Snapshots: Ryan, Ottawa Injuries, Rutta, Coreau

Partway through the season, it seemed like a given that Senators GM Pierre Dorion would approach Bobby Ryan about waiving his no-move clause for the upcoming expansion draft.  However, after a postseason where he was dominant, Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun believes that he is now a must-protect player.

Ryan led all Ottawa forwards in scoring in the playoffs with 15 points (6-9-15) in 19 games and Brennan suggests that the 30 year old is now starting to better grasp head coach Guy Boucher’s system, something he said he was having some difficulty with earlier in the season.  However, it’s also hard to overlook the fact he has five years left on a deal that carries a cap hit of $7.25MM.  The Sens are a lower budget team and Ryan has yet to surpass 56 points in any of his four seasons with the team; freeing up that money would give them some flexibility heading into the rest of the offseason.

At the end of the day, despite his postseason success, the contract may be enough of a deterrent for Vegas anyway and if that’s the case, Dorion would be wise to see if Ryan would be willing to waive his no-move, allowing the team to protect an additional forward.

Elsewhere around the hockey world:

  • Still with the Sens, blueliner Mark Borowiecki has a torn labrum in his shoulder but will not require surgery this summer, reports Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun (Twitter links). Fellow defender Cody Ceci had also been dealing with injury issues; he mentioned to reports (including Garrioch) that he played with a broken finger more than once during the course of the year.
  • Czech defenseman Jan Rutta is leaning towards signing with the Blackhawks, Fox Sports Midwest Andy Strickland reports via Twitter. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun tweets that a final decision could come this weekend and that six teams are in the mix.  The 26 year old had a breakout season with Piráti Chomutov of the Czech Extraliga in 2016-17, recording a career high 32 points in 46 regular season games while tacking on another 13 points in 17 postseason contests.  He recently suited up for the Czechs at the World Championships, taking part in eight games while logging 15:22 of ice time per game.  Edmonton and Calgary are among the other teams who have shown interest in Rutta’s services.
  • With Detroit goalie Jared Coreau becoming waiver eligible next season and Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek on the roster, MLive’s Ansar Khan suggests that the Wings could carry three goalies to start next season if no one is moved over the summer. Coreau had a good start to his NHL stint last season but struggled in his final few outings which, coupled with his waiver situation, wouldn’t give him a lot of trade value at this time.  Khan notes that the team has gone this way in the past when they were worried about losing Joey MacDonald at the start of the year back in 2006-07 and already had Dominik Hasek and Chris Osgood in the fold.  (They wound up waiving MacDonald later in the season, losing him to Boston.)

Coreau’s AHL Playoff Success Creating Detroit Goalie Logjam

The Detroit Red Wings like what they see in the play of prospect goaltender Jared Coreau, writes Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press. The 25-year-old goalie is dominating in the AHL playoffs as he leads the Grand Rapid Griffins in their playoff run. He stopped 26 of 27 stops Saturday to win Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals against the San Jose Barracuda. In fact, he made 16 saves in the final period to stave off six Barracuda power play opportunities. He has aided the Griffins to an 8-1 record in the playoffs and could be a prime candidate to take over backup duties in Detroit next season.

The team currently has veteran Jimmy Howard in net as the starter and 25-year-old Petr Mrazek as the backup. However, Coreau spent three months with Detroit after Howard suffered a knee injury and played well in spots, even getting the nod to start the Jan. 1 outdoor game against Toronto over Mrazek. His 3.47 GAA in 14 games wasn’t always pretty, but there were shining moments through his stint at the pro level as well.

As reported a week ago, the Red Wings may be looking to move on from the 33-year-old Howard, who has two more years at $5.29MM. Despite his 3.04 GAA in 50 games this season, many believe that Mrazek is ready to move up into a starting role and Coreau’s recent success will only aid the Red Wings endeavors to find a taker for Howard’s contract.

Atlantic Notes: Filppula, Coreau, DiDomenico

When Valtteri Filppula’s name started to come up in trade talks between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning, he received a phone call from Mike Babcock. That’s what Chris Johnston of Sportsnet writes in his newest article, detailing everything that went on behind the scenes on deadline day surrounding Filppula. He ended up talking with Babcock for a while, before ultimately choosing not to waive his no-trade clause. It was “nothing against Toronto” as the veteran center turned down the chance to go play for his former coach; the two spent years together in Detroit, even winning the Stanley Cup in 2008.

