Denis Malgin Signs Long-Term In Switzerland

Swiss forward Denis Malgin is departing the NHL for his home country for the second and likely final time. The 26-year-old unrestricted free agent signed a five-year deal with NL club ZSC Lions today, keeping him overseas through 2027-28 and through his age 31 season.

Malgin split last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche thanks to a mid-season trade. After recording career-highs with 13 goals and 65 games played last year, though, the Avalanche did not issue him a qualifying offer, making him a UFA.

Oddly enough, Malgin recently walked away from a multi-year commitment he signed with ZSC in 2021. After spending the 2020-21 campaign on loan to Swiss club Lausanne from the Maple Leafs, Malgin signed a four-year deal with ZSC that offseason and was one of the best players in the league in the first year of the deal, recording 52 points in 48 games. He walked away from the remaining three years to rejoin the Maple Leafs last summer, who retained his rights with a qualifying offer in 2021.

It seems unlikely he’d terminate with the same club twice, however, especially after one NHL comeback that, while successful, obviously didn’t translate to any offers on the open market that he was interested in. The fourth-round pick of the Florida Panthers in 2015 will return to ZSC on a team stacked with former NHL forwards such as Sven Andrighetto, Rudolfs Balcers, Jesper Froden, and Juho Lammikko, although he’s the biggest fish of the bunch.

If it is the end of the road for Malgin in the NHL, he wraps up his career with 41 goals, 40 assists, 81 points, and a -16 rating in 257 games split between the Panthers, Maple Leafs, and Avalanche.

Snapshots: Edler, Norway, Malgin, Fiala

Speaking with reporters including Zach Dooley of LA Kings Insider at their end-of-season media scrums, Kings defenseman Alexander Edler indicated that he’s not yet sure if he’ll try to return for an 18th NHL season.  The 37-year-old played in 64 games this season (including his 1,000th career contest) but was limited to under 15 minutes per night for the first time since his rookie year back in 2006-07.  While Edler acknowledged that he feels healthy (he was often rested on back-to-backs this season), he admitted that it might take a while for him to decide if he’s going to continue playing or not.  Edler played on a league minimum contract this season with some performance bonuses but will likely need to accept closer to a straight minimum deal if he does want to play in 2023-24.

Elsewhere around the hockey world:

  • With the World Championship fast approaching, Norway was the latest country to reveal its roster for the event. As expected, it doesn’t feature much in the way of NHL content with Blue Jackets prospect Ole Julian Bjorgvik Holm being the only player on an NHL deal.  Winger Andreas Martinsen, who played 152 games with Colorado, Montreal, and Chicago over a four-year NHL career, is also on the roster.  The tournament gets underway on Friday.
  • Avalanche winger Denis Malgin is expected to be a late addition to Switzerland’s roster for the Worlds, according to a report from Watson News. The 26-year-old did well after coming over in a midseason swap, picking up 11 goals in 42 games despite averaging just 10:32 per night.  Notably, Malgin does not have a contract for next season; it’s typically rare for a pending free agent to play in this event.
  • Also from that report, it will be another week before a decision is made on whether Kings winger Kevin Fiala will participate in the event. The 26-year-old missed the first three games of the playoffs with a lower-body injury and it appears that Los Angeles wants to see how Fiala’s recovery goes over the next few days before deciding on allowing him to participate.

Colorado Avalanche Acquire Denis Malgin

The Colorado Avalanche, still looking for some scoring depth, have acquired Denis Malgin from the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for Dryden Hunt. The move is the second time Hunt has switched teams this season after being claimed off waivers from the New York Rangers in October.

Malgin, 25, returned to North America this season after spending the last two years in Switzerland, where he dominated the National League for both Lausanne and Zurich. In 2021-22 he scored 21 goals and 52 points in 48 regular season games, then put up 18 points in 17 postseason matches. It appeared as though he might get an extended opportunity next to John Tavares and Mitch Marner with Toronto, but after scoring just four points in 23 games so far, the team has moved on.

Colorado has recalled Martin Kaut today, likely as Malgin sorts out travel plans to join the club.

Hunt, meanwhile, is a more traditional bottom-six forward and has just two goals in 28 games split between Colorado and New York. Though he’s not a huge player, he does bring a lot more physicality than Malgin, and can potentially give Toronto an extra fourth-line option to work with.

