Minor Transactions: 10/9/21

It has been a busy day on the transactions front as some teams have pulled up previously cut players to round out their roster for their final preseason games while other players will be looking to catch on either in the minors or overseas.  Here’s a rundown of those moves.

  • The Senators announced (Twitter links) that they’ve recalled defensemen Dillon Heatherington, Mark Kastelic, and Lassi Thomson plus winger Egor Sokolov from AHL Belleville. All four were previously cut in training camp but will be on the roster for their preseason finale against Toronto tonight.
  • With Cam Talbot unavailable due to a personal matter, the Wild announced that they’ve recalled goaltender Andrew Hammond from AHL Iowa. He’ll serve as Kaapo Kahkonen’s backup for their preseason finale in Chicago.
  • Vegas’ AHL affiliate in Henderson revealed (Twitter link) that the Golden Knights have brought up forwards Jonas Rondbjerg and Jake Leschyshyn from the Silver Knights for their final preseason game tonight versus San Jose.
  • Greg McKegg gets another look with the Rangers as Rick Carpinello of The Athletic notes (Twitter link) that the veteran forward has been recalled for tonight’s game against the Islanders. McKegg returned to New York this season after spending 2020-21 with Boston.
  • After having his contract terminated by Winnipeg last month, Joona Luoto is heading back home as Tappara in the SM-liiga announced that they’ve inked the 24-year-old to a one-year deal. Luoto played in Tappara’s program – his hometown team – before making the jump to North America in 2019 where he played in 16 games with the Jets.
  • Marko Dano’s two-month tryout in Trinec was a successful one as the Czech squad announced they’ve extended his contract for the rest of the season. The 26-year-old was non-tendered by Winnipeg this summer after not seeing any NHL action for the first time in his professional career.
  • Kunlun Red Star of the KHL announced (Twitter link) that they’ve signed winger Cliff Pu to a one-year deal. The 23-year-old wrapped up his entry-level contract last season, recording 10 points in 16 games with AHL Cleveland but was non-tendered by Columbus this summer.
  • Veteran winger Brandon Mashinter has decided to call it a career and has joined Jacksonville of the ECHL as an assistant coach. The 33-year-old played in parts of four NHL seasons with the Sharks, Rangers, and Blackhawks, notching five points and 50 PIMS in 64 games.  Mashinter spent last season in Slovakia after a two-year stint in Germany.
  • After clearing waivers, Sonny Milano has been reassigned to the AHL by the Anaheim Ducks. Milano played in just eight games total last season, two of which were with the AHL’s San Diego Gulls. It seems like that total could increase considerably this season unless the Ducks decide he is worthy of a recall at some point.
  • The Dallas Stars have demoted defenseman Andreas Borgman to AHL Texas. However, with 36 players still on their training camp roster, the team has a ways to go. Borgman, 26, suited up for seven games with the Tampa Bay Lightning last season but appears to be no better than tenth on the Stars’ depth chart.

Training Camp Cuts: 10/02/17

Training camp is over for all the clubs around the NHL, and the season begins on Wednesday. By tomorrow evening, all teams must submit their cap-compliant 23-man roster, meaning there will be several cuts today. Sharks Not Pursuing Jaromir Jagr

With the answer to just one little question, San Jose Sharks GM Doug Wilson eliminated the last hope that Sharks fans had of a major free agent addition this off-season. It’s now mid-September, training camps are opening, and San Jose still has yet to make a notable move. They added aging grinder Brandon Bollig, who played exclusively in the AHL last year, Antoine Bibeau, most recently the fifth-string goalie in Toronto, and just a few days ago AHL veteran Brandon Mashinter. Meanwhile, they watched career Shark and franchise leader in just about every category, Patrick Marleau, leave for the Maple Leafs and failed to take advantage of late-summer, affordable replacement options like Drew Stafford (New Jersey) and Thomas Vanek (Vancouver). The Sharks don’t even have an intriguing PTO player in camp.

The last hope of a big-name free agent who could actually help the team in 2017-18 was none other than the legendary Jaromir Jagr. The highest-ranked member of PHR’s Top 50 Free Agents yet to sign at #13 overall, Jagr’s continued availability had been an ongoing story all summer. The 45-year-old future Hall of Famer may seem washed up by age alone, but played in all 82 games with the Florida Panthers last year, registering 46 points. The year before that, Jagr was nearly a 30-goal scorer, racking up 66 points in 79 games for Florida. Somehow, one of the greatest players in NHL history continues to have gas in the tank. In need of replacement scoring and even some veteran guidance for a plethora of young up-and-coming forwards, Jagr seemed like a good fit for San Jose and has continued to be attached to the team in rumors. That ended today. The Athletic’s Kevin Kurz asked Doug Wilson about the possibility of Jagr going to San Jose, to which the GM replied definitively that he did not see the Czech phenom as a fit.

