Rieder’s Agent Wants Client Traded

The Arizona Coyotes have played hardball with their restricted free agent (RFA) Tobias Rieder all off-season, and now it appears that the two sides won’t be coming to an agreement.

In an email to Craig Morgan of ArizonaSports.com, Rieder’s agent Darren Ferris said the young winger is “really disappointed” with the team, adding he thinks “it would be best for both parties if they just traded him.”

As Pro Hockey Rumors reported earlier today, Rieder is looking for a two-year, $5MM contract, while the Coyotes won’t budge from their two-year, $4.4MM offer. Ferris called the team’s lack of negotiation “unfortunate.”

Coyotes GM John Chayka said the team was originally interested in signing Rieder long-term, but the two sides couldn’t establish any common ground so they moved on to a bridge deal. Chayka told Morgan there isn’t a lot of “wiggle-room or creativity involved” when limited to comparables. The new GM insists Rieder will not be traded. If that’s the case and the two sides cannot come to terms, then the KHL is likely Rieder’s next option. Ferris said they have received a couple of offers from clubs in the KHL, which he will turn his attention to in the coming week.

Rieder is currently in Toronto, where he’s suiting up for Team Europe in the World Cup of Hockey Finals versus Canada. Coyotes head coach and executive VP of hockey operations Dave Tippett was also taking part as an assistant coach for Team North America. Morgan reports the two men had dinner together earlier in the tournament, but could not make any progress on a deal.

The 23-year-old Rieder scored 14 goals and 37 points in 82 games last season.

RFA Notes

It’s been an unusual off-season in the NHL, with seven high profile Restricted Free Agents (RFAs) remaining a week into training camp. Compared to last off-season, when teams moved quickly to sign or trade players to avoid the threat of offer sheets.

In a series of tweets, TSN’s Bob McKenzie sent out the latest in negotiations from across the league.

Anaheim Ducks – Hampus Lindholm and Rickard Rakell – The Ducks are using Morgan Rielly and Seth Jones as comparable contracts, while Lindholm’s camp is pointing to Aaron Ekblad’s $7.5MM AAV. McKenzie clarifies that Lindholm isn’t asking for $7.5MM, more in the $6MM-plus range. McKenzie hasn’t been able to determine the range of numbers from the Rakell negotiations yet.

Arizona Coyotes – Tobias Rieder – The two sides are less than $500K apart. Rieder is currently looking for two years at $2.5MM per season, while the Coyotes aren’t budging on their offer of two years in the low $2MM range. Rieder does have KHL offers to consider, or McKenzie suggests he could ask for a trade or hold out.

Buffalo Sabres – Rasmus Ristolainen – The Sabres and Ristolainen are in the same situation as the Ducks and Lindholm, according to McKenzie. The two sides are at least $1MM apart, with each side standing firm with their comparables.

Calgary Flames – Johnny Gaudreau – This is likely the most fascinating case, as Gaudreau isn’t technically an RFA because he falls under the 10.2(c) CBA clause. Because Gaudreau hasn’t accrued three years experience, he isn’t eligible for an offer sheet and therefore has basically no power, other than holding out. McKenzie believes the Flames want Gaudreau to sign in the same range as Sean Monahan (six-years, $6.375MM per) and no higher than captain Mark Giordano ($6.75MM per), while Gauderau is looking for more than $8MM per season. The two sides have not negotiated recently, according to McKenzie, who called the situation “bit of a Cold War”.

Tampa Bay Lightning – Nikita Kucherov – If not Gaudreau, then Kucherov is definitely the most complex RFA situation due to the Lightning’s cap issues. While Kucherov has a long list of comparable contracts in the six-year, $36MM range, that’s not possible in the Lightning’s current state. They’ll need to move someone to accommodate another $6MM; McKenzie believes Ben Bishop will be traded sometime this season, but expects he’ll start the season in Tampa.

Winnipeg Jets – Jacob Trouba – There has been plenty of digital ink spilled on Trouba’s trade request, but the only new information from McKenzie was that Trouba is not interested in signing an offer sheet, because the Jets would not be allowed to trade him for a calendar year, should they match. That defeats the purpose of wanting to be traded.

It is still early in the season, but there is a firm deadline coming up: December 1st. Should an RFA not be signed by then, then he will be ineligible to play for the remainder of the season.

This is likely only a consideration for Trouba, with the Jets’ habit of slow-playing trade requests and waiting out poor trade offers.

