Philadelphia Flyers Assign Emil Andrae To The AHL

The Philadelphia Flyers have assigned defenseman Emil Andrae to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League. The move comes as somewhat of a surprise as the 22-year-old Andrae has been solid in 20 NHL games.

The 2020 second-round pick has a goal and four assists in the NHL this year, as well as a +3 plus/minus rating, 22 hits and 28 blocks. His underlying numbers are even better, particularly on the possession front where Andrae has posted a CF% of 54.2 at even strength. The Flyers have leaned on Andrae quite a bit during his time in the NHL, as he has played 19:18 per game which makes his demotion all that more surprising.

Despite being undersized at just 5’9” Andrae did a good job winning puck battles and using his small frame to gain body positioning on opponents. His edge work remains solid, particularly in the offensive zone where he has been able to walk the blue line and get pucks to the net at a good rate.

Andrae had sat for several games as a healthy scratch, with the Flyers preferring to use Yegor Zamula over him. Now that he is back in the AHL, Andrae will have an opportunity to continue his development, and he should receive a recall at some point in the new year

Flyers Expected To Activate Cam York From Injured Reserve

Flyers defenseman Cameron York will likely make his return to the lineup on Saturday against the Blackhawks, indicating he’ll be activated from injured reserve, Kevin Kurz of The Athletic reports.

York, 23, has been on IR with an upper-body injury for nearly a month. He’s been a full participant in practice for more than a few days now, though, and is well past the initial two-week timeline for his return that was assessed on Oct. 26.

The Flyers were evidently cautious with rushing the young defender back, but “all signs point to” him playing this weekend after sitting out the last 13 games, Kurz said. The lefty, who the Flyers selected 14th overall in the 2019 draft, had skated at least 20 minutes in each of his first seven appearances of the season and had scored twice with one assist and a -2 rating.

Philadelphia head coach John Tortorella didn’t use consistent pairings at Friday’s practice, so it’s unclear where York might slot back into the lineup if he’s ready to go. He spent nearly all of his time stapled to Travis Sanheim on the team’s top pairing while playing his off-side though, and that would be his likely spot.

He might not be the only Flyers blue-liner returning, either, with Emil Andrae also taking line rushes and power-play drills today, per Charlie O’Connor of PHLY Sports. The 22-year-old had three assists in 10 games this season after a call-up from AHL Lehigh Valley before sustaining a mid-body injury against the Sabres last week. He’s missed the last two games but never landed on IR.

The Flyers have a full active roster and will need to open a spot to activate York. That could be accomplished by retroactively moving Andrae to IR if he’s not ready to play, or they could opt to return rookie defender Helge Grans to the minors after the 22-year-old recorded an assist and averaged 16:02 of ice time across a pair of appearances this week. Placing Andrae on IR would not impact his ability to return for Monday’s game against the Golden Knights, but they would need to make another corresponding transaction to activate him at that time.

York is in the second season of a two-year, $3.2MM contract and will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights next summer. He’s coming off a career-best 10-goal, 30-point campaign in 2023-24.

Metro Notes: Frost, Flyers, Jiricek, Lindstrom

Morgan Frost has had a tumultuous position in the Philadelphia Flyers’ lineup since John Tortorella took over as the team’s head coach in the 2022-23 season. He’s been a healthy scratch in three of the last four games, and this is coming one year after being a healthy scratch in half of the team’s first 20 contests last year. In an article (Subscription Article) in The Athletic, Kevin Kurz opines the Flyers could be headed for a breakup of sorts with Frost before his current contract ends.

There’s no questioning his skill on the offensive side of the puck. Frost scored 10 goals and 33 points over the last 50 games of the 2023-24 season finishing fifth on the team in scoring despite his time in the press box earlier in the year. That’s not enough for Tortorella to overlook his defensive shortcomings, as he typically expects much better two-way play from his centers.

Frost’s two-year, $4.2MM extension expires after this season and he’ll only have one more year remaining until he can hit unrestricted free agency. Kurz believes Philadelphia should trade Frost by the deadline despite selling low on the former-27th overall pick of the 2017 NHL Draft.

