St. Louis Blues Recall Scott Perunovich

It was only a matter of time before the St. Louis Blues recalled Scott Perunovich, and that date has finally come. The young defenseman was recalled this morning with the Blues sending Joel Hofer, Dakota Joshua, and Calle Rosen down to make room.

It likely would have been earlier had the Blues not dealt with COVID absences, making their cap situation even more delicate the last several weeks, but the AHL’s best player is finally getting the call. Perunovich has completely dominated the minor leagues this season, recording 20 points in 12 games for the Springfield Thunderbirds. That performance is as a rookie since the 23-year-old failed to suit up even a single time last year due to injury.

The winner of the 2020 Hobey Baker, Perunovich was expected by many to step directly into the NHL upon arrival. While it’s been a long, unexpected wait, it only allowed him to prove once again that he could be one of the most dynamic offensive defensemen at the lower level. Whether he can bring that kind of production to the NHL remains to be seen, but he’ll now finally get the chance.

Given Hofer’s assignment, it’s likely that Ville Husso will also be activated from the COVID protocol in the coming days. The backup netminder has been skating already and only needed to reach a comfortable level of fitness before rejoining the active roster. His absence, and Hofer’s recall, was part of the issue when recalling Perunovich, given the non-roster designation did not remove him from the Blues cap.

Krug Placed In COVID Protocol; Schenn Returns To St. Louis

The St. Louis Blues will be without the services of another important player, announcing that Torey Krug has been placed in the COVID protocol. The team has recalled Calle Rosen from the AHL, moving Dakota Joshua down in his place. Not only is Krug is unavailable for the time being, but so is Brayden Schenn, who is dealing with an upper-body injury and has returned to St. Louis for further evaluation.

It’s not all bad news for the Blues, who also are getting Ryan O’Reilly back after his own COVID quarantine. General manager Doug Armstrong explained that O’Reilly has rejoined the team on the road trip and is expected to be ready to play on Sunday. The captain’s return comes at the perfect time as the team deals with both injuries and COVID-related absences.

In fact, the Blues could be in a very tricky situation if anyone else is ruled out. Armstrong told reporters including Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic that given they have just 21 players now and could have to play short. St. Louis doesn’t have the cap space to recall anyone else, given they were already using almost all of the flexibility created by placing Oskar Sundqvist on injured reserve. If they do have to play short at any point, the team would be able to make an emergency recall afterward to bring up a player without his cap hit. That would only be until the injured players are ready to return, but would at least keep them from icing a shortened roster.

Losing Krug and Schenn at the same though is a brutal hit for the team given how important they are. Krug averages nearly 21 minutes of ice time and has eight points in his first nine games, while Schenn had been carrying a big part of the load at center with O’Reilly out. The 30-year-old forward’s six points in nine games trails several others, but he is still a huge part of their game plan at both ends of the rink.

12 Players Clear Waivers

Oct 7: There were 30 players that hit waivers yesterday, but today’s list is quite a bit smaller. Just a dozen names are available for claim according to Chris Johnston of the Toronto Star. Those names are:

St. Louis Blues Sign Calle Rosen

The St. Louis Blues have shored up their defensive depth a bit more, signing Calle Rosen to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal is expected to pay Rosen $750K in the NHL and $300K in the AHL.

Rosen, 27, came over from Sweden in 2017 as a highly-touted defenseman, but has struggled to find his way in the NHL. With just 20 games at that level to this point, a deal here for the Blues is more about minor league depth than anything else. In 2020-21, Rosen spent the entire season with the Toronto Marlies, scoring 13 points in 20 games.

He’s proven himself to be an excellent AHL option, even able to play the top-pair at times. While there may be a handful of NHL games in his future should the Blues experience several injuries, the depth chart is looking pretty long already. St. Louis has seven defensemen under one-way contracts, plus names like Steven Santini and Scott Perunovich waiting for an opportunity. Rosen is likely ticketed for the Springfield Thunderbirds after training camp, as long as he clears waivers.

