Minor Transactions: 9/26/18

As some players move from NHL camp to AHL camp or are released from tryouts, it can open up new opportunities for the coming season. Everyone would prefer to land with a big league team, but that simply doesn’t happen. Instead, they embrace their new role and the challenge of getting to the top level. There are still gaps to fill on many teams throughout the minor leagues and Europe. Keep up with all of those moves today right here:

  • The AHL’s Belleville Senators, Ottawa’s affiliate, has inked a pair of veteran minor leaguers. The team announced that goaltender Jake Paterson and forward Francois Beauchemin have earned contracts. Paterson, a former Detroit Red Wings prospect, has played almost exclusively in the ECHL since turning pro three years ago and has struggled in his short AHL stints. Paterson will almost certainly return to the ECHL this year, with recently announced affiliate the Brampton Beast. However, it makes sense for Belleville to add some experienced depth, given that Mike McKenna could see NHL action this year should aging Ottawa starter Craig Anderson get hurt and AHL option Filip Gustavsson is in his first season in North America. Beauchemin, not be confused with newly retired defenseman Francois Beauchemin, had a tough first year at the pro level in 2017-18 but was reliable producer and two-way player for years in the QMJHL. They’ll give him another shot to show he can hack it in the AHL.
  • Emile Poirier is back in the Calgary system, at least temporarily. NHL.com’s Patrick Williams reports that the Flames’ 2013 first-round pick has been invited to camp by their AHL affiliate, the Stockton Heat. Poirier was not qualified this off-season after another disappointing campaign in the minors. The talented forward struggled with consistency throughout his entry-level contract and a lack of production convinced the Flames to move on without him. It seems that the Heat are not as willing to let go though. While there are many intriguing veteran names already slotted for roles in Stockton, as well as other camp invites like Logan Shaw and Gilbert Brule, the familiarity that Poirier could bring to team that has seen much changeover could earn him a roster spot. Former University of Denver star goalie Tanner Jaillet and long-time NHL grinder Ryan White were also included on the camp roster for Stockton.
  • Another interesting camp invite is journeyman defenseman Tim Erixon. The AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins announced today that they have added Erixon to their camp roster, bringing back a player who excelled on their blue line from 2015 to 2017 on a two-year, two-way contract with Pittsburgh. Erixon spent last year on AHL contracts with the Binghamton Devils and Springfield Thunderbirds and was again a productive player. Erixon, 27, is a former first-round pick with ample ability who simply struggled to compete at the NHL level and may never reach that level again, but has proven to be dependable on the AHL stage. It would be no surprise to see him stick with the junior Penguins.
  • The Los Angeles Kings have recalled four recently-demoted players from the AHL’s Ontario Reign camp. The Kings announced that forwards Sheldon Rempal, a free agent addition out of Clarkson University, Drake Rymsha, a first-year pro, Matt Luff and Boko Imama, Reign veterans, have re-joined the team. It seems likely that one or more will suit up for the Kings tonight when L.A. squares off with the Anaheim Ducks.

Familiar Names Fill Calgary Flames Training Camp Roster

The Calgary Flames announced their training camp roster today, and there are plenty of players on professional tryout agreements that will be familiar to NHL fans. We had already heard reports of Jeff Glass, Viktor Svedberg and Logan Shaw, but they’ll be joined by Philip Samuelsson, Ryan Sproul, Scott Sabourin, Justin Auger, Duncan Siemens and Gilbert Brule. The Flames of course have part of their roster in China to take on the Boston Bruins in two exhibition matches, meaning they needed more bodies than normal

Still, to see the likes of Brule back with an NHL organization is surprising. Originally selected sixth overall in 2005 by the Columbus Blue Jackets, Brule hasn’t played in North America since 2013-14, suiting up in the KHL for the past four seasons. He did however suit up for Canada at the 2018 Winter Olympics, scoring three points in five games to earn a bronze medal.

Brule isn’t the only high draft pick invited, as Siemens was also selected in the first round. The 11th-overall pick by Colorado back in 2011, Siemens never could really crack the NHL and ended up failing to even receive a qualifying offer at the end of last season. The big physical defenseman has simply never been good enough with the puck on his stick to get to the next level, and would have to really impress in training camp to earn a contract with the Flames.

Team Canada Announces Olympic Roster

Though we’ve already heard that one young player has turned down an offer to play for Canada at the upcoming Olympics, many others wouldn’t dream of passing on this chance. Today, Hockey Canada announced their roster for the Games, including many familiar NHL faces. The full roster can be found below:

Snapshots: Three Stars, Team Canada, Junior Snubs

The NHL released its three stars of the week today, with Brayden Schenn leading the group. Schenn has found brilliant success since being traded to St. Louis, already with 37 points in 31 games. Always possessing elite talent, some believed Schenn would never become the dominant presence he was projected to be when the Los Angeles Kings took him fifth-overall. He’s already been traded twice in his career, but looks ready to obliterate his previous career-high of 59 points and become an integral part of any St. Louis success.

