Casey Cizikas To Have Hearing For Boarding

The NHL Department of Player Safety announced today that New York Islanders forward Casey Cizikas will have a hearing for boarding Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Brendan Smith.

Cizikas laid the hit on Smith in the first minute of the third period of last night’s game. Cizikas was assessed a two-minute minor for boarding on the play, while Smith left the game after the hit and did not return. Hurricanes head coach Rod Brind’Amour did not have an update on his status postgame.

While Cizikas does have a physical edge to his game, he does not have a history of being fined or suspended by NHL Player Safety, something that ought to work in his favor during this hearing. Cizikas has nine goals and 14 points in 63 games this season in the midst of a rough season offensively and defensively.

 

New York Rangers Activate Kaapo Kakko, Kevin Rooney

Somewhat quietly last night, the New York Rangers activated both Kaapo Kakko and Kevin Rooney from injured reserve, per CapFriendly.

The news couldn’t come at a better time, as the team just lost a Trade Deadline acquisition, Tyler Motte, to an upper-body injury for an indefinite length of time.

Kakko and Rooney were both playing important roles for the Rangers prior to their injuries, but after the team’s multiple moves at the deadline to solidify their depth, it’s unclear Kakko can slot back into the lineup. While Kakko, who has been out since late January with an upper-body injury, had just five goals and 14 points in 37 games, he spent the majority of his time on the top line with Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad. With the success Frank Vatrano has had in that role since coming over from Florida, though, it’s unlikely Kakko slots back into a top-six role for their impending playoff run. Rooney’s role is more solidified, and he’ll undoubtedly replace the mixture of Jonny Brodzinski and Greg McKegg in the team’s fourth-line center spot.

Kakko does still provide value in his return to the lineup, however. After a horrific rookie season defensively, he’s bounced back strongly in the past two seasons to become one of the team’s better defensive forwards at even strength, although he’s not used on the penalty kill. With the Rangers improving drastically in terms of even-strength possession numbers after the deadline, Kakko’s return should only increase that trend.

Snapshots: Meyers, Penguins, Fehr

College free agent center Ben Meyers is expected to begin interviewing with NHL teams on Sunday, reports Michael Russo of The Athletic (subscription link).  The 23-year-old is widely viewed as the top player in this year’s NCAA free agent class and to that end, Russo notes more than two dozen teams are interested in signing Meyers with his hometown team in Minnesota certainly among them.  Meyers, who was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, had 17 goals and 24 assists in 34 games for the Golden Gophers this season plus four points in four contests in the Olympics.  He’s expected to sign a two-year, entry-level deal that will begin this season although he will not be eligible to play in the playoffs if he signs with a team that’s heading for the postseason.

Elsewhere around the hockey world:

  • The Penguins may opt to keep their better prospects in the minors instead of using them to replace injured players over the final few weeks of the season, suggests Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL finds themselves in a close battle for a playoff spot (or play-in position, potentially) and the developmental value of having those prospects in a close race could be more beneficial than sprinkling them into the NHL lineup on a Pittsburgh team that is comfortably in a playoff spot and is simply playing for positioning.
  • Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli examines the future of NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr. He has officially been at the head of the association since December of 2010 and isn’t on a fixed-term contract; the post is his until he chooses to leave or is asked to.  Fehr himself indicated that a plan to transition to his successor “won’t be soon” but Seravalli suggests there is a level of discontentment that could necessitate a change before Fehr wants to step aside.

Injury Updates: Pacioretty, Wild, Stars, Petry

Vegas could get a key player back for tomorrow’s contest against Arizona as Ben Gotz of the Las Vegas Review-Journal relays that winger Max Pacioretty is listed as a game-time decision.  The veteran has missed nearly a month with an undisclosed injury, continuing what has been a tough year on the injury front as he has been limited to just 29 games.  However, the 33-year-old has been quite productive when he has been in the lineup as he has 15 goals and 14 assists.  With the Golden Knights sitting two points out of the last Wild Card spot in the Western Conference heading into Friday’s slate of games, Pacioretty would undoubtedly give them a big boost as they look to get into the postseason.

Other injury updates from around the NHL:

  • The Wild could get a pair of players back for Sunday’s game against Los Angeles as Sarah McLellan of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports (Twitter link) that defenseman Jon Merrill and winger Matt Boldy could both be back. Both players suffered upper-body injuries at the end of March and while Merrill has seen his role scaled back a little bit lately, Boldy has played a crucial role for Minnesota since being recalled in January, collecting 27 points in 35 games.
  • Stars defenseman Esa Lindell plus wingers Jacob Peterson and Denis Gurianov have all been upgraded to game-time decisions for their game on Saturday against New Jersey, notes Matthew DeFranks of the Dallas Morning News. Each player has missed the last three games, Lindell due to an upper-body injury, Peterson a lower-body injury, and Gurianov an illness.  Dallas has a two-point lead on Vegas for the final Wild Card spot in the West and getting those three back will only help their cause.
  • The Canadiens could get defenseman Jeff Petry back for Saturday’s game against Toronto, mentions TVA Sports’ Renaud Lavoie (Twitter link). The veteran has missed the last two weeks with a lower-body injury, the latest frustration in what has been a tough season as the 34-year-old has struggled considerably, notching just 16 points in 57 games while Montreal wasn’t able to find a suitable trade for him at the deadline last month.