Filppula ended up going to Philadelphia, for whom he will suit up against the Maple Leafs tonight. He just wanted to stick with the list he’d created before the season, and as Johnston notes, likely saw the treatment of other veteran players since heading to Toronto. Brooks Laich, Colin Greening and Milan Michalek have all been buried in the minors this season, with Eric Fehr not getting into a game since coming over from Pittsburgh.

  • The Detroit Red Wings have sent Jared Coreau back down to the AHL after activating Jimmy Howard yesterday. The young netminder was shelled last night against Boston, playing just 13:32 of the game before getting the hook. In 14 games for the Red Wings this season, Coreau has just an .887 save percentage. He does however have two shutouts during his time in the NHL, and will look to build off that next season should Howard be moved this summer.
  • Chris DiDomenico will make his NHL debut tonight for the Ottawa Senators after signing just over a week ago. The 28-year old forward that has dominated the Swiss leagues for the past few years is ready to make his mark on North American ice. A former sixth-round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs, he hasn’t played on this continent since 2012. The Senators had gone with seven defensemen last night, but with Mark Borowiecki injured, they’ll insert DiDomenico in his place.

Jimmy Howard Recalled From Conditioning Stint

The Detroit Red Wings today announced the recall of Jimmy Howard from his latest conditioning stint with the Grand Rapids Griffins. Howard had been sent down on March 4th and played two games for the AHL squad, allowing just two goals on 54 shots including a shutout of the San Antonio Rampage last night. Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press reports that Jared Coreau, up in Howard’s absence will return to the AHL on Thursday or Friday.

Howard hasn’t played in an NHL contest since December 20th thanks to several setbacks during his rehab of a lower-body injury. Before the injury, the 32-year old netminder was off to the best start of his career, carrying a .934 save percentage through his first 17 games of the season. Despite seemingly losing the number one job to Petr Mrazek last season, Howard looked re-energized and ready to prove he could still be a starter in the NHL. Now he’ll have another handful of games to prove it again.

The goaltender’s $5.29MM cap-hit is a tough price to pay for the Red Wings as they turn to Mrazek in the crease, meaning Howard will likely be available again this summer. Whether any team wants to take on that much is still unknown, though once the season is over the Red Wings could retain part of his salary going forward. Despite being last in the Eastern conference, Detroit is actually in quite a tight cap situation as they head into next season. With Tomas Tatar and Andreas Athanasiou both needing substantial raises, they will have almost no room to add anything to help the squad.

While the cap is set to go up slightly for next season, Detroit is a long way from being a contender with their current roster and will likely have to re-think how they’ve built their forward group. While they sold off any expiring assets at the deadline this year, it wasn’t really enough to hit a full reset button. Showcasing Howard for a possible trade in the offseason would be a big part of starting their rebuild.

Red Wings Assign Jimmy Howard On Conditioning Stint

The Detroit Red Wings have assigned goaltender Jimmy Howard to their AHL affiliate in Grand Rapids for a conditioning stint, the team announced on Saturday.

It’s been a tough stretch for Howard, who hasn’t played in the NHL since December 20, 2016. He left that game midway after a pileup in his crease. Howard missed several weeks before returning. He appeared in two conditioning games with Grand Rapids, but was injured in the second game and has been out since. He’s eligible to spend two weeks with the Griffins.

Detroit could definitely use Howard back in their lineup. He leads the NHL with a 0.934 SV% and is second with a 1.96 GAA. It’s been a bounce-back year for Howard; this is the first time his numbers have been above league average since 2012-13. That season earned him his current contract, which pays him $5.29MM for two more seasons.

Howard subsequently lost the starters job to Petr Mrazek until this season. Mrazek has struggled with a 0.903 SV% and 2.95 GAA in 39 games. Third-stringer Jared Coreau hasn’t been great either, playing in 13 games with an 0.893 SV% and 3.27 GAA.

The playoffs are out of reach for the Red Wings, but Howard’s return to form could inspire the Vegas Golden Knights to select him in the expansion draft, clearing valuable cap space for the Red Wings to rebuild with. Despite his poor numbers this season, Mrazek is just 24-years-old compared to Howard, who’s 32. Detroit would likely prefer to keep Mrazek and hope he returns to his prior form.

