- While Carolina’s original intention might have been to send Pyotr Kochetkov back to the minors when Frederik Andersen returns from his injury, his play has made that much more difficult. Accordingly, Adam Proteau of The Hockey News opines that Antti Raanta might be the odd one out between the pipes. He has a 2.53 GAA with a .900 SV% in 14 starts this season, a decent return on a $2.25MM AAV. While the Hurricanes likely wouldn’t be able to command a sizable return for Raanta’s services, he could be a useful pickup for a team looking for a short-term option between the pipes.
Hurricanes Rumors
Max Pacioretty Could Return Ahead Of Schedule
- The Carolina Hurricanes won’t have Max Pacioretty in the lineup tomorrow, but head coach Rod Brind’Amour said today that it is possible he returns within the next ten games. The veteran forward tore his Achilles in August and was given a six-month recovery timeline – one that he appears well ahead of. Pacioretty scored 19 goals and 37 points in 39 games for the Vegas Golden Knights last season.
Jack Drury Sent To AHL Chicago
- Jack Drury’s recall to Carolina was a short-lived one. Just one day after being brought back up following a paper demotion during the holiday break, the Hurricanes announced that they’ve returned the center to AHL Chicago. The 22-year-old has played in 21 NHL games this season, notching two assists, but is averaging just shy of ten minutes a game which isn’t necessarily ideal for development. Drury has gotten into eight games with the Wolves where he has three points. With Max Pacioretty getting closer to returning, Drury’s stay in the minors might last a little longer this time.
Carolina Hurricanes Recall Jack Drury
Of note, both Raty and Fasching are playing in tonight’s game, and though Drury is not playing tonight, he is listed on the Hurricanes’ roster. Vegas faces off against the Los Angeles Kings later tonight at 7:30 pm PT/10:30 pm ET, so more may be known on their players at that time.
Carolina Hurricanes:
Max Pacioretty No Longer In No-Contact Jersey
Hurricanes winger Max Pacioretty has taken another step towards returning to the lineup as Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News and Observer reports (Twitter link) that the veteran is no longer in a no-contact jersey. Pacioretty has been out for the entire year so far after undergoing offseason surgery to repair a torn Achilles tendon and while he’s still likely to be out a little while longer for conditioning purposes, he’ll be a key addition to Carolina’s lineup for the second half of the season. He had 19 goals and 18 assists in 39 games with Vegas last year but was moved in the offseason as a cap-saving move. Carolina shouldn’t have any issues activating Pacioretty from LTIR when he’s given the green light to return.
Sebastian Aho Won't Play Saturday Or Sunday
- Carolina Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho, who has been out of the lineup since December 6th with a lower-body injury will not play tonight against the Dallas Stars or tomorrow afternoon against the Pittsburgh Penguins, says Hurricanes team reporter Walt Ruff, who spoke with head coach Rod Brind’Amour prior to tonight’s game. On a positive note, Brind’Amour added that Aho was on the ice earlier today, indicating a return could be sooner rather than later. Interestingly, Carolina has done just fine without Aho in the lineup, going 3-0-0 in the process, including back-to-back shutouts of the New York Islanders and Detroit Red Wings. Obviously, the team would still prefer to get one of the NHL’s very best centers back into their lineup as soon as possible, especially considering schedule doesn’t get any easier after tomorrow, facing the New Jersey Devils and the Penguins again this week.
Frederik Andersen Won't Play This Weekend, Justin Robidas To Be Traded In QMJHL
- While Hurricanes goaltender Frederik Andersen participated in practice yesterday, head coach Rod Brind’Amour told reporters including Cory Lavalette of the North State Journal that the netminder won’t dress for either game this weekend. The veteran has been out for the last six weeks but with Pyotr Kochetkov thriving right now as their interim starter, the team can afford to be patient with Andersen. However, it’s a contract year for the 33-year-old though so he’s going to want to get back in the lineup sooner than later. He has a 2.72 GAA with a .891 SV% in eight starts so far this season.
- Still with the Hurricanes, prospect Justin Robidas is expected to be traded in the QMJHL from Val-d’Or to Quebec when the trade window opens up tomorrow, notes Carl Tardif of Le Soleil. The 19-year-old was a fifth-round pick back in 2021 (147th overall) in 2021 and is tied for 13th in league scoring with 14 goals and 26 assists in 26 games so far. Carolina has until June 1st of next year to sign him so these next few months with the Remparts will be crucial for Robidas.
Carolina Hurricanes Re-Assign Maxime Lajoie
Dec 14: A few days later, the Hurricanes have sent Lajoie back to the minor leagues. He played in two games, seeing a total of 13 shifts during his recall.
Dec 8: The Carolina Hurricanes announced this evening that they have recalled defenseman Maxime Lajoie from the Chicago Wolves, their AHL affiliate. No corresponding move was announced. This brings Carolina to a full 23-man roster.
The 25-year-old is in his third season in the Hurricanes organization, having played primarily for the Wolves during that period of times. In fact, the defenseman was recently named captain of the Wolves on November 8th. In 17 AHL games this season, Lajoie has six points, all assists. This won’t be his first time on Carolina’s roster this year either, having played one game for the team back on November 14th.
Originally an Ottawa Senators draft pick in 2016, the bulk of Lajoie’s NHL experience came during the 2018-19 season, where he suited up for 58 games for Ottawa. Since then, he’s played in just 12 NHL games spread over three seasons. Now an AHL veteran and leader, Lajoie has made the most of his time in the AHL recording 93 points in 211 career games.
Oliwer Kaski Signs In SHL
When Oliwer Kaski left North America in 2020, after just one season in the AHL, the Carolina Hurricanes weren’t going to give up his rights completely. The team issued Kaski a qualifying offer, meaning he stayed on their reserve list and could only sign a contract with them if he wanted to return.
Those rights were only held through his age-27 season, though, which is this year for the undrafted defenseman. If Carolina wanted to bring him back, they would have to sign him by the end of June, or Kaski would become an unrestricted free agent.
It doesn’t appear like that will happen, as the Finnish puck-mover has signed a contract with HV71 in the SHL through 2024. That ends a short run in the Swiss league where he found little success, playing 20 games for Lugano this season.
He scored just four points in those games, but that’s not common for Kaski, who has filled the net wherever he plays. Over the last two seasons in the KHL, he scored 26 goals and 67 points in 105 games. When this contract with HV71 ends, he’ll be an unrestricted free agent in North America too, meaning there could potentially be a return.
He’ll also be closing in on 30, though, so he may just continue to be an excellent offensive defenseman overseas, and never realize that dream of playing in the NHL.
Ondrej Kase Resumes Skating
After suffering a concussion in Carolina’s season opener, winger Ondrej Kase has resumed skating, relays team reporter Walt Ruff (Twitter link). While there remains no firm timetable for his return, the fact he has resumed on-ice activities is certainly an important step. That said, with his lengthy concussion history, expect the Hurricanes to proceed very carefully with the 27-year-old. Kase signed a one-year, $1.5MM deal in the offseason to provide Carolina with some secondary scoring, an area in which they’ve had some issues in the early going this season.
