The Boston Bruins have finally entered the free agent frenzy, inking right-handed defenseman Paul Postma to a one-year deal. TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports that it is a one-way contract worth $725K for the 28-year-old two-way defenseman. The long-time Winnipeg Jet is coming off a career-high in games played (65) and points (14), but nonetheless will have to fight for a roster spot and could very well wind up with the AHL’s Providence Bruins. If he can make the roster, he should provide Boston with much-needed depth, especially with veteran John-Michael Liles not expected back this year.

God the bruins are going to be crap next year I guess if there’s no over the hill 30+ yr olds they want no part of free agency
BsFan78
Funny how they need a LS D and they opt for a RS for “depth”
mcase7187
Yup I don’t think Sweeney knows what he’s doing anymore
soxsam32
Anymore?? Dude never knew what he was doing. Reilly Smith for Hayes was a terrible deal(I think that was Sweeney), plus terrible contracts for Backes and Beleskey. It’s been a disaster
mcase7187
True that I was trying to give him credit for the young guys Carlo and McAvoy

IMO I just don’t see the B’s being any better than last year. Try selling that to your season ticket holders Cam. Don’t think the Jacobs family will appreciate that so much.

Man you guys are a bunch of whiners, how did the big FA signings around the league last year do? Oh they were terrible wastes of money. This is a depth defenseman that they gave next to nothing to get. They pushed the Sens to the brink with 4 injured DMen and starting a kid right out of college. This team has such a bright future but you can’t see beyond them not overspending for an below average free agent class.
Connorsoxfan
They need a top 6 forward and a fringe 2nd pair or good 3rd pairing defenseman, and maybe a backup goalie because I’m not high on Khudobin. I wanted them to ship out Spooner for picks, and grab Justin Williams, Michael Del Zotto, and Chad Johnson. Might’ve had to move McQuaid to squeeze that in considering a new deal for Pastrnak, but it would’ve been manageable. All those guys are off the market, Hanzal is gone, and there’s basically nothing left for them to do. Sure, they’re set up long term, but they could’ve set themselves up for this year and not mortgaged the future but chose not to.
Connorsoxfan
Ryan Miller and Hartnell were guys I was interested in too but they are off the market as well. Both cheap short term deals for guys who can still play. Not what they used to be, but they can play.
Hannibal8us
I do agree they need to find a better backup goalie. Can’t expect Rask to play as much as he did last year and still be fresh for the playoffs.
Hannibal8us
While all those guys are nice Williams got 2 year 9m deal and Hanzel got 3 for 14.25m neither of them is worth that much. I’d rather see them bring back Stafford and Moore than overpay and block the young guys from coming up. I do agree they need to trade Spooner but I think other teams know what he brings to the table and aren’t willing to give up much. This team is going to be fine, scoring has always been a problem for them but they have so much depth at the blue line they’ll be able to get a real impact player at the deadline if they need it. None of these free agents move the needle much and throwing tons of money at any of them for a team that has important pieces to resign would be a mistake.

Williams would look really good on that second line with Krejci and Backes. I want to see them go after Jagr to fill out the top 6. He can still play. Not like he used to but he can play. Also since it’s only a two year deal, they could still fit in Pastrnak and not destroy their cap long term. Hanzal isn’t really a good fit since Backes already has to play on the wing, but Hanzal would look good centering the 3rd line with Vatrano on one side and the guy I can’t think of on the other. Pastrnak is the only player who needs to be resigned, Chara is up next year and likely gone, so basically make it work this year and a Williams type deal would allow them to make a big play either by moving his expiring deal next year or waiting for it to expire and grabbing someone the year after. Moral of the story is they could have fielded a team that could’ve competed for the cup and simply chose not to it seems. Barring a Duchene trade (which wouldn’t even make a whole lot of sense) though I could see Landeskog if they send back some salary, it doesn’t seem like they’ll be big competitors at this point, which is a shame considering what Cassidy did with the current squad last year while he was there.
Connorsoxfan
I agree on resigning stafford and Moore though.
mcase7187
No one not both we need to add so youth to this team upfront
Connorsoxfan
Plenty of guys in the system who should be ready soon but not quite yet. 1 year deals for those two guys won’t really impact long term plans. Moore signed somewhere else anyways
weatherwiz
The organization has become nothing but a big joke

Goes to show where the people who read here (or at least care enough to comment) are from/fans of when most of the other articles have 0-3 comments and the one about the Bruins has 15+ lol.
Hannibal8us
Not just that but it’s a depth signing, not some huge deal.
PeterDipersio
Now the Bruins are trying to find an elite defenseman! I remember they had a couple in Dougie Hamilton and Johnny Boychuck!
Connorsoxfan
Neither of those guys are elite, Boychuck was traded by Chiarelli, and Hamilton was pretty expensive and I believe that pick turned into Brandon Carlo.
Connorsoxfan
And what gave you the impression they want an elite defenseman? Chara, Carlo, Krug, Mcavoy, McQuaid, Miller is a find top 6. This guy is a depth signing who might not even make the roster. Not to mention one of the prospects could surprise us and jump in and then they can flip McQuaid for a late pick and add something of importance at the deadline.