Minor Transactions: 02/22/17

It’s not just trades that are completed in the days prior to the deadline, but a lot of roster movement to get team’s ready for the big day. We’ll have all the day’s minor transactions right here, so keep checking back.

  • The Detroit Red Wings have sent Jared Coreau to the minors on a conditioning stint, likely meaning Jimmy Howard is ready to rejoin the team from his latest setback. Coreau has gotten into 13 games for the Red Wings this season, recording an .893 save percentage and 3.27 goals against average. The 25-year old will return to the minors where he has played exceptionally well, with three straight seasons of a save percentage .922 or above.
  • After falling the the Maple Leafs in overtime last night, the Winnipeg Jets have sent Julian Melchiori and Brandon Tanev to the AHL. The Jets start their bye-week today, and with it the usual roster movement so that young players can continue their development. Expect both to be back with the NHL squad in a few days.
  • The New York Islanders have moved Shane Prince to injured reserve, retroactive to February 12th and called up Bracken Kearns on an emergency basis. Kearns is an AHL veteran who has 40 points this season. The 35-year old will likely take a spot of Cal Clutterbuck who exited last night’s game.
  • According to Arthur Staple of Newsday the Islanders have also signed Connor Jones to a two-way deal for the rest of this year. He was on an AHL deal, but this will allow him to be called up if they need him down the stretch.  The deal will pay him the league minimum $575K in the NHL and $75K at the minor league level, per CapFriendly.
  • The Anaheim Ducks have brought up winger Nic Kerdiles from the AHL. He’s spent time with the Ducks before, but has never gotten into an NHL game. Drafted in the second round in 2012, he hasn’t developed into quite the player the Ducks had hoped for and has struggled with a concussion this season. At 23, we’ll see if he makes his debut before the Ducks hit their bye week on Sunday.
  • The Arizona Coyotes have sent Marek Langhamer back to the AHL after just a few days with the NHL club. Louis Domingue is travelling with the club and looks ready to get back into some games for the Coyotes. Langhamer came on in relief of Mike Smith on Monday after the all-star goaltender took a hit to the head and had to leave to go through the concussion protocol.
  • After scoring two goals this morning (yes, morning) against the Toronto Marlies, Cory Conacher is on his way to the NHL. The diminutive forward has been recalled by the Tampa Bay Lightning as insurance for Jonathan Drouin, who was absent from today’s practice. Though it was called a “maintenance day” for Drouin, you can never be too careful. Conacher is an established minor league scorer, and actually has 60 points in the NHL but has never found much consistency at the higher level.

With the trade deadline quickly approaching, we will be profiling several players in the weeks ahead that are likely to be dealt by March 1st.

Another trade candidate, another Red Wing. This time, we’ll look at veteran netminder Jimmy Howard, who has been the subject of trade rumors since last summer.

Contract

Six-year, $31.750MM deal. Three years remaining. $5.291MM AAV.

2016-17

In a season where the Red Wings have struggled tremendously, Howard has been the antidote to a team hemorrhaging goals. While Petr Mrazek was expected to be the stalwart in net, it’s been Howard and rookie Jared Coreau picking up the slack for Detroit. Howard, however, has succumbed to injury twice this season, but is close to coming back. The real question is which Howard will return? The dominant one? Or the Howard of seasons past, who has struggled to find his groove following injury?

Potential Suitors

When healthy, Howard has been extremely good for the Red Wings. This season alone, on a team that is dreadful at both ends of the ice, Howard has stolen games while keeping the Wings in games they should have been out of early.

Dallas is one team to look at, especially since former Detroit assistant general manager Jim Nill is there. Though the Stars are trying to figure out what they are, Howard could be an asset with two years remaining and numbers that are certainly better than that of what the Stars currenly have in Antti Niemi and Kari Lehtonen. But outside of familiarity, there are few teams on the radar.

While Howard could fetch offers, there is one key reason he will scare off potential buyers.

Likelihood Of A Trade

Howard’s contract is a hinderance to any team interested. Still locked in for two seasons with over $10MM owed, few teams are going to bite on a deal that involves a strong performing, but injury prone goalie. While Howard’s name has been mentioned before, the Wings couldn’t peddle him elsewhere last summer.  There are also rumblings that Detroit could be growing impatient with Mrazek, and may dangle Mrazek as trade bait. But that could be speculation in a season that has been disastrous for a franchise not used to losing as often–and as badly–as they have been.

