New York Rangers Recall Lias Andersson

February 21, 2019 at 12:17 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

In a move that may signify more than just a reward for a young prospect, Lias Andersson has been recalled by the New York Rangers. The team has placed Brett Howden on injured reserve to make room on the roster, but it could point to the team preparing to sit out some of their high priced trade assets ahead of Monday’s deadline. The Rangers have three games in four nights before the deadline passes, and players like Kevin Hayes and Mats Zuccarello are drawing plenty of interest from around the league.

Andersson, 20, was the seventh overall pick in the 2017 draft and made his NHL debut last season with the Rangers. He was given an even bigger chance this year by getting into 21 games, but failed to make much of an offensive impact and found himself back in the minor leagues. The talented Swedish center has 20 points in 36 games for the Hartford Wolf Pack, but still has immense upside and will likely be a huge part of the Rangers short rebuild.

The Rangers of course don’t have to pull players like Hayes and Zuccarello out of the lineup, but with the chance of trade over the next few days still exceedingly high it would benefit them to protect their assets. The trade market is being held hostage right now by the top names like Matt Duchene and Artemi Panarin, but Hayes and Zuccarello have already drawn plenty of interest from around the league.

Hopefully he isn’t buried on the 4th line but Quinn seems to be another AV so I bet he will bury him

I disagree.Quinn is good with young players. If they mess up,they are held accountable. If they are productive, they are rewarded.

Yet he plays Marc Staal twenty minutes a game and its a rebuilding year let the kids play!

Well Staal is a defensemen so comparing his minutes to the minutes of the young forwards is apples to oranges. And unless the plan is to buy him out, they basically have to play him. He’s basically unmovable so him playing is the only chance to raise his trade stock. He’s also playing with DeAngelo who has been pretty inconsistent defensively so pairing him with a stay-at-home defensemen like Staal just makes more sense.
