Joe Snively Clears Waivers, Assigned To Hershey Bears

December 8: According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, Snively has cleared waivers. Snively will head to the Hershey Bears, Washington’s AHL affiliate, says Samantha Pell of the Washington Post. No new players were placed on waivers on Sunday, Friedman added.

December 7: With Nicklas Backstrom and Tom Wilson set to return tomorrow, at least one waiver placement was expected from the Capitals today.  That has come as NorthStar Bets’ Chris Johnson reports (Twitter link) that Washington has placed winger Joe Snively on waivers.

The 27-year-old saw his first NHL action last season and certainly made the most of it, notching four goals and three assists in just 12 games with the Caps.  He also was quite productive at the minor league level with AHL Hershey, collecting 15 goals and 23 helpers in 35 contests with the Bears.  That was enough for GM Brian MacLellan to commit a two-year, one-way extension worth $800K per season to Snively, a nice reward for the late bloomer.

However, things haven’t gone as well this season for Snively.  He has been a frequent healthy scratch, suiting up just six times and just once since mid-November.  He has a single assist in those contests while averaging just over 12 minutes a night.  The role he was supposed to fill as a bottom-six offensive contributor has since been filled by early-season signing Sonny Milano and now with Backstrom and Wilson set to return, Washington just can’t afford to keep Snively on the roster any longer.

Despite the limited action and production this season, there is a chance that a team is willing to take a chance on Snively.  With a cap hit that’s just $50K above the league minimum in 2022-23 (and just $25K above the minimum next season), claiming him would be of little risk to even most cap-strapped squads if they’re looking to try someone else in a depth role.  Washington will find out if they’re able to return Snively to Hershey at 1 PM CT on Sunday.

The Washington Capitals could be getting Joe Snively back as a depth option in the next little while, as the injured forward has been sent to the Hershey Bears on an LTIR conditioning loan. Snively is coming back from wrist surgery and will be eligible for the Bears first-round playoff series, should they want to insert him into the lineup.

Of course, while it’s great news for the Bears and their Calder Cup hopes, there is a bigger prize that the Capitals have their eyes on and Snively could potentially help them get there. This is a player that recorded four goals and seven points in his first 12 NHL games, and could potentially step into an offensive role should the Capitals suffer any injuries along the way.

For now, he’ll need to get back up to speed in the AHL. Snively had 38 points in 35 games to start the year with Hershey and should immediately give them another top-line player to help their playoff run. The team had middling success through the second half of the year and ended up going 34-32-10 on the year, good enough for fifth place in the Atlantic Division.

After the Hurricanes got some good news when it came to goaltender Antti Raanta today, it appears things may be looking up even more on the injury front in Carolina.  Sara Civian of The Athletic reports (subscription link) that goaltender Frederik Andersen should be good to go for the playoffs as well.  The 32-year-old suffered an undisclosed injury a week and a half ago with little information revealed from there.  While Civian notes that Andersen isn’t expected to dress for any of Carolina’s games this week, having both him and Raanta available for the postseason will certainly help their chances of a lengthy playoff run.

  • Capitals winger Joe Snively skated for the first time on Sunday after undergoing wrist surgery last month, relays Samantha Pell of the Washington Post. The 26-year-old did well in his first career NHL recall, picking up four goals and three assists before being injured in his 12th game at the end of February.  Nevertheless, Snively did well enough to earn a two-year, one-way extension which he inked last month.  It’s unlikely that Snively will be in Washington’s lineup to start the playoffs but if some injuries strike, he could be an option to suit up.
  • The Rangers have listed forwards Andrew Copp, Kaapo Kakko, and Filip Chytil as game-time decisions for their game on Tuesday against Carolina as they look to stay in the mix for the top spot in the division, notes Ethan Sears of the New York Post. Copp (lower body) and Chytil (undisclosed) were both injured on Thursday while Kakko has been out for a week and a half with a lower-body injury and received a week-to-week designation at the time.  Even if they don’t play on Tuesday, all three were full participants in practice which bodes well for their availability when the playoffs start next week.

The Washington Capitals have completed a bit of offseason business ahead of time, signing Joe Snively to a two-year extension. The new deal will carry an average annual value of $800K.

Snively, 26, was one of many mid-twenties players who could have become a Group VI unrestricted free agent in the offseason. This move avoids that entirely and will keep the forward under contract through 2023-24. Brian MacLellan, Capitals’ general manager, released a statement on the deal:

Joe is a versatile, skilled forward, and we are extremely pleased with his development this season. Joe has worked hard and put himself in a position to earn a spot on our team. It is a great testament to him and all the local youth hockey coaches and programming in our area that guided him along through this journey.

It’s been only 12 games so far for the minor league veteran, but Snively has been excellent whenever he made it into the lineup for the Capitals. With four goals and seven points, despite averaging fewer than 12 minutes a night, there is at least some hope that he can transition into a regular spot moving forward. Even if he doesn’t continue at that pace–one that would mean scoring 27 goals and 48 points in a full 82-game season–an $800K means that Snively can be moved in and out without affecting the Capitals’ cap situation much over the next two years.

In fact, had he made it to free agency there may well have been other teams willing to pay him even more, depending on what happens in the home stretch this season. Undrafted, the 5’9″ forward has shown incredible growth over the last few seasons, including now scoring at a better than point-per-game pace in the AHL. That growth has been rewarded with this new contract, though he still has plenty of work to do to establish himself as a legitimate NHL option.
