Erik Karlsson On The Trade Block?

Erik Karlsson’s recent comments combined with the Ottawa Senators’ ongoing struggles has created a rumor firestorm that isn’t likely to die down any time soon. The Senators are 1-8-1 in their last ten games and are sinking further and further out of playoff contention this season. Owner Eugene Melnyk is unsurprisingly sensitive right now and Karlsson stating that he would not take a discount to re-sign in Ottawa when his contract expires after next season has rubbed Melnyk the wrong way, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman and Nick Kypreos.

That does not mean that Karlsson is being traded right away or even that the Senators plan to trade him at all. However, steps are being taken to allow a potential Karlsson trade to happen. Sportsnet reports that the Senators have asked all of their players with modified no-trade clauses  – Karlsson, Bobby Ryan, Mike Hoffman, Derick Brassard, Zack Smith, Alexandre Burrows, Nate Thompson, Clarke MacArthur, Dion Phaneuf, and Johnny Oduya – to submit their lists of team they would or would not be traded to, per the terms of each individual clause. For Karlsson, he has a a ten-team no-trade list that will now be on record for the Senators and GM Pierre Dorion, should they choose to make a move.

In the opinion of Kypreos, a move should be made and it should be made soon. Karlsson’s market value, the team’s poor performance, and the Senator’s relatively low revenue and unwillingness to spend to the salary cap ceiling all make a Karlsson extension extremely unlikely. Rather than wait until next season for Karlsson to become just a rental player, Kypreos believes that a trade should be made by this summer and the earlier the better. It is hard to imagine Ottawa getting a fair return for arguably the best defenseman in the NHL, but they will surely get a better deal trading Karlsson this season instead of next.

Yet, the public relations train for the Senators will keep rolling. No one will make it known that Karlsson is trade bait until an actual deal is finalized. The team has enough issues that they don’t need their best player disgruntled and the locker room in disarray. Karlsson being traded is a real possibility, but you won’t hear it from Melnyk or anyone else in Ottawa any time soon.

Clarke MacArthur failed his physical before the season, and according to GM Pierre Dorion on TSN radio he likely won’t be playing at all this year. MacArthur is not with the team and has moved to Florida, which could signal the disappointing end to a solid career.

MacArthur came back for the Senators just before the playoffs last year, and was an integral part of their run to game seven of the Eastern Conference Finals. His career was derailed by head injuries, but he was once a consistent offensive producer and reliable top-six winger. In 552 games he scored 304 points. Dorion did admit that they’d look at bringing him back in should he want to play next season, as he’s under contract for $4.65MM per season through 2019-20. More likely he’ll spend the next few seasons on long-term injured reserve.

  • The Nashville Predators also have some bad news when it comes to injuries, as the team announced Yannick Weber and Scott Hartnell would each be out several weeks with their respective injuries. While Nick Bonino is back from his injured reserve stint, losing Weber and Hartnell will put some more stress on the Predators’ depth chart. Luckily, the team already relies so heavily on their top three defensemen that Weber’s role shouldn’t be too difficult to fill. While Hartnell is a bit tougher, there are several young wingers ready to step into the situation.
  • The New Jersey Devils and Toronto Maple Leafs could each get a boost to their forward group when they meet on Thursday night, as both Travis Zajac and Auston Matthews have a chance to play. Zajac was back at practice centering the top line for the Devils today, while Matthews was on the ice for an hour with a few teammates despite being given the day off. The Devils and Maple Leafs each have 24 points through the first part of the season, and it should be a good matchup on Thursday especially if both get their top centers back.

“No Panic” In Kyle Turris Extension Talks

Recently the Ottawa Senators were thrust into the rumor mill when Darren Dreger of TSN speculated on a possible trade. The fire was only stoked when Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet spoke about a potential gap in terms of contract length for the new deal, but now Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia spoke directly to Senators GM Pierre Dorion on the matter.

Kyle Turris“No panic” is the quote Garrioch shared, reporting that Dorion believes something can get done between the two sides. Turris is clearly an important part to the Senators and is averaging 21 minutes a night through the first three games of the season. He’s set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, but could reach a long-term deal to center the Senators’ top line for some time.