Allen’s Latest: All Star Game, Detroit’s Youth, Top 25 Of All Time

USA Today’s Kevin Allen wonders if the NHL has found the right formula for the All-Star game. A struggle for many years to make a dent in ratings or generate interest, Allen writes that last year’s shift to a division specific, three-on-three battle was a shot in the arm for the sport and gave NBC its highest ratings for an All-Star game since they signed on with the NHL for coverage. Players also bought into the format, as evidenced by a quote from NBC Sports Executive Producer Sam Flood recalled that one player said, “’I want to be out there. I’m so mad that I’m leaving this building and not playing to win this event.” Flood felt that was “cool” and it showed a turnaround in the perception of the All-Star Game.

More from Allen:

  • Though Detroit is having a rough season, the youth carrying the team has been a positive sign. Allen writes that the production from “kids” Anthony Mantha, Andreas Athanasiou, Xavier Ouellet, and Jared Coreau has gone a long way in breathing some life into what’s been a stale season in Hockeytown. It also shows that Detroit has continued to draft talent that can produce at the NHL level. Though the playoffs could be missed, a silver lining is certainly the development and contribution from the younger players. Allen notes that while the Red Wings have struggled to score goals this season, it’s been the emergence of Mantha and Athanasiou that have given Detroit an uptick in scoring. More interesting, will be if the Red Wings continue to rely on their youth, with a roster and philosophy that always seem to favor veterans.
  • Allen also lists his top 25 of all time and his #1 and #2 are not shocking with Gordie Howe narrowly edging Wayne Gretzky. Bobby Orr, Mario Lemieux, and Maurice Richard round out Allen’s top five.

Atlantic Notes: Yandle, Gionta, Duchene, Coreau

Although things haven’t gone the way the Florida Panthers expected this season, GM and interim head coach Tom Rowe is quite pleased with the play of their key offseason acquisition, defenseman Keith Yandle, he told Harvey Fialkov of the Sun-Sentinel:

“He’s fit in terrific. He’s such a positive influence on our young guys and in our locker room in general. We targeted him as our No. 1 free agent signing [because we] thought he’d really complement our forwards.”

The team was hoping he’d add another dimension to their power play but injuries to Jonathan Huberdeau, Nick Bjugstad, and Aleksander Barkov has resulted in a drop from 2015-16’s 16.9% success rate.  However, Yandle, who signed a six year, $44.45MM contract after Florida traded for his negotiating rights, leads all Panther blueliners in points with 23 and is tied for the team lead in assists with 20 (while also tying for the team lead in power play points) so their struggles can’t all be attributed to him.

Elsewhere in the Atlantic:

  • Although he recently turned 38 and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent in July, Sabres captain Brian Gionta isn’t planning on retiring at the end of the season, writes John Vogl of the Buffalo News. The veteran added that he isn’t worried about his situation heading into the trade deadline either.  It’s worth noting that Gionta doesn’t have a full no-trade clause this year as he has a five team list that he can be traded to, per CapFriendly.  Gionta may not be the top six forward he was with New Jersey and Montreal but with 10 goals and 22 points on the season, he can still be a productive bottom six option on a contending team if he’s moved by March 1st.
  • While the Senators haven’t been linked to Colorado center Matt Duchene, Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen argues that they should make a run at acquiring him. Not only would he replace Clarke MacArthur who is out for the year with a concussion, his addition would also likely help their attendance, where they rank in the bottom ten league-wide.  Warren adds that the Ottawa’s window to win revolves around blueliner Erik Karlsson, whose contract expires after 2018-19 so they should be thinking about adding and winning now while he’s still on a below-market contract.  Duchene’s contract, by the way, also expires following the 2018-19 season.
  • Red Wings goalie Jared Coreau had an awful rookie professional season in 2013-14, winning just one of 25 appearances. It was there that he first met current Detroit bench boss Jeff Blashill who was very direct in telling him what needed to be done if he was to succeed as a pro, writes Nick Cotsonika of NHL.com.  Coreau credits his success since then to Blashill’s bluntness, which resulted in him losing weight, seeing a sports psychologist, and undergoing special vision training.  Having won five of his first eight decisions, the 25 year old has held his own since being recalled to cover for Jimmy Howard who has been out since late December with an MCL sprain.
