Atlantic Notes: Bjugstad, Athanasiou, Karlsson, Callahan

Panthers forward Nick Bjugstad has long been in trade speculation but nothing has come to fruition.  Even though his name has popped up in the rumor mill once again as of late, his agent Ben Hankinson told Michael Russo of The Athletic during an interview on KFAN (audio link) that it’s unlikely that his client winds up being dealt:

“I’m pretty close with their GM, Dale Tallon, who’s a big Nick Bjugstad fan. Even the last couple of years hasn’t been, numbers-wise, as productive for him so there was a lot of talk. A couple of years ago too. And it’s the same teams: Montreal, Pittsburgh was looking, the Wild have always been in the mix. So every time I go to Dale, he says, ‘Not a chance, Hank. There’s not a chance we’re trading him. I love him.’”

The 25-year-old adapted well to being shifted to the wing with Florida and posted a career year offensively with 49 points (19-30-49) in 82 games.  However, given Bjugstad’s size and ability to play down the middle, the Panthers are assuredly going to continue to field interest in him but it doesn’t appear that they’re willing to deal him just yet.

  • Although the Red Wings were able to get a deal done fairly quickly with Andreas Athanasiou, Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press believes there is still a chance the team could trade the winger. The 23-year-old has shown flashes of becoming a dominant player but at the same time, has struggled considerably with his focus in his own end which has drawn the ire of the coaching staff.  At $3MM for two years, St. James suggests that teams may view his new deal as an asset which could help facilitate a move if Detroit is inclined to part ways with Athanasiou.
  • With talks that discussions between the Senators and Lightning regarding defenseman Erik Karlsson have cooled off, Larry Brooks of the New York Post reports that Dallas has now re-emerged as the likeliest destination for the blueliner. The Stars had shown interest early on but weren’t inclined to include top prospect Miro Heiskanen in a trade which is what had seemingly put them out of the running early on.
  • From the same report, Brooks adds that the Rangers still have some interest in bringing back winger Ryan Callahan if Tampa Bay decides that they still need to free up some cap space for this season and next. New York will likely be seeking some form of draft pick compensation from the Lightning to relieve them of their $5.8MM per season obligation over the next two years.

Metropolitan Notes: Johnson, Myers, Rangers

While defensemen have been receiving big deals in the last week or two, one deal that caught many by surprise was the five-year, $16.25MM deal that Jack Johnson signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins signed on July 1. While Johnson was a highly-touted prospect at one time and developed into a solid NHL veteran, the five-year term seemed like a lot considering that the 31-year-old had lost his job at the end of the season with the Columbus Blue Jackets and instead took up a role as a healthy scratch for the remainder of the season and the playoffs. Regardless, Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford had coaches’ Mike Sullivan and Sergei Gonchar look into the three games leading up to Johnson’s benching and they walked away with a positive impression and the team signed the veteran.

The Athletic’s Jesse Marshall (subscription required) took a look at the three games before Johnson was benched and analyzes and breaks down the veteran’s play, citing that his performance was solid, but underwhelming and while the defenseman did have some bad luck at times, what stood out the most was his lack of involvement in the team’s offense as he seems to only have been focusing on his defensive game, which might be exactly what Rutherford and the Penguins want out of Johnson.

  • Charlie O’Connor of The Athletic (subscription required) writes that the Philadelphia Flyers’ signing of Christian Folin almost guarantees that defensive prospect Philippe Myers will begin the season with the AHL Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The 21-year-old undrafted free agent had a solid rookie season with the Phantoms last season and was expected to get a “long look” in Flyers training camp in September. However, with six quality NHL established defenseman already on the roster (not counting the injured Samuel Morin), Myers would have to beat one of them out to make the team. General manager Ron Hextall wouldn’t allow Myers to make the team as the team’s seventh defenseman when he could return to Lehigh Valley and get valuable playing experience. So, while many were upset that the team went out and signed Folin, it’s likely that Folin will man that extra defenseman role instead.
  • The New York Rangers have been talked about as a potential third-team in any deal involving Erik Karlsson. The team has $23.7MM in cap room to work with and with the team in a quick rebuild, this would be the perfect time to add more picks or prospects to that effort. While the team might be open to acquiring Ryan Callahan from Tampa Bay, The Athletic’s Rick Carpiniello (subscription required) writes that the team will not take on the contract of veteran Bobby Ryan, who still has four years at $7.25MM remaining on his deal. He writes that the Rangers don’t believe they will still be rebuilding in three or four years and being burdened by that deal down the road wouldn’t make any sense.