An interesting factor in the Senators’ decision may be the long-term health of Clarke MacArthur. The forward’s contract is fully insured, meaning that if he can’t return to the NHL after his latest bout with post-concussion symptoms, not only will the team get potential cap relief but also likely remove a financial burden. That $4.75MM in salary per season would go a long way in helping an internal budget team like Ottawa afford to keep Turris around.

They also have to worry about new contracts for Mark Stone and Cody Ceci this summer, when the pair reaches restricted free agency, and the pending massive deal Erik Karlsson will be signing for the 2019-20 season. Still, watching a 28-year old top line center walk in free agency is almost unheard of, making this a case of extension or trade by the end of the season.

Clarke MacArthur Fails Physical, Future Unclear

Unfortunately for everyone who was rooting for his comeback, Clarke MacArthur has failed his physical at Ottawa Senators’ camp and will be unable to participate with the team. It remains unclear what the future holds for the 32-year old winger, after concussion issues have robbed him of most of the past two years.

MacArthur has played in only four regular season games in each of the last two seasons, but made a comeback at the end of last year and suited up for the Senators’ playoff run. Scoring nine points in 19 playoff games, he was one of the more inspiring stories of the year in the NHL. Still, he complained of neck pain after the Senators were eliminated and needed to consult doctors. It seems as though something has resurfaced, at least enough to keep him out for the time being.

It would be foolish to rule him out for the season, as MacArthur has shown an relentless drive to get back on the ice in recent years. But for now the team will have to move on without him occupying one of the spots in their top nine. The team already had some question marks on the wing, and MacArthur’s loss only complicates things further. While Mark Stone, Mike Hoffman, Ryan Dzingel and Bobby Ryan remain locks, the rest of the group is an uninspiring mishmash of bottom-six players. Senators camp will be interesting to watch, as players like Colin White and Nick Paul could potentially be impact wingers in the NHL if given the chance.

The Ottawa Senators have announced an extension for defenseman Patrick Sieloff. The two sides have agreed to a one-year, two-way deal worth $650K at the NHL level. Sieloff, 23, has just one NHL game under his belt, back with the Calgary Flames in 2015-16, but the  stay-at-home defender posted a career-high 12 points last year with the AHL’s Binghamton Senators this past season. A second-round pick in 2012 and the sole return for the Senators from the Alex Chiasson trade, it makes sense that Ottawa would like to retain the valuable Sieloff, even if he is developing slowly. However, there are sure to be many Sens fans upset at the extension news. Sieloff is best known in Ottawa as the player who boarded Clarke MacArthur, just returning from missing most of the 2015-16 season with a concussion, during a Senators’ preseason scrimmage, causing yet another concussion which kept him out most of 2016-17 as well. It was not the best start to Sieloff’s Senators tenure, but clearly not enough for the organization to turn on him.

  • The AHL’s Utica Comets, the minor league affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks, announced that they have re-signed forward Darren Archibald to a one-year deal. Archibald, a big, physical right wing, also found his scoring touch last season, setting the Comets’ franchise goal-scoring record with 23 goals. Although Archibald was only in the NHL for 16 games, a brief stint with the Canucks during the 2013-14 season, he’s made a name for himself with their affiliate. Archibald is second in team history, albeit for a young Comets franchise, in games played, goals, and points and first in penalty minutes. Another strong season on both offense and defense could earn Archibald another NHL look.
  • The New York Islanders made official the hiring of Kelly Buchberger as an assistant coach today, a move that has been in the works since before the end of the 2016-17 season. Buchberger, like Archibald, was a big, physical right wing with a knack for scoring goals, only Buchberger did it in the NHL for 17 years. He has also served as an assistant coach and vice president of player development for the Edmonton Oilers in recent years, the city he played in for the bulk of his career. A two-time Stanley Cup winner and a former NHL captain, Buchberger bring experience and leadership to Doug Weight’s young coaching staff.