Jake Allen and Brian Elliott round out the stars of the week, both posting perfect records and incredible save percentages. Allen and Elliott were teammates just two seasons ago, when the Blues went to just their second Conference Finals in nearly 30 years. With zero Stanley Cup victories in their history, Allen and Schenn will look to change the franchise fortunes this year.

Hockey Canada Names 25 Players To Pre-Olympic Tournament

Hockey Canada has released another roster for a pre-Olympic tournament, this time the Channel One Cup in Moscow from December 13-17. This and the Spengler Cup—which is scheduled for December 26-31 in Switzerland—are the final two tournament looks for Team Canada before they send a roster to Pyeongchang.

We learned earlier today that Jarome Iginla wasn’t going to make it back from his hip injury in time to play in either tournament, making him a long shot for the Olympic squad. This group, which includes many of those who’ve already suited up international for Canada this year, will likely make up most of the eventual roster sent to South Korea. The 25-man team is as follows:

Olympic Preview: Hockey Canada Announces Karjala Cup Roster

The roster for the Karjala Cup has been announced for Team Canada, and it represents a sneak peek at who will likely suit up for the country at the upcoming 2018 Winter Olympics. Canada has joined the tournament—held November 8th-12th in Finland—as a sort of tune-up for the Olympics, and their roster is littered with former NHL players.

Perhaps the most interesting name though is Dylan Sikura, the Chicago Blackhawks prospect who returned to the college ranks this season for his final year. Chicago was willing to sign him this spring after his junior year, but Sikura instead returned to try and win a national championship with Northeastern. A sixth-round pick, Sikura could become a free agent next summer, but is almost guaranteed to sign with the Blackhawks when his year ends. His addition could be big for Chicago down the stretch, as he represents another talented offensive threat.

Snapshots: Alexander Nylander, Jon Gillies, Max Talbot

19-year old winger Alexander Nylander may get his shot in Buffalo this season, according to Ian McLaren of the Score, who spoke with Nylander’s Swedish coach. Nylander was selected 8th overall in last year’s draft, and had a strong season in the AHL with Rochester. He saw action in 4 games for the Sabres, but tallied only one assist. He theoretically has the option to return to the Swedish Hockey League, for AIK, but there has been no indication he will do so. Nylander will have his work cut out for him if he hopes to crack the roster, however. The Sabres filled out their forward depth relatively well this off-season, adding Jason Pominville (right-winger) via trade and Jacob Josefson (right-winger) via free agency. He could likely find a home on the fourth-line, but he would likely benefit from more seasoning if he can’t force a decision outright. His older brother, William Nylander, did need parts of two seasons with the Marlies before he stuck with the Leafs. Alex Nylander’s dynamic offensive skillset is badly needed in Buffalo this season, however, especially when one considers the lean defense they will be trotting out.

  • When Flames’ goalie Jon Gillies was signed to a two-way contract a few weeks ago, many wondered how much that would impact the team’s future plans in net. Gillies had a solid win in his first NHL start last season, but struggled slightly in Stockton. The 6’6 goalie is a third-round pick from 2012, but was solid in Providence and has shown flashes of brilliance at only 23. Gillies will need to string together a solid performance at the AHL level and hope for either Mike Smith or Eddie Lack to falter or fall to injury, as the two acquisitions by GM Brad Treliving put him in an unenviable position. The possibility of a goaltending carousel in Calgary seems more possible than many are willing to admit, especially if Gillies or Tyler Parsons push the issue from the minors with stellar performance. This will only be Gillies’ second pro season, after all, and he has the talent to make things interesting.
  • With the certainty of NHL non-participation in the 2018 Olympics, it opens quite a few doors for players who have left the league for Europe or elsewhere. “Busts” and “has-beens” could make up a large portion of the U.S. and Canadian rosters, it seems. Today in Sochi, numerous ex-NHLers displayed their skills in hopes of impressing those who will choose the 2018 Olympic roster. A miniature tournament is essentially the beginning of the audition to be considered for the selection process. Canada faced off against Russia, and the teams will have friendly contests against one another later in August. According to Tim Wharnsby of CBS Sports, some of those hopefuls for Canada include Max Talbot, Gilbert Brule, and Rob Klinkhammer. Talbot was a gritty winger who clutched two goals against Detroit in Game 7 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals for Pittsburgh. Brule is a former top pick of CBJ who floated from team to team without much success, and Klinkhammer was a fringe bottom-sixer who never truly found a home. Many players of this ilk could claim roster spots, and fans of the sport may have some names from the past resurface to prominence as we approach Pyeongchang.