Notably, Maple Leafs forward Calle Jarnkrok was spotted at practice today in a regular sweater. His return from injury would have likely pushed Malgin down, if not entirely out of the lineup, and likely means there won’t be an immediate spot for Hunt. That could mean Hunt will end up on waivers again at some point, though the Maple Leafs do have an extra roster spot right now for Jarnkrok’s activation.

A swap of playstyle from two underperforming depth forwards, this may end up not meaning much for either organization. It certainly will, however, cause some more painful memories for Maple Leafs fans who watched the team trade Mason Marchment for Malgin in 2020. While Marchment has established himself as a force in the league, Malgin provided the Maple Leafs with four points in 31 total games.

Lineup Notes: Hoglander, Robertson, Holloway

The Vancouver Canucks will spin the wheel of healthy scratches again tonight, this time sitting down Nils Hoglander for their game against the Minnesota Wild. Conor Garland will be inserted back onto the top line after taking his turn in the press box, according to Harman Dayal of The Athletic, who also tweets out that Tucker Poolman will be a game-time decision.

Hoglander, 21, recorded an assist on Tuesday against the Columbus Blue Jackets, his only point of the season so far, and has just seven shots on net through four games. The diminutive forward hasn’t been able to replicate the kind of impact he had when he first entered the league in 2021, scoring 27 points in 56 games during the shortened season. While head coach Bruce Boudreau likes the way Hoglander is playing, he told Dayal that “sometimes you look at your opposition and see what you need.”

  • The offseason experiment of Denis Malgin on the Toronto Maple Leafs’ second line is coming to an end, at least for tonight. According to Jonas Siegel of The Athletic, the team will move top prospect Nick Robertson into the lineup to play beside John Tavares and William Nylander, an especially exciting opportunity for the young forward because of the opponent. Robertson’s brother Jason Robertson is in town with the Dallas Stars, making the second time the siblings will face off in the NHL. Despite starting games with the top-six unit, Malgin has averaged just 11:18 through his first four appearances with the Maple Leafs, seeing fewer than nine minutes in a recent loss against the Arizona Coyotes.
  • Dylan Holloway isn’t going to play tonight, according to Ryan Rishaug of TSN, who notes that while the young forward is listed as day-to-day, it could be a little while before he returns to the lineup if he’s dealing with a head injury. The Oilers’ prospect got punished by Buffalo Sabres defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin earlier this week in a massive open-ice hit. With Holloway injured, Edmonton will have to go with a roster of just 20 healthy players, unless another move is made (or the young forward ends up on LTIR).

Toronto Maple Leafs To Sign Denis Malgin

Per ESPN’s Kevin Weekes, the Toronto Maple Leafs are bringing back forward Denis Malgin off their reserve list, giving him a one-year deal.

Malgin, somewhat infamously acquired from the Florida Panthers in exchange for Mason Marchment, has spent the last two seasons as one of the best players in the NL in his native Switzerland. After notching 52 points in 48 games with the ZSC Lions in 2021-22, he’ll return to Toronto to give it another shot in a depth role.

Malgin had no points in eight games after the trade in 2019-20. He spent the 2020-21 season on loan to Lausanne HC in Switzerland. While unsigned by Toronto last year, he remained on the team’s reserve list as he did receive a qualifying offer from the team. He’ll now aim to make the team this fall and contribute in a bottom-six role. Toronto will be counting on contributions from depth players like him in order to remain playoff contenders this season.

Switzerland, Slovakia Announce Olympic Rosters

The 2022 Winter Olympics is inching closer, with pre-tournament games happening in just a few weeks. Several countries including the U.S. have announced the rosters that will compete next month and today two more revealed their NHL-less groups.

For Switzerland, it’s a roster with several familiar names including Gregory Hofmann, who only just terminated his contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Swiss finished tenth in 2018 after missing the quarterfinals because of a loss to the Czech Republic. This year they will have a chance at redemption, as they’re in a group with Czechia, the Russian Olympic Committee, and Denmark. The Swiss roster looks like this:

Switzerland wasn’t alone announcing a roster today, as Slovakia also revealed the group that will travel to Beijing. Their group also has plenty of former NHL talent on it, though they’ll certainly be in tough during the group stage. Slovakia is in Group C, which also includes Finland, Sweden, and Latvia, meaning they’ll likely have to make it through the qualification playoff round.

Though Slovakia’s path to a medal will be difficult, their team should be very exciting. Nemec and Slafkovsky in particular are two names to watch, as top draft-eligible players for 2022. Nemec in particular has the ability to take over a game if given the chance, as he does on a routine basis for HK Nitra, his Slovakian club team. The 17-year-olds should be used to international competition by now, having both appeared at the World Championship last summer.

