The Stanley Cup Finals are right around the corner and we’re now just a month away from the NHL Entry Draft. Teams like the New York Islanders and Minnesota Wild are getting new management, while others like the Dallas Stars and New York Rangers will be welcoming new coaches on the bench.
With that in mind, we’ll be running another mailbag this weekend. Our writers will answer all your questions—Stanley Cup related or not—in this week’s edition. Submit your queries using the #PHRMailbag hashtag on Twitter, or by leaving a comment down below.
You can read our previous mailbag right here, where our Brian La Rose dives into the future for the Carolina Hurricanes, what’s left for Jonathan Toews, and potential rule changes for NHL play.

Edmonton has a ton of pressure to bounce back after a horrible season, does Chiarelli panic and make another Chiarelli one for one move

Isn’t there actually a chance Ottawa’s owner would block that since he wouldn’t want to pay McDavid? Only kind of kidding…

I have a question: Does Las Vegas being in the Finals cause a credibility problem for the NHL or is it just an indication that the expansion process was skewed?
vegasloveforthebills
The expansion process was skewed, but not because of the different rules.
It was skewed this time because of NMCs and the salary cap. GMs need to stop being dumb.
Another thing people never talk about is that the Vegas roster had 13 or 14 guys that were pending free agents. Half the team is playing for their next deal.

The expansion process was like absolutely none other in the history of the 4 major sports. I can remember teams like the Islanders, Flames, Capitals and Rockies getting nothing more than 4th line players or players from the minors. I feel bad for the Knights because whether they win the Cup or not, there is absolutely no where to go but down. I hope they enjoy this ride because it won’t carry on into next season.

Hockey is UNDOUBTEDLY the greatest game on the planet…with, in my eyes, one major flaw. For openers, let me just state for the record, I am not some “newbie”…I have been watching the game for almost 50 years. Now back to the major flaw. Many of the rules of the game are either widely ignored or adhered to to the point of aggravation. So here are my questions, can you or anyone explain to me why cross checking, by the actual definition, is allowed unilaterally throughout each and every game? Why is the new and quite ridiculous face off rule called multiple times per game? All this is doing is slowing up the pace of the game. Why is tripping called when it is clear to everyone else watching the game at home or in the arena that the action was not a “planned” tripping but rather the opposing player stepped on another players stick? Why ISN’T interference called when it happens over and over again each and every game? Obstruction is obstruction…they called it to the letter a few years back and suddenly stopped. So you are allowed to stop a player who clearly dumped the puck in but you are not allowed to put a “pick” in the play to allow your skater to get some open ice. Why is there so much confusion with goaltender interference? Quite simply put, if the goalie is in his crease and an opposing player hits that goalie in any way shape or form OTHER than by being pushed in by a teammate of the goalie, then it is interference. Why is instant replay allowed for things such as off sides…goalie interference…shooting the puck out of the playing area but not for all other penalties? Okay so you don’t want a challenge on each and every altercation because it slows down the game…like a face off violation does, but don’t we want the right call on the ice? Having watched over 400 games this year, I was able to witness over 30 times when a high sticking call was made and there actually was NO contact by the penalized player. Final comment/question…everyone claims to want to see scoring go up because that is what excites the fans, so why not call the game according to the letter of the rule on each and every rule???