Chicago Blackhawks Sign Chris Kunitz, Cam Ward, Brandon Manning

The Chicago Blackhawks have signed three players immediately after free agency began, inking Chris Kunitz, Cam Ward and Brandon Manning. Kunitz and Ward will get one-year deals, while Manning has signed a two-year contract. Ward’s deal will pay $3MM and include a full no-trade clause.

Kunitz, who spent last season with Tampa Bay Lightning on their shutdown line, provides the Blackhawks with a veteran defensive presence, who still seems to be successful even at age 38. He, along with Ryan Callahan and Cedric Paquette, were responsible for shutting down teams’ top lines and were quite successful at it. The line was also adept at scoring as well as Kunitz scored 13 goals and totaled 29 points last season with Tampa Bay. The veteran also has lots of playoff success with his time with the Pittsburgh Penguins as he played for the franchise for nine years, winning three Stanley Cup titles.

Ward was less of a secret as the team had been rumored to be close to a deal with him for a few days already. The 13-year veteran, who played all his years in Carolina, moved into a backup role last year as he helped mentor former Blackhawk Scott Darling. However, despite that role, he still managed to play 43 games for the Hurricanes. The 34-year-old didn’t thrive as he finished with a 2.73 GAA and a .906 save percentage, but his experience and ability to handle a big load was critical for the Blackhawks who struggled after starter Corey Crawford went down for the season with a head injury in December last year. The team attempted to move forward with Anton Forsberg and Jeff Glass as their two goaltenders, but couldn’t make that work. Ward should provide more stability for the Blackhawks now.

Manning adds more defensive depth for the Blackhawks as the former Philadelphia Flyers defenseman has continued to increase his production over the course of his career as he scored seven goals and 19 points last season in 65 games and even played a more safety-conscious game this past season. However, his numbers also indicate that he’s just an adequate defender and is likely to fill the team’s need for bottom-six defenders.

Ryan Callahan Out Five Months Following Shoulder Surgery

The Tampa Bay Lightning let some coaches go today, and now have announced that they’ll likely be without Ryan Callahan for the beginning of the season as well. Callahan underwent surgery today on his shoulder, and will be out for approximately five months.

It’s been a rough few seasons for Callahan, who has fallen completely out of touch with the 20-goal, 40-point player of his youth. The former New York Rangers forward had just 18 points this season as he continued to battle injury and found himself on the fourth line. Still an effective energy player and penalty killer, he nevertheless is one of the most overpaid players in the league with a current cap hit of $5.8MM. The Lightning don’t seem to mind as Callahan is an effective part of their leadership group, but as they continue to navigate the salary cap it might become a problem.

This injury removes the possibility that Callahan could be bought out, and also likely keeps him out for at least the first month of the season. That makes the summer even tougher for GM Steve Yzerman, who will have to plan for his veteran forward’s eventual return and leave enough cap room to pay him once he comes off long-term injured reserve (if he ever receives that designation in the first place). The Lightning don’t have a ton of key free agents this summer other than J.T. Miller, but are looking at extensions to Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, Yanni Gourde, Ryan McDonagh, Anton Stralman and Jake Dotchin in the summer of 2019.