‘Yotes Notes: Rieder, Camp Cuts, OEL

Sarah McLellan of AZCentral gives us a number of interesting tidbits from the Arizona Coyotes training camp, including one from Tobias Rieder’s agent Darren Ferris. The restricted free agent remains unsigned, and Ferris says that he will not report to camp without a deal.

Rieder is currently at the World Cup as part of the Cinderella Team Europe, but will not report after the tournament ends. There has been much discussion this offseason, though a deal does not seem close. Rieder scored 14 goals and 37 points last season, but has considered a move to the KHL if something cannot be worked out with the Coyotes.

  • In an expected move, the Coyotes have trimmed their roster at training camp, releasing Austin Lotz, Olivier LeBlanc and MacKenzie Braid. Head coach Dave Tippet says there will be more cuts on Wednesday and next weekend.  Braid is the son of the Coyotes skating coach Dawn Braid, and had only been brought to camp a few days ago out of Wilfred Laurier University in Ontario.
  • Oliver Ekman-Larsson of the recently eliminated Swedish World Cup team, will not be travelling back to the club today, and isn’t expected to get into an exhibition game until sometime next week. Larsson is set to begin his seventh season with the club, despite only being 25 years old. After back to back twenty-goal seasons from the back end, ’OEL’ is one of the most dangerous weapons on any team’s blueline, and is set to become a free agent after the 2018-19 season (when he’ll still only be 27, at least for a few more days).

News and notes from around the NHL:

  • The Los Angeles Kings extended a training camp invitation to Devin Setoguchi, reports FOX Sports LA Kings Insider Jon Rosen. The former NHL winger played in Switzerland last season for HC Davos after flaming out in Calgary the year before and then failing to make the Toronto Maple Leafs roster on a PTO. Setoguchi was drafted 8th overall in 2005, and peaked in 2008-09 when he scored 31G and 34A in 81 games for the San Jose Sharks. He never attained that level again, however, and slowly declined over the next few years. Setoguchi has scored 127G and 122A in 471 NHL games over his career, and he’s looking for another chance to add to the tally.
  • Tobias Rieder says that he will not attend the Arizona Coyotes training camp without a new contract, reports Dhiren Mahiban. The Coyotes and Rieder seem far apart on the deal for the yet-unsigned RFA. Rieder cites visa issues as one of the reasons why he will not come to camp sans contract, but it could also be a negotiation tactic to put pressure on the Coyotes organization. The German forward will have a chance to make his case for a better contract offer this September as he suits up for Team Europe in the World Cup of Hockey.
  • Columbus Blue Jackets and Team USA coach John Tortorella told ESPN’s Linda Cohn that he would bench a player if they protested during the national anthems—alluding to the NFL’s Colin Kaepernick protesting the American national anthem by sitting, and then kneeling. Tortorella is no stranger to controversy, though, as he has sworn at a reporter on live TV, threw a water bottle at a fan, and tried to fight a fellow coach during an intermission.

While a contract doesn’t appear to be imminent, contract talks continue between the Arizona Coyotes and RFA winger Tobias Rieder.  Speaking with AZCentral’s Sarah McLellan, GM John Chayka had the following to say about their discussions:

“We continue to discuss things and made a series of very fair offers – different ways, shapes and forms. Nothing yet that’s in agreement yet with his camp. We like the player a lot. We think he’s a very good player. He adds a lot of value to our team and impact, and we hope and expect him to be at camp and be a part of our group.”

Rieder is coming off a strong sophomore NHL season, setting career bests in goals (14), assists (23), points (37), and ice time (17:08 per game) and projects as a top six forward for the Coyotes this season if a deal can be reached.

Last month, Arizona Sports columnist Craig Morgan reported that the team had submitted a two year offer between $2MM and $2.3MM per year and a three year offer that would be closer to $2.5MM annually.  Meanwhile, Rieder’s agent Darren Ferris was seeking $2.75MM per season on two or three year contracts or $3MM on a four year pact.  It’s also believed that Rieder has at least two KHL offers on the table if they can’t come to terms on a new deal.

Rieder will be suiting up for Team Europe at the upcoming World Cup and will be insured to play by the league and Players’ Association since he isn’t under contract.

