Minor Transactions: 11/23/17

Even though there aren’t any games today in the National Hockey League, the movement up and down from the minor leagues never stops. We’ll keep track of all the day’s transactions right here.

  • The Edmonton Oilers have sent Ryan Stanton to the AHL, after just a single day with the club. Stanton was up with the team but didn’t dress for last night’s game against the Detroit Red Wings, as he waits to make his Edmonton debut. The veteran of 120 NHL games cleared waivers at the beginning of the month, so can be sent up and down for the time being without needing them again.
  • The Arizona Coyotes have called up goaltender Marek Langhamer on an emergency basis, after starter Antti Raanta was forced from last night’s game with an upper-body injury. Langhamer has one NHL appearance under his belt, but has played well in limited action for AHL Tucson this year. Scott Wedgewood is expected to start in Raanta’s absence.
  • Another day, another transaction for Julius Honka, who has been recalled once again by the Dallas Stars. The promising young defenseman was sent down just yesterday by the team when they needed some help up front in case of injury. Curtis McKenzie and Mike McKenna have both been sent to the AHL in a corresponding move.
  • Samuel Blais has been recalled by the St. Louis Blues, potentially giving the 21-year old another shot at the NHL. Blais made his debut for the club earlier in the season, recording his first NHL point just over a month ago. The sixth-round pick has flourished offensively since the Blues drafted him in 2014, and has 13 points in 11 games for the San Antonio Rampage this season in the AHL.

Snapshots: Three Stars, Marner, Hill

The NHL released its “Three Stars of the Week” today, and after Alex Ovechkin was #1 a week ago, Nikolaj Ehlers takes home the title this time around. Ehlers scored five goals and two assists in just three games, including sending Jets fans home happy with two game-winners. The 21-year old Dane is looking even better than last year when he broke out with 64 points, and more than deserved of the seven-year, $42MM extension he signed earlier this month.

Auston Matthews and Nicklas Backstrom rounded out the three stars, after impressive performances of their own. Backstrom is currently tied for the NHL lead in points with 11, including six on the powerplay already. With Ovechkin looking determined to get back to the 50-goal club this year, Backstrom will certainly continue to rack up points. Speaking of offense, Matthews’ four-goal week included a few highlight reel tallies as the 20-year old Maple Leafs forward continues to show off his incredible skill set. The Maple Leafs wouldn’t be sitting at 4-1 without his two overtime winners.

  • Speaking of the 4-1 Maple Leafs, head coach Mike Babcock tinkered with the lines today in practice. According to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet, Babcock had Mitch Marner practicing on the fourth line with Matt Martin and Dominic Moore. Connor Brown was the recipient of a promotion, moving up into Marner’s spot alongside Tyler Bozak. Though Maple Leafs’ Twitter immediately went into panic mode, but Babcock gave a quick explanation to reporters including Kristen Shilton of TSN: “Let’s not read too much into this. Their line wasn’t going. Tie goes to the veteran.” That veteran would be James van Riemsdyk on the other wing, who continues to struggle in the defensive zone despite his six points in five games.
  • The Arizona Coyotes have sent Marek Langhamer to the AHL and recalled Adin Hill. The goalie swap comes after a 22-save shutout by Hill for the Tucson Roadrunners on Saturday night, and could be a move just to get both goalies some work. Langhamer hadn’t suited up for a game yet in the NHL, and the team likely wants him to stay fresh during the season. We saw a similar situation last year in Columbus after the Blue Jackets waived Curtis McElhinney. Anton Forsberg and Joonas Korpisalo flip-flopped constantly between the two leagues thanks to their waiver-exempt statuses, something the Coyotes could do as well. While Antti Raanta continues to nurse a lower-body injury, Louis Domingue looks to get the lion’s share of the work for the Coyotes.

Raanta Out, Langhamer Recalled On Emergency Basis

It’s been a bumpy start to Antti Raanta’s tenure in Arizona. The performance of the former New York Rangers backup hasn’t been bad, but after missing the season opener and failing to pick up a win in his three starts since, Raanta is sidelined once again. The new Coyotes starter did not return to last night’s game against the Detroit Red Wings after the first period and after the game, coach Rick Tocchet told AZ Central’s Sarah McLellan that Raanta was not struggling with the same issues that plagued him in the preseason and kept him out of Game 1, but instead has suffered a new injury.

In response, the Coyotes today have made an emergency recall of Marek Langhamer from the AHL’s Tuscon Roadrunners. Arizona has to be ready to host the Boston Bruins tomorrow night and it seems that time table was too soon for Raanta. Louis Domingue is expected to start, as he did the season opening 5-4 loss, with Langhamer as the backup. Raanta’s absence is indefinite as of now, so the Coyotes will have to roll with that duo for the time being. Domingue, who struggled most of last season and has been worse in a small sample size thus far in 2017-18, and Langhamer, who has just 16 minutes of NHL experience, do not make the most threatening duo.