  • Continuing in Philadelphia, the organization announced multiple injury updates earlier today. Notably, defenseman Cam York won’t return to the lineup this evening despite being a full participant in practice on Monday. Defenseman Jamie Drysdale and netminder Samuel Ersson remain on the injured reserve with their injuries while defenseman Emil Andrae is considered day-to-day with a mid-body injury.
  • This morning, the Columbus Blue Jackets surprised many by reassigning defenseman David Jiříček to their AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters. Shortly after, Aaron Portzline of The Athletic wrote a scathing article (Subscription Article) on Columbus’ handling of the sixth overall pick of the 2022 NHL Draft. Jiříček has rarely had a consistent role with the Blue Jackets despite the team carrying a subpar defensive core and has little else to prove in the AHL after scoring 13 goals and 57 points in 84 career games.
  • Sticking in Columbus, Portzline reported that the team’s first pick of the 2024 NHL Draft, Cayden Lindstrom, underwent a minor surgical procedure this morning. Lindstrom hasn’t played at all this season with the WHL’s Medicine Hat Tigers due to a back injury, and today’s surgical procedure was a part of the recovery process. He was recently drafted with the fourth overall pick of this past summer’s draft after scoring 27 goals and 46 points in 32 games for the Tigers.

Flyers Recall Helge Grans Under Emergency Conditions

The Flyers announced Monday that they’ve recalled defenseman Helge Grans from AHL Lehigh Valley under emergency conditions. The 22-year-old will make his NHL debut tonight against the Avalanche, Jordan Hall of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports.

Grans will enter the lineup for Emil Andrae, who the team said won’t play after sustaining a mid-body injury against the Sabres on Saturday. Philadelphia moved goaltender Samuel Ersson to injured reserve to open a spot on the active roster.

Grans arrived in the Flyers organization last year as part of the three-team trade with the Kings and Blue Jackets that sent Ivan Provorov to Columbus. Drafted 35th overall by Los Angeles in 2020, the 6’3″, 205-lb righty already has loads of professional experience. He logged 69 games of Swedish Hockey League experience with Örebro HK before coming to North America in 2021, and he’s since recorded 11 goals, 33 assists, 44 points, 58 PIMs, and a -4 rating in 185 games for the Kings’ and Flyers’ affiliates in Ontario and Lehigh Valley.

While Grans once projected as a solid puck-moving defender with good size, his point totals in the minors suggest he’ll be more of a stay-at-home option if he manages to lock down an everyday NHL role. He’s struggled to make a significant impact on the scoresheet after a 24-point rookie season in 56 games with Ontario in 2021-22, posting just eight points (1 G, 7 A) in 56 games with Lehigh Valley last season.

Grans will debut on the right side of a pairing with Yegor Zamula, head coach John Tortorella said. Don’t expect them to log a ton of minutes, though, with Tortorella adding he plans to “play the s*** out of [Travis Sanheim] and [Rasmus Ristolainen]” as the Flyers look to win their fourth game in a row and push their record above .500 for the first time since their first game of the season (via Kevin Kurz of The Athletic).

For Andrae, it’s a tough break for the 22-year-old. He’s played well in fringe top-four minutes with Jamie Drysdale and Cameron York hitting injured reserve in recent weeks, posting three assists with a +1 rating in 10 appearances while averaging 18:27 per game. The undersized 5’9″ blue-liner has gotten involved physically with 13 blocks and 15 hits, and his possession play has been quite good. The Flyers have controlled 51.2% of shot attempts with Andrae on the ice at even strength compared to 42.2% without him.

Ersson, meanwhile, hits IR after re-aggravating a lower-body injury last week. He’s not expected back until Saturday’s game against the Blackhawks at the earliest, so today’s move is purely for roster flexibility purposes and doesn’t impact his timeline for a return.

Flyers Recall Alexei Kolosov, Emil Andrae; Place Cameron York On IR

7:04 PM: The Flyers organization confirmed the transaction of Andrae and Kolosov’s recall. Additionally, the team announced they’ve placed York on injured reserve as he will miss the next few weeks with an upper-body injury.

6:49 PM: The Philadelphia Flyers have recalled defenseman Emil Andrae and goaltender Alexei Kolosov from the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms, per Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco. Di Marco adds that Kolosov is expected to start for the team on Sunday, though NHL.com’s Kevin Kurz wasn’t ready to ensure that role. Kolosov stands as one of many high-profile goalie prospects in Philadelphia’s system. He’s started all four of Lehigh Valley’s regular season games so far this season, allowing 13 goals on 104 shots – good for an .875 save percentage.

