Injury Notes: Klingberg, Senators, Dowd

It looks like the Dallas Stars will receive a huge boost for their game against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night in the form of a healthy John Klingberg. Head coach Rick Bowness said Sunday morning that Klingberg “should” return, but that the team won’t have full confirmation until tomorrow. The 29-year-old defenseman was injured in the team’s season opener and missed the succeeding four games, playing just 10:21 before suffering a lower-body injury. He’ll look to provide a boost with his offensive instincts to a team that’s scored just ten goals through their first five games.

More injury notes from around the league:

  • There’s some updates on the injury front in Ottawa, as TSN reports goalie Matt Murray has been moved to injured reserve with a neck injury after being run into by the Rangers’ Chris Kreider on Saturday afternoon. He’ll miss at least the next ten days. It also appears center Shane Pinto will be out for a shorter term than expected, as head coach D.J. Smith he’s only expected to be absent for a week or two. A prompt return would be a good break for both him and the team, as Pinto had begun to impress in a top-six role.
  • Washington Capitals head coach Peter Laviolette says the status of Nic Dowd for the team’s one-game road trip to Ottawa on Monday night is in question. Dowd is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. He played in all of the team’s overtime loss to the Calgary Flames on Saturday, so even if he does miss that contest, it doesn’t appear he’ll be out for any sort of term. The native of Huntsville, Alabama has one goal in five games this season.

A Look At Johnny Gaudreau's Contract Situation

Flames winger Johnny Gaudreau is one of the more intriguing players in the 2022 UFA class.  He’s not that far removed from being a point-per-game player – a mark he hit as recently as 2018-19 – but his per-game production has dipped the last two seasons.  In a piece for Daily Faceoff, former Sabres assistant GM Steve Greeley examined Gaudreau’s situation, highlighting how term will be a big element as the 28-year-old will likely be looking for that one last big deal over a short-term pact that gets him back to the market in a more favorable cap environment a few years from now.  Gaudreau is in the final year of a deal that carries a $6.75MM AAV and it will cost a bit more than that on his next contract.

Richardson Activated; Gawdin Sent To Minors

The Calgary Flames have activated Brad Richardson off injured reserve in time for tonight’s game against the Detroit Red Wings, while moving Glenn Gawdin to the AHL. Richardson will be making his season debut for the Flames after signing a one-year, $800K deal with the team in the offseason.

Remember, the 36-year-old Richardson is another one of Darryl Sutter’s former Los Angeles Kings and was with the team in 2012 when they won the Stanley Cup. The Flames haven’t been able to put Sutter’s defensive style into practice just yet, allowing eight goals through the first two games.

Glenn Gawdin Clears Waivers

Oct 21: Gawdin has cleared waivers and can be assigned to the minor leagues.

Oct 20: The Calgary Flames have placed depth forward Glenn Gawdin on waivers, according to Chris Johnston of TSN. Gawdin played just over ten minutes in Calgary’s overtime loss earlier this week.

With Brad Richardson approaching a return to the lineup, a roster spot was needed on the Flames and Gawdin is the odd man out. He’ll likely be sent to the minor leagues should he clear, though that perhaps isn’t a guarantee.

In nine career NHL games the 24-year-old Gawdin is still yet to score a goal, but his minor league performance is at least a little intriguing. In 2019-20 he recorded 16 goals and 47 points in 53 games, and really put himself on the map for the Flames as a depth option that could be used higher up in the lineup if necessary.

Just like Nic Petan yesterday though, depth forwards like this are available every few days on waivers. The most likely outcome is that Gawdin clears, is sent down, and has to wait for his next opportunity with the Flames.

Andersson Fined $5,000 For Roughing

  • Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson has escaped without a suspension after his incident with Edmonton Oilers forward Kailer Yamamoto last night. Andersson has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for roughing. The two got into it and it appeared to many as though Andersson delivered a headbutt to Yamamoto’s face, but the league determined that the actual play did not rise to a level of suspension.

Flames Sign Ryan Francis To AHL Tryout

  • The Flames aren’t ready to send Ryan Francis back to junior yet as their affiliate in Stockton announced that they’ve inked the 19-year-old to a tryout agreement. Francis was Calgary’s fifth-round pick (143rd overall) in 2019 and had 50 points in 32 games last season in the QMJHL.  As he turns 20 before December 31st, Francis is eligible to play in the AHL this season.

Snapshots: Konecny, Rieder, Flames

Travis Konecny struggled at time last season but is refocused and ready to resume his upward trajectory as a budding star for the Philadelphia Flyers. However, the 2015 first-round pick could have been in a very different spot to being the new campaign. Sportset’s Elliotte Friedman reports that the Flyers received considerable interest in Konecny this off-season and “easily could have traded him”. However, the team felt their best option was instead to hold on to the young winger and hope that he gets back on track. Konecny’s 61 points in 66 games in 2019-20 had him looking like a future cornerstone player, so his regression to 34 points in 50 games last season caught many off guard. Philadelphia staying loyal to their promising forward could be the fuel he needs to bounce back this year.