Meanwhile, the team also demoted forward Emerson Etem as they continue to look for the right mix on the roster. If Raanta is in net and performing to his potential, the Coyotes have more wiggle room in their pace of play. However, Raanta has either been absent or dealing with lingering injuries so far and nine goals in four games is not going to cut it while Raanta remains off the ice or off his game. Arizona needs more from a revamped defense that has combined for one goal and six points thus far and needs to find secondary scoring up front beyond Max Domi and rookie Clayton Keller. If the ’Yotes can’t pick up their scoring, the current goaltending woes could extend their winless streak further and further into the new season.

Final Training Camp Cuts: 10/03/17

Hockey is back. Tomorrow night the NHL will begin its 2017-18 season and the long wait will be over. Today, however, teams have one last job to do: reduce their roster to a cap-compliant 23 players by 5pm EST. Several teams are already there, but many have one or two more cuts to make. None of this means those players can’t be called back up quickly, but these are the rosters teams will head into opening night with. We’ll keep you up to date right here with all the official final transactions.

Snapshots: Okposo, Langhamer, Olympics

Kyle Okposo’s season ended abruptly last year after a March 27th game, with the Buffalo Sabres’ prized offseason acquisition ending up in a hospital ICU just a few days later. It was a scary time for Buffalo fans and teammates alike, but Okposo is on the road to recovery and played in a game for Da Beauty League last week—his first game action in almost four months.

Now Okposo wants to explain exactly what happened and thank his fans for the outpouring of support that came his way. Okposo pens a letter for NHL.com outlining the negative reaction he had to medicine meant to help him sleep, and a drastic weight loss that followed—he was down under 200 lbs for the first time since he was 17. He says he’s healthy now and will be back playing for the Sabres next season, excited to get started under new GM Jason Botterill and coach Phil Housley.

  • The Arizona Coyotes have signed Marek Langhamer to a one-year two-way contract according to Craig Morgan of AZ Sports. Langhamer made his NHL debut last season in relief of Mike Smith after the Arizona starter had to come out of the game following the league’s new concussion protocol. He made seven of eight saves at the end of the game but is still a long way away from making an NHL impact. The Coyotes, with Antti Raanta set to take over as the lead goaltender and Louis Domingue coming back in a secondary role, will see what they have with that duo before making a decision long-term on where their future in net lies. With Langhamer signed, only Anthony Duclair remains as a restricted free agent for the Coyotes.
  • According to Arpon Basu of NHL.com, Hockey Canada has a press conference scheduled for tomorrow to announce “its plan for the 2017-18 Canada National Men’s Team.” That would presumably be an announcement of how it will select the roster for the upcoming Olympics, which will not feature NHL players for the first time since 1994. In that tournament a Peter Forsberg-led Swedish team took home gold (on one of the most famous shootout dekes of all-time), just before the young star would enter the league. That tournament would also introduce the world to Paul Kariya, who had starred at the University of Maine, but used a season with the Canadian National Team as a springboard for his hall of fame NHL career.

The two-year, $3.6MM deal that the Senators gave to winger Ryan Dzingel on Friday came together rather quickly.  Speaking with Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen, GM Pierre Dorion noted that the contract came together in a little under an hour.  The compromise was struck when Dzingel lowered his request for the salary in the first year while the Sens moved off their hard-line number in the second season.  The way the contract is structured ($1.5MM in 2017-18 and $2.1MM in 2018-19) sets up Dzingel for a $2.1MM qualifying offer in the summer of 2019.

  • After inking winger Jordan Martinook to a two-year, $3.6MM contract and officially re-signing Tyler Gaudet to a one-year pact earlier today, the Coyotes have two remaining restricted free agents in winger Anthony Duclair and goalie Marek Langhamer. While there’s still some work to be done in getting Duclair’s deal (expected to be a short-term bridge contract) done, Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic reports (Twitter link) that the team is close to inking Langhamer.  The 23-year-old spent most of the season at the minor league level, getting into 32 games between Arizona’s AHL and ECHL affiliates but made one NHL appearance this past season.
  • While the Islanders have yet to sign captain John Tavares to a long-term extension, Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post cautions that there’s little cause for concern yet. It’s believed that Tavares is looking to see what the roster looks like closer to the start of the season (if not later) as well as their arena situation before committing to a new deal and Tavares is being kept in the loop on all offseason decisions.  It’s worth noting that GM Garth Snow still has all of the draft picks from the Travis Hamonic trade at his disposal which could be used to make another impact addition up front which could make re-signing that much more appealing for Tavares.