So, the search continues for both sides. Jagr has heard all off-season about teams that “seem like a fit”, but has not had any concrete offers all summer. Last anyone checked in, Jagr was still considering simply playing for HC Kladno of the Czech Liga, a team that he is a part owner of, and then suiting up for the Czech Republic at the 2018 Olympics. After that, perhaps Jagr would draw some interest as a stretch run addition for an NHL team. For now, that seems to be the only option for the aging superstar. As for the Sharks, Wilson nor any of his colleagues have expressed any concern over the team’s lack of off-season additions or potential scoring difficulties. While it is possible that they could still make a trade before the season or early on in the new campaign, the fact that they have no interest in Jagr seemingly means that they are done with free agent additions for the 2017 off-season. The only other notable names left that could be of any interest to San Jose are veterans like Jarome Iginla, Brian Gionta, or Jiri Hudler, all of whom would seem to provide even less upside than Jagr. The Sharks seem content to head into the season with their current group. Maybe a rough start could make them rethink their position on one of the greatest scorers of all time.

The Ottawa Senators re-signed Mike Condon this offseason to a three-year contract despite the fact that they still had Craig Anderson under contract as the de facto starter, and that situation could last even more than just one season. James Gordon of The Athletic spoke with Anderson today, who said he’s leaving any extension negotiations to his agent and GM Pierre Dorion. For his part, Dorion apparently sounded positive on the matter, bringing up an interesting question for the Senators. How much is Anderson really worth?

After an incredibly emotional and inspiring season, Anderson heads into the year at age-36 and coming off a .926 save percentage. There is no question he’s still a near-elite level goaltender in the league, but for how much longer can that continue? Condon signed for $2.4MM per season, leaving plenty of room to keep Anderson under contract in a tandem, but the Senators are not usually a cap team—instead operating on an internal budget—and will have to issue big extensions to some of their players before long. Erik Karlsson leads that list as a pending free agent in the summer of 2019, but he’s joined by Mark Stone, Kyle Turris, Derick Brassard and Cody Ceci who will all need contracts in one form or another during that period.

  • Brandon Mashinter has signed a contract with the San Jose Sharks for the upcoming season, and though the news release doesn’t specify financials it is expected to be a two-way deal since it was announced by Joe Will, the GM of the AHL Barracuda. Mashinter, 28, played all of last season for the Rockford Ice Hogs of the AHL, scoring 30 points in 61 games. A veteran of 64 NHL games, he was originally signed by the Sharks out of the OHL after going undrafted. He’ll be in a depth role for the Barracuda, who were one of the league’s best teams last season.
  • The Athletic’s Corey Pronman has released the first half of his Top 100 Under 25 list, which also includes a healthy honorable mention group. One of the most immediate takeaways surely is how many extremely talented players are in this bottom half, showing how incredibly young the league has skewed in recent years. Players like Adam Larsson and J.T. Miller find themselves lower on the list not because of any lack of talent, but because of the infusion the last few drafts have given the league. When 19-year old players like Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid can come in with such an impact right away, it pushes everyone else down. Carolina leads the way with five names in the 50-100 range, and even Vegas gets onto the list with the inclusion of Shea Theodore.

Chicago Re-Signs Michal Rozsival And Brandon Mashinter

The Blackhawks announced a pair of signings late Thursday morning.  They’ve inked D Michal Rozsival and LW Brandon Mashinter to one year contracts.  Pierre LeBrun of ESPN/TSN reports that Rozsival will earn $600K and Mashinter $575K.  Both amounts are identical to what each player earned in 2015-16.

The 37 year old Rozsival played in 51 games with Chicago last season, picking up a goal and 12 assists in a #6/7 defenseman role, a spot he’ll likely hold on the depth chart again in 2016-17.  The 15 year veteran has played in 941 career NHL games between the Penguins, Rangers, Coyotes, and Blackhawks, recording 67 goals and 239 assists.  He averaged 16:09 per game in ice time last year.

Mashinter split last season between the Blackhawks and their AHL affiliate in Rockford.  In 41 NHL games, he picked up four goals and an assist while playing 7:29 per game.  He also added seven points (4-3-7) in 12 AHL contests.  Prior to last season, Mashinter had been held pointless in his previous 20 NHL games.  He will likely serve as a depth forward for the Blackhawks next year.