Kolosov, 22, moved to the AHL at the end of last season, playing in two games with the Phantoms and allowing six goals on 52 shots. The spot starts came after Kolosov spent the season starting for the KHL’s Dynamo Minsk, where he posted a .907 through 47 games. It was his second season of starting for Dynamo, having posted a .912 in 42 games the year prior – after growing through the team’s junior ranks. He’d ultimately total a .909 save percentage through 120 games, and four seasons, at Russia’s top-level – though he became popular with strong performances for Team Belarus internationally. He joined the team at the World U18 Championship in 2019, Division A of the World Junior Championships in 2020 and 2022, and the World Championship in 2021. Of all of the international trips, it was the 2022 Division-A World Juniors that saw Kolosov shine the brightest – posting a .932 save percentage and flawless record through five games.

While Kolosov joins the battle for starting minutes, Andrae will once again return to the fight for a blue-line role. The 22-year-old defender played in four scoreless games with Philadelphia last season, but ultimately spent the bulk of his season in the minors. His 32 points in 61 games led all Phantoms defenders in scoring and brought Andrae up to 38 points in 71 career AHL games. He recorded an assist in his sole AHL appearance this year, and will now back the Flyers D-corps as they prepare for weeks without Cameron York. Andrae will fight for games with Erik Johnson and Yegor Zamula.

Flyers Reassign Emil Andrae, Activate Nick Seeler

Oct. 22: Seeler is officially off IR and will play tonight, the team announced.

Oct. 21: The Flyers have returned defense prospect Emil Andrae to AHL Lehigh Valley, a move made official this morning but reflected in the AHL’s transactions log over the weekend. It’s a strong indication that Nick Seeler, who’s yet to play this season after taking a puck to the knee late in their exhibition schedule, will come off injured reserve ahead of tomorrow’s game against the Capitals and will enter the lineup, per Adam Kimelman of NHL.com.

Andrae, 22, had a strong training camp by all accounts but fell just short of making the opening night roster. The 2020 second-round pick has four NHL games under his belt, all coming with Philly last season. He was recalled to give the Flyers injury insurance on the back end earlier this month, shortly after Seeler landed on IR, but he hasn’t played. He sat in the press box for all five of Philadelphia’s games this season.

The Swede will get the chance to hit the ice soon in Lehigh Valley, where he had 32 points (5 G, 27 A), 66 PIMs, and a -10 rating in 61 games last year. It was his first full campaign in North America after spending parts of four seasons in the Swedish Hockey League and HockeyAllsvenskan with HV71 and Västerviks IK. He won the latter league with HV71 in 2022, posting 33 points in 41 regular-season games and 11 points in 10 qualification games to lead their blue line and help them gain promotion back to the top-level SHL.

Andrae will likely get a legitimate NHL look later on in the season. In his four appearances with the Flyers last year, he posted a -1 rating, six blocks, and five hits while averaging 13 minutes per game. He still has one season left after this one on his entry-level contract and won’t be an RFA until 2026.

Meanwhile, Seeler’s return gives the 1-3-1 Flyers a much-needed boost. He’s expected to anchor the team’s second pairing alongside Jamie Drysdale, according to Jordan Hall of NBC Sports Philadelphia. The 31-year-old was deployed in top-four minutes at even strength for the first time last season, posting a career-high 12 assists with a +9 rating and 78 PIMs in 71 appearances. He averaged nearly 17 minutes per night and had some of the best possession quality metrics on the team, logging a 56.0 xGF%. That performance earned him a four-year, $10.8MM extension back in March, easily the richest deal of his career.

That stable presence will aid a Philly squad that’s really struggled to keep the puck out of their own net, allowing 4.20 GA/GP. Their possession play hasn’t been great, only controlling 47.5% of scoring chances and an abysmal 40.4% of high-danger chances at even strength. Seeler’s return will help get those numbers closer to 50 if his performance over the last two seasons is any indication.

5:00 PM: The Flyers have officially recalled Andrae from Lehigh Valley and placed Seeler on injured reserve retroactive to October 1st. Seeler will be eligible to return as soon as he’s healthy.

4:00 PM: Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella has shared that defenseman Nick Seeler won’t play in the team’s season opener on Friday, due to a minor lower-body injury. The team is expected to respond by calling up Emil Andrae, per reports from the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Jackie Spiegel and Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco.

Seeler, 31, was a core piece of Philadelphia’s third pairing last season, averaging roughly 17 minutes of ice time through 71 games. It was nearly two minutes more than he averaged in 2022-23, though that didn’t mean more scoring, with Seeler posting 12 points last year compared to 14 two seasons ago. The pair of seasons stand as the only times that Seeler has surpassed 10 points in his six-year, 296-game career in the NHL.