Ottawa Senators veteran wing Clarke MacArthur, who has only played in 27 games in the past two years due to concussion issues, said he will take a couple weeks to re-evaluate himself for next season, according to Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen. The veteran winger, who has been dealing with post-concussions symptoms for 18 months before finally returning Apr. 4 for four regular season games and 19 playoff games, said he is excited about playing hockey again, but wants time to talk with doctors again.

MacArthur finished the playoffs with three goals and six assists, but says his neck doesn’t feel right and wants to get it checked out before committing to next season. The veteran still has three years remaining at 4.65MM and the Senators will be keeping a close eye on the results before they must submit their protection rosters for the upcoming expansion draft.

MacArthur, when healthy, is a solid third-line scorer and his presence proved useful throughout the playoffs, but the team needs him to return to his old self next year to keep the Senators success going. MacArthur had 24 goals in 2013-14 and 16 goals in the 2014-15 season.

  • Arizona Coyotes winger Tobias Rieder underwent successful surgery on the ankle injury he sustained at the IIHF World Championships, tweets Arizona Sports’ Craig Morgan. He is expected to be out of action for 8-12 weeks, but should be ready for training camp. The 24-year-old finished up his third season for the Coyotes, finishing with 16 goals and 18 assists.
  • Currently ranked as the top prospect by many organizations in the upcoming NHL draft, center Nolan Patrick has agreed to do all the physical tests at next week’s draft combine in Buffalo, tweets The Hockey News Ryan Kennedy. Patrick, who was injured for much of the 2016-17 season in which he played in only 33 games for the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings (although he scored 20 goals in that span) is being considered for the No. 1 overall pick by the New Jersey Devils along with center Nico Hischier.

Morning Notes: MacArthur, Jagr, Darling

Ottawa’s Clarke MacArthur is day-to-day following an injury sustained in the second period of Game 2 versus the New York Rangers. MacArthur took a rather routine, if tough, hit from New York captain Ryan McDonagh. MacArthur appears to have gotten his hands up to absorb some of the high body check, but with MacArthur’s recent history, another concussion is always the fear. MacArthur missed the bulk of this and last season (8 games combined) to lingering concussion symptoms, and would likely have been a finalist for the Masterton had he not been on the same squad as goalie Craig Anderson. The 32 year-old left winger had dealt with quality-of-life issues and was forced to even contemplate retirement. Although coach Guy Boucher did not express major concern, Senators fans will certainly be holding their breath in hopes that nothing serious was sustained. As Boucher said, “it’s something he had last game and he aggravated today” – whatever it was, he had already played through once. It’s difficult to see a coach taking chances with concussion symptoms in this day and age, with this player – even in the playoffs. Whether he returns for Game 3 or at all this series is up in the air.

  • As expected, the Carolina Hurricanes organization will attempt to sign Scott Darling to a contract as soon as they are able. The Hurricanes took a bit of a gamble in acquiring an impending UFA for a 3rd-round draft pick. Certainly they have the inside track with regard to signing the goaltender, but there is every possibility he could choose to test the market. His phenomenal season as the backup in Chicago would certainly attract a few suitors, and by heading to July 1st, he only improves his leverage. Carolina was already in a pickle as to which goaltender they would protect. If Darling signs before June 18th, the team would expose both Cam Ward and Eddie Lack in the expansion draft, which could be quite financially beneficial. If they cannot sign him before that date, they could choose to leave Darling unprotected. It’s unlikely that Vegas would opt to choose a UFA who is seemingly holding out (considering they would have a limited negotiation period), but he might be one of the few UFAs that would be intriguing enough for them to roll the dice.
  • Jaromir Jagr’s agent is expected to meet with Florida Panthers management in hopes of negotiating a new contract. The 45 year-old future Hall of Famer has played for 8 separate franchises, but has spent his last 3 seasons in the sunshine state. Dale Tallon, newly re-instated, has nothing but praise for the tough, creative winger. This season, however, Jagr showed signs of slowing down, literally and figuratively. He posted a career low 16 goals and personally substandard 46 points. The totals were still good for 4th on the team, behind youngsters Vincent Trocheck, Aleksander Barkov, and Jonathan Marchessault. Jagr has repeatedly expressed his desire to keep playing until his body fails him, even proclaiming the goal of playing until the age of 60. Jagr will likely be able to find a fit for next season in Florida if his salary demands aren’t too excessive.