Denis Malgin Signs In Switzerland

Forward Denis Malgin has signed a four-year contract with the ZSC Lions of the Swiss National League, the team announced early this morning. Taking him through the 2024-25 season, the announcement means we’ve seen the last of Malgin in the NHL for a solid bit of time.

Malgin spent last year under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs but played the entire season on loan in the Swiss league with Lausanne HC. His last NHL action came in 2019-20, splitting the season between the Florida Panthers and the Maple Leafs. Swapped between the two teams midseason in exchange for forward Mason Marchment, Malgin had 12 points in 36 games for Florida but none in eight games for Toronto down the stretch. Malgin, a fourth-round pick of Florida in 2015, enters this extended pause in his NHL career with 28 goals, 32 assists, and 60 points in 192 games, all but those last eight coming with the Panthers.

A skilled playmaker, Malgin impressed with Lausanne last season, potting 19 goals and 42 points in 45 games. He’ll look to continue that run of success as one of the best players in the league. Returning to ZSC marks a bit of a homecoming for Malgin, who played within the club’s youth and professional system from 2010 to 2016.

It’s important to note that Malgin was indeed issued a qualifying offer by Toronto at the beginning of the summer. Due to this, the Leafs will retain his NHL rights indefinitely and Malgin will remain on their reserve list. If Malgin does choose to return to the NHL in the summer of 2025, it will be with Toronto barring a trade.

Denis Malgin Clears Waivers

Jan 6: Malgin has cleared and can continue to play in Switzerland.

Jan 5: The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed another depth forward on waivers. Denis Malgin has hit the wire as he continues to play in Switzerland for Lausanne. Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas said he would not interrupt that season for a player who was not guaranteed a roster spot, so Malgin will finish the year in the NLA before returning to North America. To do that, he needed to be waived at some point.

Still, Malgin is an interesting candidate to be claimed if some team wants to throw a wrench in the Maple Leafs’ plans. The 23-year-old forward actually has 192 games of NHL experience and scored 22 points in 51 games with the Florida Panthers in 2017-18. Malgin signed a new one-year, one-way $700K contract with the Maple Leafs in October but was still pushed down the depth chart by several free agent additions.

For now, should he clear he will continue to play for Lausanne, where he has 22 points in 19 games. The undersized forward is a candidate to join the Maple Leafs later on after his season ends, giving them some additional depth down the stretch.

Denis Malgin Loaned To Lausanne HC

The Toronto Maple Leafs have loaned Denis Malgin overseas, sending him to Lausanne HC of the Swiss NLA. Malgin signed a new one-year contract with the Maple Leafs last week and had already been training back home in Switzerland.

While he certainly doesn’t draw many headlines, the 23-year-old forward has actually quietly racked up 192 games played over the last four seasons and hasn’t suited up in the minor leagues since 2017. The Maple Leafs acquired him in exchange for Mason Marchment last season and put him in the lineup for eight games down the stretch. Undersized, Malgin is a bottom-six option for the cap-strapped Maple Leafs next season.

Malgin will be expected to return in time for NHL training camp, like some of the other Maple Leafs players currently suiting up overseas. Mikko Lehtonen, one of their prized free agent signings, is currently lighting it up in the KHL once again. When considering how the Maple Leafs will fill out their roster come next season, these inexpensive names currently playing overseas are important to remember.

Toronto Maple Leafs Re-Sign Denis Malgin

The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed one of their restricted free agents, inking Denis Malgin to a new one-year deal. The contract will carry a salary of $700K and pushes restricted free agency a year into the future for the young forward.

Importantly for a cap-strapped team like the Maple Leafs, Malgin will come in under the amount he would have received through a qualifying offer. While that offer could have been a two-way deal (which it appears this is not), it would have been worth $787,500 at the NHL level. Even minuscule savings are important for Toronto at this point and given the fact that Malgin was also arbitration-eligible, it seemed plausible that he wouldn’t even receive a qualifying offer in the first place.

Instead, he’ll return to the team on the league minimum and continue in his role as a depth option next season. Malgin was acquired in exchange for Mason Marchment in February and ended up playing eight games for the Maple Leafs before the season was canceled. He failed to score a point during those games, but does have 60 in his 192-game NHL career.

Still just 23, Malgin will likely be in the competition at Maple Leafs camp for a fourth-line spot next season. With so much money tied up at the top of the roster, Toronto has to use inexpensive options at the bottom.