Overseas Notes: Pirri, Brule, Villacher

Despite some early reports, it remains unclear whether free agent forward Brandon Pirri is leaving the NHL or not. News out of local sources in Switzerland made it sound as if the young scorer had already come to an agreement with the ZSC Lions of the NLA. However, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, one of hockey’s top news-breakers, did some digging today and has doubts about the deal. Friedman believes that Pirri still plans on staying in North America, despite what is likely ample interest from European clubs. Pirri, still just 26 years old, has not been tendered a qualifying offer in back-to-back years, despite racking up 47 points in 121 games with the New York Rangers, Anaheim Ducks, and Florida Panthers over the past two seasons. Before that, Pirri notched a 22-goal season for the Panthers in 2014-15. Yet, often described as a one-dimensional player, Pirri has been unable to find a long-term NHL home. Will he wait out the market or take a minor league deal, as Friedman suggests, or will eventually succumb to the pressure of overseas offers, like that of ZSC, and leave North America?

  • One former NHLer who first turned to the ZSC Lions when he could not find a new NHL team was Gilbert Brule. The sixth overall pick of the 2005 NHL Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets, Brule left for Swtizerland in 2012 after his once-promising career had produced only 95 points in 296 NHL games over seven pro seasons. Brule attempted a comeback the following year, but found a similar lack of success and moved on to the KHL, where he has played ever since. According to a press release from Russian club Traktor Chelyabinsk, Brule is on the move again, but still within the KHL. Traktor has acquired the now 30-year-old forward for cash compensation from Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk. Brule is coming off his best pro season in 2016-17, after posting 42 points in 52 games between Neftekhimik and Medvescak Zagreb. Brule will look to stay hot in the final season of his contract after finishing in the top 25 in points per game last season in the KHL.
  • Brule’s former team, Medvescak Zagreb, has now left the KHL and has re-joined the EBEL, a league based mostly out of Austria, but that includes other European clubs like Zagreb, a Croatian team, and others from the Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary, and Slovenia. While league re-alignment has been a major story for the EBEL, another has been the active off-season for Villacher SV, the lowest-placing Austrian team in 2016-17. In the past two days, Villacher has added arguably the two biggest names of any EBEL signings this summer in Rob Flick and Ben Walter. Flick, a fourth-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010 and a well-regarded enforcer, had been unable to crack an NHL lineup despite solid defensive play and moderate offense in the AHL and ECHL. The 26-year-old finally found his scoring touch with the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays last season, notching 63 points in 60 games and will now look to keep that going with Villacher. Walter, a veteran of lower-level European hockey, was one of the top scorers in the EBEL in 2014-15 with 43 points in 50 games. Walter was a fifth-round selection of the Boston Bruins in 2004, and unlike Flick, saw 24 games of NHL action with the Bruins, New York Islanders, and New Jersey Devils. While Flick and Walter may not be massive names by any means to most North American fans, their relative talent level make them huge acquisitions for Villacher.

Hindsight is an amazing thing, and allows us to look back and wonder “what could have been.” Though perfection is attempted, scouting and draft selection is far from an exact science and sometimes, it doesn’t work out the way teams – or players – intended. For every Patrick Kane, there is a Patrik Stefan.

We’re looking back at the 2005 NHL Draft, which kicked off the salary cap era and ushered in many of the current NHL superstars. The question we’re looking to answer is knowing now what we didn’t know then, how different would this draft look now with the benefit of hindsight?

Here are the results of our redraft so far:

1st Overall: Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins)
2nd Overall: Carey Price (Mighty Ducks of Anaheim)
3rd Overall: Anze Kopitar (Carolina Hurricanes)
4th Overall: Jonathan Quick (Minnesota Wild)
5th Overall: Kris Letang (Montreal Canadiens)

Now we move forward to the sixth pick, which was held by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

To recap how this works:

  • We will go through the 2005 NHL Draft and have our readers select, through a voting process, who they think should have been taken with the selection.
  • The entire first round will be redrafted, spanning picks one through thirty. The new selection is chosen by the majority of votes.

Back in 2005, the Blue Jackets selected Vancouver Giants center Gilbert Brule.  Suffice it to say, that pick did not work out well.  He spent three seasons with Columbus before being dealt to the Oilers for rugged winger Raffi Torres.  After a couple of years there, it was off to Phoenix for a cup of coffee with the Coyotes.  He is currently playing in this third straight KHL season after collecting just 95 points in 299 NHL games.