Elsewhere around the league:

  • Boston prospect Zach Senyshyn underwent a successful appendectomy on Monday, the team announced. Senyshyn, a 2015 first round pick (15th overall), has been ruled out of rookie camp while his readiness for the opening of their main training camp is unknown.  He recorded 45 goals in just 66 OHL games last season and could conceivably make a push to open the year with the big club if he has a strong preseason.  As a junior-aged player, he could suit up in nine or fewer NHL games without burning the first year of his entry-level contract.
  • With pre-tournament games set to begin this week, World Cup teams are finalizing their leadership cores. Team Sweden named Henrik Sedin as their new captain, replacing Henrik Zetterberg.  In speaking with NHL.com’s Dan Rosen, Sedin called it an honor but wouldn’t go as far as calling it a dream come true as he never envisioned himself wearing the ‘C’ for the Tre Kronor.  Despite getting the nod, Sedin anticipates the team will be captained more by committee than by himself.  Henrik is one of three members of the Swedish squad who also won Olympic gold ten years ago in Italy; the others are his brother Daniel and Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist.
  • Team Finland announced that they have appointed Tampa Bay center Valtteri Filppula and Florida left wing/center Jussi Jokinen as alternate captains. Minnesota’s Mikko Koivu was named team captain two weeks ago.

Coyotes Notes: Bolland, Rieder, Tryouts

It will be a long time before Arizona gets to see Dave Bolland suit up for the team, writes Craig Morgan of Arizona Sports.  Bolland is dealing with a pair of significant injuries, one to his ankle and the other his back.  The ankle injury was sustained during his time with Toronto in 2013 but requires a lot of daily maintenance and the back issue is preventing that maintenance from happening.  Bolland’s agent, Anton Thun, commented about the process:

“There is a vertebra that is pinching a nerve so it’s not sending an electrical signal down to the ankle to provide that impulse to activate. Until his back is fully healed, it’s difficult to rehab the ankle. There’s nothing nefarious about this. It’s just a long process.”

While the Coyotes have assumed the remaining three years of Bolland’s deal which carries a cap hit of $5.5MM as part of their acquisition of prospect Lawson Crouse, he will be placed on Long-Term Injury Reserve to start the season; as a result, they will only wind up being responsible for 20% of his actual salary.

More Coyotes notes from Morgan’s column:

  • RFA winger Tobias Rieder will participate in the World Cup after securing an alternative form of insurance. (Other RFA’s such as Johnny Gaudreau and Jacob Trouba are also expected to do so in order to play.)  While the impasse has led some to wonder if GM John Chayka may wind up moving the 23 year old, a league source tells Morgan that there is no chance that they trade him.  Rieder is currently participating in an Olympic qualification tournament and had a goal and an assist in a 5-0 victory for Germany over Japan earlier today.
  • Arizona has added six people to their hockey operations department recently, including a trio of scouts and a new Director of Statistical Science.
  • While many teams are expected to bring in players on tryout deals for training camp, the Coyotes aren’t planning to add anyone via that route at this time. You can keep track of who is trying out where with our Invite Tracker.

Pacific Division: Remaining RFAs

We’re now in the dying days of August, less than a month away from the start of the World Cup and training camps. However, there are still 15 restricted free agents remaining, and many of them are not who you would expect to be unsigned at this point. Two NHL teams’ leading scorers, four top-four defensemen, and several other high quality players are still looking for new deals.

Let’s break down the remaining RFAs by division, starting out west in the Pacific Division:

Anaheim Ducks – $7.52MM in cap space, according to Cap Friendly – The Ducks have mostly stood pat this summer after bringing back Randy Carlyle to replace the fired Bruce Boudreau. However, the budget-bound Ducks still have some work to do – their best defenseman, Hampus Lindholm, and World Cup-bound center Rickard Rakell still need new contracts. Lindholm logged the most minutes on the Ducks and put up 28 points as a dependable two-way force. Rakell is behind Ryan Getzlaf and Ryan Kesler on the center depth chart, but finished fourth on the Ducks in points with 43. The Ducks would like to get both signed long term, but will need to get creative to fit it all under their self-imposed budget. Cam Fowler has been the subject of trade rumors throughout the summer as the Ducks ready themselves for these two contracts and next summer’s expansion draft.

Arizona Coyotes – $7.85MM in cap space, according to Cap Friendly – Arizona has been locked in tough negotiations with Tobias Rieder all summer. It’s believed the talented scorer and reliable two-way winger is looking for a contract similar to new Coyotes forward Jamie McGinn, who signed a three-year, $10MM contract. However, new GM John Chayka isn’t budging, and Rieder has threatened to head to the KHL if the two sides can’t come to an agreement.