Jake Muzzin Out Four Weeks With Broken Hand

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ defensive depth is getting even thinner by the day. The team announced today that Jake Muzzin will be out for the next four weeks after suffering a broken hand last night. The recently re-acquired Calle Rosen has been recalled in his place.

With Morgan Rielly and Cody Ceci already out, the Maple Leafs’ defense now consists almost entirely of the group that won the AHL Calder Cup in 2018. Travis Dermott, Justin Holl, Timothy Liljegren, Martin Marincin and Rosen were all on that team, leaving only Tyson Barrie and Rasmus Sandin—a 19-year old with 24 NHL games under his belt—as those who weren’t part of the playoff run. For a team trying to clinch a divisional playoff spot, that group will have to take some real development steps in a hurry.

Muzzin, 31, just inked a four-year extension with the Maple Leafs that will start paying him an average of $5.65MM next year. His veteran leadership has been immeasurable for the team this season, but this will be his second major injury after breaking his foot earlier on. In 53 games he has 23 points.

If he does return in four weeks it would leave just five games before the end of the season for Muzzin to get his legs under him and help the Maple Leafs secure a spot. Rielly and Ceci are both expected back before the end of the year as well, but for now the team will have to rely on their inexperienced group to get them close to the finish line.

Toronto Trades Hutchinson To Colorado, Re-Acquires Rosen

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced they have re-acquired a familiar face as the team picked up defenseman Calle Rosen from the Colorado Avalanche, while sending third-string goaltender Michael Hutchinson back.

Rosen, 26, spent the previous two years with the Maple Leafs, mostly with the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, but did play eight games with the Leafs between those two seasons. The belief was that he had developed to the point that he was a likely candidate to take over a third-pairing defenseman for Toronto this season. However, instead the Maple Leafs traded him to Colorado during the summer as part of the Nazem Kadri deal that brought in Tyson Barrie and Alex Kerfoot. Rosen has split time with the Avalanche as well, but has primarily stayed in the AHL with the Eagles, where he has three goals and 15 points in 35 games. He has appeared in eight games with the Avalanche with two assists.

As for Hutchinson, the Avalanche needed some depth at the position with the injury to Philipp Grubauer and they got it. The team has been using backup Pavel Francouz as the primary starter, but need a capable backup to fill in as a third-string option. Hutchinson started the season as the Maple Leafs’ backup goaltender, but struggled immensely all season. An injury to Frederik Andersen, only made things worse as the netminder allowed seven goals in his final two appearances before Toronto opted to trade for Jack Campbell and sending Hutchinson to the Marlies. In 15 games, Hutchinson had a 3.66 GAA and a .866 save percentage. He has played better in the AHL in four starts this year, posting a 1.98 GAA and a .943 save percentage.