  • After failing to earn a contract on a PTO, something he has previously done on more than one occasion, veteran forward Tobias Rieder may finally be moving on from the NHL. After seven seasons and nearly 500 games with five different NHL teams, Rieder’s tryout with the Anaheim Ducks could mark the end of his career in North America. John Matisz of The Score reports that Rieder is expected to sign with the SHL’s Vaxjo Lakers. Although it is only a one-year deal for a 28-year-old player, Rieder will likely have to tear it up in Sweden to get yet another look in the NHL.
  • The Calgary Flames have announced a plethora of hockey operations changes. The most notable move is a shift in coaching personnel with long-time assistant coach and former NHLer Martin Gelinas moving into a development coach role and fellow former assistant Ray Edwards taking on a front office position as Director of Player Development. The team has also added Derek Clancey as a pro scout and David Akerblom, Jason Taylor, and Trevor Hanson as area amateur scouts.

Ducks, Flames Leading Candidates To Acquire Jack Eichel

Jack Eichel has been on the trade block for what seems like forever and has not been on the ice for the Buffalo Sabres this preseason as he continues to await neck surgery. Yet, his market is heating back up. As TSN’s Darren Dreger wrote earlier this week, the Sabres have been pushed by Eichel’s new agent, Pat Brisson, to share medical files with interested parties. The result has been more clarity as to Eichel’s serious suitors, which could finally lead to a trade.

Eichel’s desired surgical cure, which has been at the center of his ongoing feud with the Sabres, is a disc replacement surgery that has never been attempted on an NHL player. By sharing the specifics of Eichel’s injury, teams can gain more insight into the nature of Eichel’s condition and whether they would agree to his preferred route rather than the typical fusion procedure. As Pierre LeBrun reports for The Athletic, this has helped Kevyn Adams and the Sabres strengthen their trade pitch, as some of the unknowns of an Eichel deal have been cleared up. While LeBrun believes that there will still be a conditional aspect to any deal, Buffalo now finally has a chance to finally close a deal and closer to full value.

Among the teams that LeBrun feels have backed off of the Eichel pursuit are the Minnesota Wild and Philadelphia, and even the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings who seemed like top contenders at one point. However, LeBrun notes that the Anaheim Ducks and Calgary Flames have done their due diligence on Eichel’s condition and the ADR surgery and remain interested in the star center.

Though the cost for Eichel remains a mystery, especially with the suspected conditional component, there will still be a considerable price to pay. Anaheim offers a number of young roster forwards, as well as numerous talented prospects. Calgary offers more current star talent, some of whom would have to move for cap purposes, as well as some top prospects. Both teams would be able to make a strong pitch for Eichel and have good reason for doing so. The Flames may be one major piece away from jumping into Stanley Cup contention, while the Ducks have a budding young core and know that Eichel has expressed some desire to play on the west coast.

While LeBrun stops short of saying a trade is imminent, this is first time that concrete conversations have been had with a media source confirming that Eichel talks are occurring. Eichel needed surgery “like yesterday” per LeBrun and both he and the Sabres desperately need to move on, so for the good of all involved, including NHL fans, hopefully this situation will be resolved before too long.

Blake Coleman Suspended For One Preseason, One Regular Season Game

5:36 pm: The NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Coleman will be suspended for one preseason and regular-season game. He’ll miss Calgary’s season opener on the road in Edmonton on October 16th, but will be back for their home opener on October 18th against the Anaheim Ducks.

12:03 pm: The Department of Player Safety has some more work to do, as Blake Coleman will have a hearing today following his hit on Jansen Harkins last night. The Calgary Flames forward hit Harkins while he was already down on his knees, driving his head into the boards. Coleman was issued a boarding penalty and then later in the game received a misconduct along with Harkins when the two came together again.

Because Harkins did not suffer a major injury on the play and Coleman does not have a history of suspension at the NHL level, the penalty here should not be excessive. Still, the hearing implies that the Flames will be without his services for at least the final preseason game tomorrow night, if not the first game of the regular season as well.

This actually isn’t the first incident of Coleman checking from behind. In the NCAA tournament in 2015, Coleman was given a suspension after receiving his third misconduct of the season. The first two were for checking from behind, while the third was for delivering a check to the head. The 29-year-old forward has made a living playing a hard, physical game and often coming right up to the line, and this time appears to have stepped over it. He’ll have to face the consequences, with a decision expected later today.