Calgary Flames – $8.59MM in cap space, according to Cap Friendly – The Flames have been in an unenviable situation this summer, with their two top forwards needing new contracts. GM Brad Treliving locked up center Sean Monahan to a seven-year, $44.625MM contract last week, but has yet to sign the team’s leading scorer Johnny Gaudreau. Gaudreau has said he won’t negotiate during the upcoming World Cup, where he’ll suit up for Team North America. Their camp starts on the long weekend, so there’s just two weeks remaining for Gaudreau and the Flames to put pen to paper. The Flames also have to sign Freddie Hamilton, minor league center and brother of Dougie. Hamilton played four NHL games last season, potting a goal and an assist.

Coyotes Notes: Hanzal, Rieder, Strome

While former Arizona GM Don Maloney was originally looking to sign center Martin Hanzal to an extension this summer before he wound up being let go, his replacement in John Chayka doesn’t seem to be as enthusiastic about the idea, writes Craig Morgan of Arizona Sports.  Morgan reports that Chayka held talks with Hanzal’s representatives shortly after he took over but those talks were pushed to the backburner.

Chayka’s comments certainly suggest they’re in no rush to get a new deal done with the 29 year old:

“If there was something that made sense, we would probably take a closer look at that because Marty’s been a good player for us.  But maybe it’s not a bad thing to get into the season and see how things play out.”

Hanzal has spent his entire nine year career with the Coyotes.  Last season, he had a career year offensively, picking up 13 goals and 28 assists in just 64 games, setting career highs in both assists and points.  He also won an impressive 56% of his faceoffs, putting him in a tie for 15th league wide amongst players who took at least 300 draws last season.

Hanzal is entering the final season of a five year deal that carries a cap hit of $3.1MM and a salary of $3.5MM.  He will be an unrestricted free agent after 2016-17 and should be in line for a sizable raise if he can repeat his efforts from last season.

More news and notes surrounding the Coyotes:

  • Also from Morgan, there is no update to the Tobias Rieder contract situation. The two sides are believed to be several hundred thousand dollars apart per season.  Rieder’s agent Darren Ferris suggested earlier this summer that Rieder would be open to signing in the KHL if a deal can’t be reached.
  • Nick Cotsonika of NHL.com sat down with Chayka with the focus being on their youngsters, particularly Christian Dvorak and Dylan Strome, both of whom are expected to contend for a roster spot in training camp. Some have suggested that with Strome’s case in particular, he has achieved all he can at the junior level (he is too young to play in the AHL) and that sending him back could be detrimental to his development.  Chayka is at least mindful of that concept, noting “I do think there is, obviously, a fine line between overbaking your prospects. I think there’s some detriments that can occur if you do that as well. But at the same time, there’s no rush for these players.”  The Coyotes are expected to have a few spots open for younger players next season.

Coyotes Notes: Rieder, Vermette, Strome

Arizona restricted free agent winger Tobias Rieder is reportedly now seeking a two year contract with a cap hit of $2.75MM, reports Arizona Sports’ Craig Morgan.  Rieder’s agent, Darren Ferris, has also proposed a three year pact, also believed to be at $2.75MM each year and a four year offer with a cap hit of $3MM, one that would take the 23 year old to unrestricted free agency.

Meanwhile, the Coyotes are believed to be offering somewhere between $2MM and $2.3MM per season on a two year deal and would up the offer closer to $2.5MM on a three year deal.

Ferris has suggested recently that Rieder has received offers from overseas that are higher than what the Coyotes have offered so far.  The big question is would Rieder seriously consider signing elsewhere or is it just a negotiating ploy to get GM John Chayka to up their offer?  Morgan tweeted today that Ferris noted the start of the KHL season (August 22nd) won’t affect contract talks and that any decision to go to the Russian league would be made after the World Cup of Hockey.  Rieder will suit up for Team Europe in that tournament.

Last season, Rieder posted career numbers across the board, collecting 14 goals and 23 assists while playing in all 82 games.  He also saw his average ice time jump up to 17:18 per game, fourth highest among Coyote forwards.