Minor Transactions: 11/24/19

Saturday was a full day of exciting, close games, as 14 match-ups yielded a combined margin of victory of just 24 goals.  This included eight one-goal games, five of which needed extra time to decide, and another four two-goal games. Sunday will be much quieter, with just six teams in action, but could feature more close finishes, with evenly-matched divisional contests in Sabres-Panthers and Oilers-Coyotes. For the other 25 teams not competing, watch for today to be used for evaluation of the week that was and preparation for a new slate of upcoming games.   • The New Jersey Devils recalled forward Brett Seney late yesterday afternoon from AHL Binghamton and added him to the lineup right away for their Saturday night tilt with the Detroit Red Wings. The Merrimack college product has been tearing up the minors with 11 goals and 18 points in 19 games, but received just 8:45 in ice time last night. Seney played in 51 games with New Jersey last season, but appears to still have work to do to re-claim a regular role again this year.
  • The Washington Capitals announced that Michael Sgarbossa has been returned to the AHL’s Hershey Bears, which could indicate that another forward is ready to return to the NHL lineup. Injuries to Nicklas Backstrom, Carl Hagelin, and Nic Dowd and the suspension of Garnet Hathaway forced the Caps to recall multiple forwards just to ice a full group up front, so Sgarbossa’s demotion could mean one of those three injured forwards is set to return. However, the team is also off until Wednesday, which could make the move a cap decision or simply a chance to give Sgarbossa real ice time with the Bears in their game today. Sgarbossa’s play in Hershey this year has been strong, but his role has been severely limited while with Washington.
  • Filip Zadina is back up with the Detroit Red Wings. The team announced that veteran defenseman Mike Green has been moved to the injured reserve and that the 2018 sixth overall pick has taken his place on the roster. Zadina, who only played in nine games with Detroit last year and has yet to see NHL action this season, will hope to make an impact on this recall, assuming he gets into the lineup. The Czech winger has strong AHL numbers, but Detroit has been hesitant to give him an extended look at the top level. Green’s IR placement is retroactive to November 19, so the clock is already ticking for Zadina to prove he is worthy of a longer stay in the NHL.
  • The Florida Panthers have recalled defenseman Riley Stillman ahead of their game later tonight with the Buffalo Sabres. Stillman, 21, has played in three games with the Panthers already this season and has not looked out of place. Florida is far from deep on the blue line, especially after last month’s trade of Ian McCoshen, and they hope that Stillman can work his way into a regular NHL role soon.
  • It looks like the Montreal Canadiens will continue to move forward Charles Hudon back and forth a while longer. According to the AHL transactions page, the Canadiens have assigned Hudon to the Laval Rocket of the AHL, but only as a paper transaction to save cap space. The team is expected to recall him before Tuesday’s game.
  • The Colorado Avalanche have assigned forwards A.J. Greer and Jayson Megna to the Colorado Eagles, the AHL team announced. Megna has seen eight games of action with the Avalanche but has failed to register a point. However, the 29-year-old has fared much better with the Eagles, scoring three goals and five points in nine AHL games. Greer still hasn’t made his season debut with the Avalanche. He returns to the Eagles where he has two goals and 44 penalty minutes in nine games. The team also announced they have recalled defenseman Calle Rosen from the Eagles as well. Rosen, who came over in the Tyson Barrie–Nazem Kadri trade this summer, has fared well in 15 games with the Eagles, posting a goal and eight points. The recall might suggest that defenseman Erik Johnson could be out of the lineup after getting injured Saturday.
  • The New York Rangers announced they have recalled forward Boo Nieves from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL, while returning forward Timothy Gettinger to the minors. Nieves, who appeared in 43 games with the Rangers last season, will be up for the first time this season with the Rangers. He has one goal and eight points in 20 games with Hartford this year. He appeared in two games recently for the Rangers, even picking up an assist on Friday, his first NHL point of his career.
  • The St. Louis Blues have announced a trio of roster moves.  They have recalled defenseman Derrick Pouliot and winger Nathan Walker from AHL San Antonio.  To make room on the roster, they have designed Troy Brouwer as a non-roster player until he receives his work visa.  Pouliot has been quite productive in the minors so far, leading all blueliners with 18 points in 20 games while Walker is averaging over a point per game with 22 in 20 contests.

Nikita Zadorov Out ‘Week-To-Week’ With Broken Jaw

After taking a puck to the face Thursday night in the Colorado Avalanche’s game against the Nashville Predators, defenseman Nikita Zadorov has been listed as “week-to-week” after the blueliner underwent surgery to repair a broken jaw, according to ColoradoHockeyNow’s Adrian Dater.

Dater suggests it might be just a couple of weeks for the 6-foot-6 defenseman as he can eventually wear a mask and play through the injury. Regardless, it’s a big loss for a team that could use the 24-year-old’s size, although the blueliner has been scratched a few times already this season. Zadorov has appeared in 15 games this season, posting a goal, three points and 28 hits. He has broken the 200-hit barrier the previous two years, registering 278 in 2017-18 and 228 last season.

Bednar suggested that the team is still considering whether they intend to recall a defenseman to replace Zadorov in the meantime. The team does have six healthy defensemen, but adding a seventh makes the most sense with Conor Timmins and Calle Rosen as potential recalls.