Andrae, 22, is on the other side of his career, playing in the first four games of his NHL career last season. He failed to score in those appearances, though he did lead all Lehigh Valley Phantoms defenders in scoring with 32 points in 61 games last year. Andrae now lands an early chance to score Philadelphia they were wrong for cutting him from training camp, though he’ll need to bring his strong scoring to the top flight if he wants to stand a chance at winning Seeler’s role.

Flyers Assign Emil Andrae To Minors; Recall Louie Belpedio, Victor Mete

Oct. 26: The Flyers have confirmed the move this morning, also announcing they’ve recalled defensemen Louis Belpedio and Victor Mete from Lehigh Valley. Recalling the two veterans will give them an extra defenseman on the active roster.

Oct. 25: Earlier this week, Flyers head coach John Tortorella told Jeff Neiburg of the Philadelphia Inquirer that he wasn’t sure if their current approach with defenseman Emil Andrae was the best for his development.  It appears a decision has been made on that front as CapFriendly reports (Twitter link) that Philadelphia has assigned the young rearguard to AHL Lehigh Valley.

The 21-year-old originally started the year rotating games with Yegor Zamula but with Marc Staal now set to miss the next six weeks or so with an upper-body injury and Rasmus Ristolainen having a setback in his recovery from an undisclosed injury, both youngsters have been in the lineup for the last couple of games.  Rather than continue using Andrae in limited action – he’s logging just 13 minutes per game – the decision has been made to get him more playing time with the Phantoms.  He only played in ten games there late last season after spending most of the year in the SHL.

At the moment, Philadelphia has just five defensemen on its active roster but, with an extra forward, they’re still compliant with the minimum roster requirements.  The Flyers are back in action on Thursday, however, so someone will need to be recalled.  Ronnie Attard, Adam Ginning, and Victor Mete were among their final cuts earlier this month which could have one of them poised to get the promotion.

Philadelphia Flyers Sign Emil Andrae

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed defenseman Emil Andrae to a three-year entry-level contract beginning with the 2023-24 season, according to a team release Monday.

The Flyers did not announce the financial specifics of the contract. However, they did note that Andrae is on an amateur tryout with their AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, for the remainder of the season. There, Andrae has recorded two assists in two games, building on what’s been a successful 2022-23 campaign for the young defender.

Andrae, 21, who hails from Västervik, Sweden, played tough minutes for HV71 in the SHL this season, back in Sweden’s top league after a one-year demotion to the second-tier Allsvenskan. In 51 games, Andrae recorded six goals, 20 assists, and a -3 rating, sitting tied for fourth in scoring on the team.

Drafted 54th overall in 2020, Andrae stood out at the 2022 World Junior Championship, captaining Team Sweden and recording four goals and eight points in seven games en route to a bronze medal and an All-Star Team nod. The main knock against Andrae is his smaller stature, standing at 5-foot-9 and 176 pounds, but he plays with the confidence and strength of a bulkier player.

He has the playing mentality that Flyers head coach John Tortorella is known to appreciate and reward. Although he likely requires a bit more development time before he’s ready for a full-time NHL role, Andrae could be one of the key blueliners on next year’s Phantoms team. The possibility remains that Andrae could be loaned back to HV71 next season if he doesn’t make the NHL squad, especially considering he has one season remaining on his contract there. The transfer agreement between the two leagues allows the Flyers to buy Andrae out of his contract in Sweden.

The Philadelphia Flyers haven’t quite signed Emil Andrae yet, but he is joining the organization nonetheless. The young Swede will play for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms down the stretch on an AHL amateur tryout, now that his SHL season has ended.

Charlie O’Connor of The Athletic tweets that the plan is still for Andrae to sign an entry-level contract with the Flyers at some point, likely one beginning in 2023-24. The team holds his exclusive draft rights until June 1, 2024.

The 21-year-old Andrae was the 54th overall selection in 2020, and broke out this season in his first full year of SHL action. With six goals and 26 points, he ranked 13th among league defensemen in scoring and now joins the Flyers as a potential building block.

Despite his size—Andrae stands just 5’8″—there has never been a doubt of his willingness to work in the corners or engage attackers in front of the net. The question now will be whether he can remain effective at those things as he transitions to North America, while still bringing a high level of poise and skill when the puck is on his stick.