Other news and notes from the Coyotes:

  • Chayka commented further on Monday’s surprising decision to buy out Antoine Vermette, telling Dave Vest on the team’s official website that it was a very difficult decision. “It’s the toughest day I’ve had so far in this role … Antoine was a class act for us, and on and off the ice he’s a great player and a great person, and he helped us grow this organization. We’re certainly thankful and grateful for that. For us, it just came down to a matter of we have to continue to improve our group and we need to move forward and get better as quickly as we can. With some of the young players that we have in the pipeline there’s some flexibility that this move creates. We felt it was necessary to do so to improve our group. It was a tough decision.”
  • Arizona has five prospects taking place in this week’s World Junior Summer Showcase, a development camp and tournament for prospects from Canada, the USA, Finland, and Sweden. Among those is 2015 third overall pick Dylan Strome with Team Canada.  While it’s anticipated that Vermette’s departure was made largely in part to create a roster spot for Strome with the Coyotes last season, Chayka wouldn’t go as far as confirming that he’ll play with Arizona in 2016-17 in that same interview.  He did suggest that he has higher expectations for Strome in training camp, saying that “As camp wears on and fatigue starts to set in and he’s playing up against bigger and stronger players, I think he’ll have that endurance this year to get himself through. Right now he’s doing everything that he can to make sure that’s the case and that’s a comforting thing as a manager to see.”

Coyotes, Tobias Rieder Still At Impasse On New Deal

Arizona GM John Chayka has already accomplished much this offseason but a GM’s work is never done. The Coyotes still have RFA Tobias Rieder to re-sign and it appears a deal is not close to being completed.

According to Rieder’s representation, agent Darren Ferris, “There’s been no discussions at this point that have made any meaningful change in anyone’s position.”

Rieder is coming off a 14-goal, 37-point performance this past season and is looking to cash in. Last month, Ferris appeared to have established their expectations for a new contract by naming Nazem Kadri as a reasonable comparable. Kadri netted a six-year deal with Toronto with an AAV of $4.5MM a year ago on the heels of an 18-goal, 39-point campaign. Rieder, 23, tallied 37 points a year ago and on the surface that performance would appear to represent a fair talking point on a new contract. However, Kadri had a much longer and more distinguished track record than the two-year veteran Coyotes forward.

First, Kadri was a high first round draft choice, going 7th overall in 2009. Rieder was a 4th round selection two years later. Teams are willing to bet on upside in contract negotiations and 1st round picks generally come with more untapped potential than 4th rounders.

Second, when Kadri agreed to his extension, he already had posted at least 40 points in four separate NHL campaigns, with a career best 50 coming in 2013-14. He also had six years of NHL experience, putting him just two years away from unrestricted free agency per the terms of the current CBA. Rieder, on the other hand, just completed his second NHL campaign, leaving him well away from unrestricted free agency. Kadri had accomplished far more at the NHL level over a far longer period of time than has Rieder to this point and was closer to reaching free agency.

Ferris also pointed out Jamie McGinn’s recent three-year contract with Arizona as a base line for negotiations. McGinn carries an AAV of $3.33MM.

Again, McGinn has been in the league a lot longer than Rieder (veteran of 450 NHL games) and has two, 20-goal campaigns on his resume. He also signed his deal as an UFA with far more leverage thanks to a broad market than Rieder has as an RFA.

As Morgan wrote, perhaps the most logical comparable given Rieder’s age, experience and production level is Vladislav Namestnikov of Tampa Bay. Through 127 career NHL games, Namestnikov has tallied 23 goals and 51 points, numbers reasonably close to Rieder’s. Namestnikov was selected with the 27th selection in the 1st round of the 2011 entry draft and is the same age as Rieder. Tampa secured Namestnikov’s services on a two-year deal worth slightly less than $2MM annually.

Rieder’s camp is marketing the winger using advanced stats and as we know, Chayka is well-versed in analytics. Evidently, Ferris has yet to make a compelling enough case to sway the Arizona GM to their way of thinking on Rieder’s value. Chayka is obviously sticking to his guns as whatever deal he and Rieder agree on sets a standard for future negotiations. Every new contract adds to the pool of possible comparable deals other agents will point to when advocating for their clients and it’s the job of club management to try to keep those salaries as low as possible.

Ferris has suggested the German-born Rieder would entertain offers to play overseas and while that possibility can’t be discounted, particularly if his European contract contained an out-clause, the NHL is the premier league in the world and most players want to play there. It might go down to the wire but I fully expect the Coyotes and Rieder to get a deal done, likely very similar to Namestnikov’s, but perhaps eclipsing $2MM in AAV.