Clarke MacArthur Will Return To NHL Action

After missing nearly two full seasons with concussion problems, Clarke MacArthur will return to the lineup tonight for the Ottawa Senators. MacArthur last played a regular season game in the NHL on October 14th, 2015. Senators GM Pierre Dorion says that multiple doctors cleared him over a week ago, and that the team wanted his first game to be at home. Even his teammates were surprised to see his name in the lineup, as he was still expected to miss the entire season. "<strong

MacArthur suffered his fourth concussion in an 18-month period when he was hit in training camp by prospect Patrick Sieloff, a collision that sparked a brawl between teammates. MacArthur was then shut down in January when it was deemed that it was too dangerous to return to hockey this season. Many people believed that his career was over, though MacArthur would never admit that and always maintained that he would return this year. With the Senators barely holding on to a playoff spot and the Tampa Bay Lightning breathing down their necks, MacArthur’s return could pay off if he can return to his previous form.

A three-time 20-goal scorer, MacArthur was an extremely effective possession winger who could fit in alongside almost any type of play style and find success. Moving up and down the lineup, he’s been considered a solid two-way player mainly because of how easily he could retrieve and move the puck. He’s also an effective powerplay player, which he will be put on right away tonight. 34 of his 133 career goals have come on the powerplay, something the Senators have had trouble with this season—they rank 23rd in the league in PP%.

While his return is a heartwarming story, it will bring the brain injury discussion to the forefront once again as a player returns earlier than expected. Despite installing their concussion protocol and spotters in every rink, the NHL is embroiled in a legal battle about brain injuries and the possible development of CTE. While they fight that battle in the courtrooms, every hit MacArthur takes will make fans and league officials alike wince and hope for no further injury. With Aaron Ekblad recently returning “too soon”, it would be a blow to the NHL should MacArthur suffer a setback now.

The NFL approved the Oakland Raiders bid to move to Las Vegas today, which led to a lot of different opinions on the future of the Vegas Golden Knights as the prime sports franchise in the city. Though the Raiders aren’t expected to move to the city until the 2019 season, PFR’s Zach Links writes that they may not wait that long if the fan pressure gets to them next season.

The Golden Knights released a statement on the move, indicating that they’re happy to welcome the Raiders into their community. It would seem though, that even if the Raiders do improve Vegas’ viability as a major sports market they will definitely eat at some of the corporate sales and sponsorships available for the NHL franchise. This is exactly why the NHL wanted to get into the market first, in order to try and build a fan base before one of the other leagues forced their way in.

  • Despite a history of concussions throughout his career, Clarke MacArthur is trying to return to professional hockey—this season. In January, the team had announced that he wouldn’t play again this season, but according to Ian Mendes of TSN MacArthur has never given up hope. Head coach Guy Boucher is operating as though he’s shut down, but apparently there has been some talk about having him retry the baseline testing that had him shutdown earlier this year. It still seems extremely dangerous for MacArthur, but if he could return as an effective winger the Senators would be that much more dangerous in the playoffs.
  • The Los Angeles Kings have signed Matt Roy to a two-year entry-level deal, now that Michigan Tech’s season is over. The team lost at the hands of the University of Denver on Saturday, ending their run for the Frozen Four before it had even really begun. Roy  was a seventh-round pick of the Kings in 2015, and has posted two straight seasons of excellence on the Michigan Tech blueline. He’s turning pro a year early, and has the makings of a solid two-way defender for the AHL with a chance to grow into something even better.

After the New Jersey Devils sold off a couple of expiring assets, the rest of season will likely come down to developing some young players and building chemistry for next year. Though they’re not out of the playoff race completely, it’ll be a tough climb out of the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

One of those youngsters, Pavel Zacha, has been out of the lineup since February 21st with a concussion but was back on the ice this morning according to Andrew Gross of The Record. It was his first time on the ice with his teammates since suffering the head injury, a good sign for the 19-year old.