Still, the focus from today’s surgery will be on Callahan and the work he’ll have to put in to return to the Lightning in time to help their 2018-19 season. The team is expected to be a contender for the Stanley Cup once again, and need as many depth forwards as possible to get through what should be a very competitive Atlantic Division. The Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers should still be competitive, while the Buffalo Sabres and Montreal Canadiens could take big steps forward. Even Detroit and Ottawa could bounce back if things go their way, meaning Tampa Bay can’t afford many more injuries like this, even to the players lower in their lineup.

Callahan’s absence does mean an opportunity for some other player, and the Lightning have several ready to make the leap. Anthony Cirelli likely secured a full-time position on the team with a good stretch run, and others like Boris Katchouk, Taylor Raddysh and Mathieu Joseph could be close to NHL-ready. Even with the team’s recent trade to acquire McDonagh from the New York Rangers, they still have a boatload of prospects that could be impact players in the NHL. The question will be how does the team fit Callahan back in after he returns from injury, especially if a younger player has performed well in his absence.

Injury Updates: Callahan, Capitals, Mangiapane, Suter

Lightning winger Ryan Callahan will undergo shoulder surgery this offseason, the team announced (Twitter link).  The veteran had been out of the lineup on multiple occasions due to shoulder troubles, including two games in the opening round of the postseason against the Devils.  Callahan underperformed relative to his $5.8MM cap hit as he put up just 19 points in 67 regular season games and this operation will all but eliminate the possibility of a contract buyout as injured players are ineligible to be bought out.

Other injury notes from around the league:

  • Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik is fully participating in Washington’s first practice in advance of Monday’s start to the Stanley Cup Final, notes NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti (Twitter link). He missed some time in Game Seven against Tampa Bay after being boarded by Cedric Paquette but it appears there are no lingering effects.  Winger Devante Smith-Pelly, who also was banged up that game, is also skating on a regular line in practice, Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post adds (via Twitter).
  • Flames winger Andrew Mangiapane is on schedule, if not slightly ahead of it, when it comes to his recovery from shoulder surgery, reports Postmedia’s Wes Gilbertson. He went under the knife in mid-March after sustaining the injury in the AHL and is roughly a month away from getting back to on-ice training.  Despite being in the minors at the time, he should have a chance to crack Calgary’s lineup on a full-time basis after holding his own in ten games with the big club this past season.
  • Wild defenseman Ryan Suter is making progress in his recovery from surgery to repair his broken ankle, notes Dane Mizutani of the Pioneer Press. However, he is still several weeks away from putting any weight on that ankle let alone resuming any offseason workouts.  Suter remains optimistic that he’ll be ready to start the season but that’s far from a guarantee.

Injury Notes: Granlund, Hendricks, Hutchinson, Elliott

The Vancouver Canucks took another injury hit when they announced that forward Markus Granlund will be out for a month with an ankle injury, which he suffered Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He landed awkwardly on his ankle after being bumped on the boards by Ryan Callahan.

The 24-year-old Granlund was expected to be a big contributor this season after a breakout season last year when he scored 19 goals. However, that hasn’t been the case this year. He has eight goals so far this year in 53 games and has seen less average ice time as he’s seeing almost a minute less than last year.

As reported earlier, the Canucks recalled Nikolay Goldobin from the Utica Comets of the AHL.

  • The Winnipeg Jets announced they have activated veteran center Matt Hendricks off of injured reserve and placed goaltender Michael Hutchinson on injured reserve to make room for him. Hendricks, who was signed to a one-year deal this offseason, was out with an upper body injury and has missed the past two games. The team’s fourth-line center, Hendricks has put up a solid season with four goals and eight assists. Hutchinson was placed on IR, retroactive to Feb. 6. He was called up to replace backup Steve Mason, who went down with a concussion. However, Hutchinson himself suffered a concussion in a pre-game skate on that date. Eric Comrie is filling in as an emergency backup.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers might be without starting goaltender Brian Elliott again after he had to leave Saturday’s game with a lower-body injury, according to Philly.com’s Sam Carchidi. He actually left the game after the overtime period against Arizona and was replaced by Michal Neuvirth for the shootout. The team only just got Elliott back on Monday from a lower-body injury. Carchidi suspects that the veteran pulled a groin muscle before going down. He will be re-evaluated after tonight’s game against Vegas. The team announced they have recalled Alex Lyons from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms to serve as the backup.

