2,500 for high-sticking Florida Panthers forward Frank Vatrano last night. This the first and only supplementary discipline the NHL has given out during the preseason, something that Vancouver Canucks fans won’t be very happy with after Chris Tierney hit Brock Boeser from behind, resulting in a concussion for the young forward. For Paquette, this isn’t the first time he’s been involved with the Department of Player Safety, but his on-the-edge play is something the Lightning value given the lack of physicality elsewhere in the lineup.
- Corey Perry could need another week before his fractured foot is re-evaluated, meaning he likely won’t be ready for the start of the regular season. Dallas Stars reporter Mike Heika notes that things should be more clear tomorrow, but regardless, this is a disappointing start to what was supposed to be a bounce-back season for the veteran forward. Perry was bought out by the Anaheim Ducks earlier this summer and signed a one-year, $1.5MM deal that could climb all the way to $3.25MM if he hits all of the performance bonuses. In terms of the ones given for games played, Perry needs only 50 to secure a total of $1.25MM.

Tierney should have been suspended *!*^ @(*!
jdgoat
I like Tierney a lot but he definitely deserved a suspension. Don’t know what’s up with that.

JD,
Your softer then soft serve ice cream at Dairy Queen. Wasn’t that bad of a hit far away from the boards. Are we really playing powder puff hockey. If he didn’t like the hit go play in Swedeish leagues bigger ice less hitting more up your alley jd .
ttu27
Listen here, don’t ever use Dairy Queen ice cream as an example of being soft you SOB.
Marner#16
ttu27,

Marner#16
Gerald,
Your a good guy and I beg to differ on this one .
riverrat55
I want say nothing don’t want no problems.
Lindros88
That was an awful hit. Definitely suspension worthy. Tier ey is not Ally a solid clean player but he had some bad judgement on that one. BB is going to have to learn to protect himself better though too
Marner#16

After spending too much time digging up the video on that hit and going through other pages, it appears @Marner#16 you are very much in the minority on this one. Louie DeBrusk’s take on hits from behind was crystal clear – it needs to come out of the game. The thing is, Tierney is not a dirty player. Watching and analyzing the hit, you can tell he’s committed, but tries to pull up just past the last second. He’s having an AHH, CRAP! moment. Targeting a guy who’s been repeatedly concussed is problematic for this and every other league on the planet. The concussion lawsuits will start anew, with the league having no defense. I’ve seen much worse hits, but there are boatloads of people now almost universally screaming “How is there NO suspension for this???” Notice that Tierney himself issued a public apology in Boeser’s direction. He knows he was in the wrong. Good on him, but it was a bad hit from behind. How many times are we all going to comment on these types of hits this year? I’ll take the over on A LOT.
Marner#16
We can all have our opinions. Doubt he thought it was dirty he didn’t wanna see him hurt.
MacJablonski--NotVegasLegend
Absolutely. Guys that don’t play dirty, in general, sometimes get caught up in the moment. And, occasionally, the other guy gets injured. When you see a sincere apology, you have to give him a bit of credit. Not “off the hook” credit, mind you, but some…

Mac , your right after reviewing it several times , what first looked at was short and a little grainy, looked at better one while ago and seen he was trying to let up , and looked at apology by Tierney, hopefully Boeser is doing well, thou he may miss some time , hopefully not long, you are correct on some of the hits by repeat offenders within last few years, I know hockey is a physical game, I can do with a good body check back in the days by Rob Blake, etc. and knocking a player off the puck I can do with the fighting to some extent , planting a player along to boards from behind can’t be tolerated , and hope the Player Safety Stu Grimson who earned that spot by name , will do more if a player or players , star player or not gets hurt to hand out punishment regardless of how many infractions cause it is same players over and over and will not repeat names everyone knows, these hits has to be taken out of a great game of Hockey. am not targeting Tierney for this bad choice against Boeser.
MacJablonski--NotVegasLegend
It’s hard to really crap on Tierney, but he knows he was in the wrong. I just hope this doesn’t start adding up to lost time for Boeser. After all, he *is* their BrockStar in Vancouver.
