I’m a little surprised Duclair isn’t getting qualified.
bmcclain23
It’s most likely because he’s arbitration eligible. Similarly to what the Wings did with Frk, not qualifying him allows them to sign him to a contract with lower AAV than what Duclair would get in arbitration.
pawtucket
But doesn’t that make Duclair a UFA? Meaning he could go anywhere he wants now?
Getzlaf's Bald Spot
Yes, just too much of a liability if the arbitrator somehow gives him a significant raise. Chicago doesn’t want to have that hang over them as they pursue other players, so they didn’t tender him. They are still able to try to get him, they just hope to get him for less than an arbitrator would give.
bmcclain23
Yeah technically it does, but his cap hit was $1.2 and the Hawks may not want to give him a raise through arbitration. The Hawks give him the best option to be in the top 6 and also have a decent chance of being on a winning team so it all depends on what he wants. I could definitely see him going to Montreal though, he’s pretty close with Domi from their time in AZ

Devante better be back in WAS

These are the kind of players expansion teams should get. They shouldn’t be able to get players like James Neal, or screw teams and find players like Shea Theodore. I really hope Bettman and whoever else controls expansion rules and such can find middle ground between the old expansion rules and the rules with Vegas

Would you pay 100,000 grand for a used Ford Focus? Prospective owners are not going to shell out a billion dollars just to get bargain basement players.
manos
Not to mention nobody was saying this when Vegas picked their team. Everyone said they weren’t going to be good. Now, because they were immediately successful everyone is complaining. I’m sorry but like Cspera said – if I’m paying $500 million dollars for an expansion team I don’t want to be a basement dweller for 10-years. You’ll never build a fan base and never recoup your investment. The only people to blame here are all the GMs who backed themselves into a corner when they started handing out NMCs and NTCs like they were nothing. Nobody anticipated the success of Karlsson, Haula, Miller, Schmidt, Fleury, Smith, Perron etc and you’re lying if you say you did.
andrewgauldin
They handed out NMC and NTCs because nobody anticipated expansion. And nobody was complaining before Vegas made their selections? Please you have go to be kidding me…
As for owners having to buy a team for $500 Million. I don’t think it should be that expensive as long as the rules of expansion get revamped. Vegas should have had to pay maybe $800 million to get that kind of team. They stole good role players from each team. You’re high if you don’t think people weren’t complaining do the rules.
Lastly, even if a new expansion team only got players who did not receive qualifying offers, players who were bought out, and free agents, that does not mean they have to be a bottom dweller in the basement for 10 years. That’s exaggerating. A good gm could get that team in the playoffs in just a couple years. Maybe in its inaugural season since 16 teams make the playoffs.

You’re acting like Vegas was gifted a roster of All Star players. Post-draft the team was composed of two bonafide top six players (Neal and Marchessault), two second liners (Smith and Perron), a franchise goalie, a bunch of second and third pair dmen, and a bunch of bottom six forwards (aka the type of players you are suggesting should be available). Marc Methot was likely the best defensemen they took and he didn’t even play for Vegas (or Dallas for that matter).
William Karlsson is the one guy who surprised the most but its not like Columbus knowingly gave up a star player. We’re talking about a guy who was going to his third team in five years and had never recorded more than 9 goals or 25 points in a season prior to the past one and only had 50 career points to his name in four seasons. I doubt anyone outside of Karlsson’s family thought he would put up as many points as he did.
Connorsoxfan
I called Schmidt, Fleury, and as a bruins fan I always liked Miller but he outperformed my expectations and all the other guys did as well. But I did think Schmidt would take that next step, and I thought Fleury was still better than people gave him credit for.
JT19
What was unfair about the Vegas expansion draft? Realistically, some of the other 30 teams tried to get slick by trying to dump some bad contracts. Other teams got caught at a slightly bad time cap wise, but its not like they didn’t have an idea that an expansion team was coming (they also had a full year to prepare for it in regards to who could be protected). Lets just take a look at some of the better players they acquired:
Karlsson (and some picks, I believe a first rounder) were sent to Vegas just so Columbus could get rid of David Clarkson’s contract. Even before Karlsson’s breakout that was considered to be a lot to give up just to get a contract off the books. Marchessault was gifted to Vegas so they would take Reilly Smith’s contract (keep in mind Florida chose to hold onto Alex Petrovic over Marchessault). It’s not Vegas’ fault that Florida gave Smith a $5m AAV and decided they couldn’t pay that only a year later. Haula was considered a bottom six player, exactly the type of player you suggested that should be available, so Vegas would pass on the Wild’s dmen. Sure Perron is talented, but he is also wildly injury prone…him being as healthy as he was this year is probably more surprising than his actual performance. Shea Theodore was sent to Vegas so they would take Clayton Stoner’s contract (both of whom were casualties of the Anaheim defensemen factory). Fleury was likely gone anyway as the Penguins wanted to move to Murray. Engelland was a career third pair dman. Miller was surprisingly left available by Boston despite being able to protect him.
The only legitimate guys who were exposed and taken (and played for Vegas) because of the system were Neal and Schmidt. I’ll give you any argument for Neal and Schmidt was likely going to be gone in a year anyway since Washington is being squeezed by the cap. Washington still won the Stanley Cup so they obviously didn’t miss Schmidt that much.
JT19
If the Seattle expansion team has success (and luck) with their expansion draft, even with the Vegas expansion rules, that’s all on the other teams. They would have had plenty of time to game plan for it (it’ll be another year or two before the next expansion draft). Sure some good players will be left exposed because of their team’s cap situation but most of the good players will be exposed because their team gave out NMC’s left and right. You can’t really blame the process when most of Vegas’ key contributors were acquired via trade so their original team could dump a contract onto Vegas’ books.

Genius move with Claesson. He had a down year last year and he’s still much better than Ceci, Harpur, And Boro.

Nordstrom from the Canes is an excellent penalty killer.

I understand what Rutherford did, but I’d hate to lose Riley Sheahan.
I bet the Habs have called him already. He’s what they need.