Injury Notes: Couture, Hjalmarsson, Callahan, Compher, Kadri

The San Jose Sharks look like they will be getting one of their top scorers back soon, possibly even tonight, as head coach Peter DeBoer stated center Logan Couture is a game-time decision, according to The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz. In fact, since Couture has been practicing on the team’s power play, Kurz believes that he is probable to play against Dallas tonight.

Couture was reportedly working out in practice yesterday without wearing an orange non-contact jersey, suggesting he could be close to returning. The 28-year-old has missed the past four games with a concussion. He leads the team with 15 goals and is tied for the team lead in points with Joe Thornton with 26. The team, however, has fared well without him as they have won three of those four games Couture has missed.

  • Dave Vest of NHL.com writes that Arizona Coyotes defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson, who has been out with an upper-body injury for more than a month, could be returning to action soon. He practiced with the team Saturday. “He’s actually feeling better,” head coach Rick Tocchet said. “I don’t have an exact time frame, but he’s had some really good days the past couple days.”
  • Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times tweets that Tampa Bay Lightning winger Ryan Callahan was participating in practice with the penalty killing unit today. Smith adds that he believes Callahan will be ready sooner than one week. Callahan has missed the last six games with an upper-body injury. The 32-year-old has just one goal and five assists this year, but is the team’s top penalty killer.
  • BSN Denver’s Adrian Dater tweets that Colorado Avalanche forward J.T. Compher will be out the rest of the week with an upper-body injury and with a week-long bye after that, it’s likely the team won’t see the 22-year-old until Jan. 13. He was injured in Friday’s game against the Islanders. Compher has seven goals and six assists in 31 games this season.
  • Jonas Siegel of The Athletic reports that Toronto Maple Leafs center Nazem Kadri will miss his second-straight game today against Vegas with an upper-body injury he suffered Thursday against Arizona. The 27-year-old has 13 goals so far this season in 38 games.

 

Snapshots: Jets, 2022 Olympics, Lightning, Alt

The Jets are hoping to have defenseman Dustin Byfuglien back in the lineup sometime early next month, reports Postmedia’s Ken Wiebe.  The veteran blueliner has been out since suffering a lower-body injury on December 9th.  He has, however, returned to practice and will be a welcome addition when he gets the green light to return as he has once again logged heavy minutes this season, averaging 23:40 per game.

Still with Winnipeg, rearguard Toby Enstrom has also resumed skating although his return to the lineup is still a little further off.  Jets bench boss Paul Maurice told Wiebe that Enstrom is still on pace to meet his original timetable for a return which should have him getting the okay to play around the third week of January.

Other news and notes from around the hockey world:

  • The NHL is in no rush to discuss participating in future Olympic Games, notes John Wawrow of the Associated Press. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly spoke with IIHF General Secretary Horst Lichtner during yesterday’s outdoor game at the World Juniors and acknowledged he was asked about when the NHL would be ready to talk about participating in the 2022 Games in China.  Daly noted that talks won’t begin until the 2018 tournament ends but didn’t pour cold water on the idea, stating that “Obviously, some of the logistical difficulties we have with South Korea will be the same in China. But maybe there are some opportunities in China that aren’t in South Korea”.
  • Lightning winger Ryan Callahan is on schedule in his recovery from an upper-body injury, reports Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. He was initially expected to miss three-to-four weeks after being injured on December 14th but Callahan has already resumed skating.  He’s expected to accompany Tampa Bay on their upcoming five-game road trip that ends on January 7th and he should be close to getting the green light to return by then.  Smith adds that defenseman Anton Stralman, who missed his second straight game Friday with a lower-body issue, is expected to return to the lineup on Sunday.
  • Flyers defenseman Mark Alt has cleared waivers, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman (Twitter link) was first to report. He’s expected to be assigned to their AHL affiliate in Lehigh Valley where he had gotten off to a nice start to his season, recording nine points in 16 games.  For perspective, he had just 11 points in 40 contests in 2016-17.

Erik Johnson Suspended For Two Games

6:19 PM: Johnson has been suspended for two games, the Department of Player Safety announced (video link).  He will be eligible to return on December 23rd against Arizona.

2:06 PM: The Department of Player Safety tweeted they will hold a hearing today for Colorado Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson for his boarding of Tampa Bay’s Vladislav Namestnikov on Saturday. The incident happened late in the second period as Johnson cross-checked Namestnikov, who fell hard into the boards behind the Colorado net. The veteran defenseman received a slashing minor, a boarding major and a game misconduct at the time.

The Lightning have recently gone through this as the team just lost veteran forward Ryan Callahan after crashing into the boards against the Arizona Coyotes. He was placed on injured reserve and could be out for some time.

“Dangerous play,” said Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper. “You just hold your breath on those. Got a little fortunate with Vladdy, obviously didn’t get as fortunate with Callahan.”

Namestnikov returned in the final period and still managed to log 18:05 of ice time Saturday and seems to be OK. The 25-year-old is having a breakout year as he has 13 goals and 15 assists on the team’s top line alongside Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov.

Johnson refused to comment on the hearing, according to Denver Post’s Mike Chambers.

 

Lightning Notes: Callahan, Conacher, Volkov

On the surface, the loss of Ryan Callahan doesn’t seem too devastating. Afterall, the 32-year-old veteran has just one goal and five assists in 29 games. However, according to Tampa Bay Times’ Joe Smith, the loss is quite significant thanks to his ability to run a penalty kill unit as well as the leadership he provides on and off the ice.

Smith announced yesterday that Callahan will be out indefinitely after crashing into the boards hard during Thursday’s game against Arizona. He will be evaluated in three to four weeks, which means the team could be without him for considerably more time than that. Callahan already missed all but 18 games last season with hip issues. Asked how the team will replace him, coach Jon Cooper wasn’t overly confident.

“I don’t know if anyone can,” Cooper said. “He’s such a big part inside our room. The leadership core has got to bind together, and it’s one of those situations where he’ll still be around our team, won’t be in our lineup. He’s a big loss because he’s kind of a heart and soul guy for our team. So we’ve got to regroup and move on without him for a few weeks.”

The team will likely turn to J.T. Brown or Cory Conacher to fill that void, but the penalty kill could be affected. Conacher filled in for Callahan after he went down and Brown is expected to play in his stead today.

  • One sidebar that Smith notes is that Conacher’s role might now have changed. Conacher, who cleared waivers at the start of the season, might not if he were waived a second time. The 28-year-old center has only played in seven games and was likely a candidate to send back to Syracuse soon. Once he hits 10 games, the team would be required to place him on waivers if they want to send him down to the AHL, so sending him down before he reaches 10 games would have been preferred. Now, with a Callahan’s injury, the team might be forced to keep him beyond the 10 games and risk losing him. Conacher has two goals and an assist in those seven games this season.
  • Smith also writes that if the Callahan injury lasts longer than the three weeks, the team is more than capable of trading for a winger to replace him. However, according to Smith, that would be more likely in the case that Callahan is out much longer than anticipated.
  • In another article, Smith interviews Syracuse Crunch coach Benoit Groulx on a number of issues, but did ask about one of the team’s top prospects in Alexander  Volkov, the team’s second-round pick in the 2017 draft, who almost made the team out of training camp this year. The belief is he could be ready for the NHL later this season. “It’s not about ‘if,’ it’s more about when (he’s in the NHL), Groulx said. “He’s got the size, he’s got the speed, he’s got all the skills. He’s very deceptive for the opposition. You believe he’s slowing down and all of a sudden he’s got a second gear. He can beat you inside, can beat you outside. He’s got a good shot, good vision, good hockey sense. He’s got a lot of tools in his box.”