Dryden McKay Wins Hobey Baker Award

Minnesota State goaltender Dryden McKay didn’t take home the Mike Richter Award for the best goaltender in college hockey on Friday (Northeastern’s Devon Levi, a Buffalo prospect, got the nod there as well as the Tim Taylor Award for Rookie of the Year).  However, he earned an even bigger award as the NCAA announced (Twitter link) that the netminder has won the Hobey Baker Award which is presented annually to the most outstanding men’s college hockey player in the United States.  He beat out Minnesota center Ben Meyers and Denver winger Bobby Brink (a Philadelphia prospect) for the honor.

McKay actually was a finalist for the award last season that went to then-Wisconsin winger Cole Caufield.  This season, the 24-year-old has had yet another dominant campaign with the Mavericks, posting a 1.27 GAA along with a .934 SV% in 42 games (where he has a 38-4 record with 10 shutouts).  Of course, they have one more game to go as they will take on Denver for the national championship on Saturday.

After that game, several NHL teams are expected to try to sign McKay.  His numbers throughout his four-year college career have been nothing short of stellar (a 1.45 GAA, a .932 SV%, and 34 shutouts in 139 games).  While he’s a bit small compared to a lot of goalies nowadays as teams tend to prefer taller netminders – McKay stands 6’0 – this is a player that many should be willing to make an exception for.

Toronto Maple Leafs Sign Axel Rindell

The Toronto Maple Leafs are bringing one of their prospects across the Atlantic. Finnish defenseman Axel Rindell, one of the team’s three sixth-round picks in 2020, is signing a two-year entry-level contract that will kick in in 2022-23. The team announced that Rindell will sign an AHL professional tryout deal so that he can join the Toronto Marlies for the rest of this season.

Rindell, 21, has been playing in Liiga in his native Finland for the past three seasons. He spent his first two seasons playing for Mikkelin Jukurit, before switching midway through this season to play for Karpat. Rindell has flashed decent offense in Liiga, one of the best men’s leagues outside the NHL, and has 12 points in 26 games for Karpat this season.

Rindell is an undersized defenseman, standing at five-foot-ten and 174 pounds, but like many other undersized blueliners he has carved out his professional career on the back of his skating, puck skills, and abilities on the power play. He represented his country at the 2021 IIHF World Championship, winning a silver medal, and if he can transition his solid play in Liiga to his North American professional career perhaps Toronto will have unearthed a nice find from late in the 2020 draft.

Buffalo Sabres Sign Owen Power

Another Michigan Wolverine has decided to make the transition from college hockey to the NHL. Along with teammate Kent Johnson, Owen Power has decided to ink his NHL deal as the Buffalo Sabres announced the signing of the 2021 first-overall pick on his entry-level contract. He could join the team and enter the lineup before the end of this season.

Power, 19, was as previously mentioned the first pick of the 2021 draft and has been the Sabres’ top prospect since. Standing at six-foot-six and 213 pounds, Power has coveted physical tools for a defenseman. He has flashed offensive upside to his game and has produced well at Michigan where he had 32 points in 33 games this season. Power had 16 points in 26 games as a freshman. It is a widely-held opinion across the league that Power has serious potential to become a do-it-all number-one blueliner, and he joins a surging Buffalo team that already boasts another number-one pick defenseman in Rasmus Dahlin.

Beyond his exploits at Michigan, Power proved his NHL readiness by being selected for the Beijing Olympics, where he registered one assist. While the Sabres, who are 5-2-3 in their last ten games, have run out of runway to make the playoffs this season, the signing of Power adds another jolt of optimism for a market that has to be feeling very confident about their squad going into next season. With top prospects such as Power and Jack Quinn set to enter a lineup that already posts strong young talent such as Dahlin, Peyton Krebs, and Dylan Cozens, perhaps the Sabres’ NHL-record eleven-year playoff drought can finally come to an end in 2022-23.

Blue Jackets Sign Nick Blankenburg

One of Kent Johnson’s Michigan teammates is joining him on the Columbus Blue Jackets. After the team inked the 2021 fifth-overall pick, Columbus announced they also signed the captain of the Michigan Wolverines, Nick Blankenburg. Blankenburg, 23, went undrafted and chose to sign with Columbus as a college free agent. His entry level contract is a one-year deal, lasting for the remainder of the 2021-22 season, and he is expected to join the team alongside Johnson on Monday.

Blankenburg is a veteran of four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he has collected 68 points in his 133-game career. Blue Jackets GM Jarmo Kekalainen referred to Blankenburg as “a talented, smart, really competitive player with great leadership qualities” and stated that the Blue Jackets organization is “thrilled to welcome him.”

While Blankenburg is a bit undersized, standing at five-foot-nine and 175 pounds, it’s not his physicality that has earned him an NHL contract. Blankenburg is a right-shot defenseman who flashed offensive upside in his most recent season as a Wolverine and could help the Blue Jackets as a puck-mover. It remains to be seen if Blankenburg has a true NHL future, but his signing today should afford him the opportunity to make his case to Columbus’ management team that he deserves to be in their future plans as they rebuild their squad.

Blue Jackets Sign Kent Johnson

The stretch run of this Blue Jackets season looks set to become significantly more exciting. The team announced that they have signed top prospect Kent Johnson to a three-year entry-level contract. Johnson is expected to join the team on Monday and is expected to make his NHL debut in the team’s Wednesday contest against the Montreal Canadiens, according to Aaron Portzline of The Athletic.

Johnson, 19, was the fifth overall selection in the 2021 draft, coming off of a freshman season at the University of Michigan where he posted 27 points in 26 games. Johnson is a dazzling playmaker who has become one of the most consistently creative players outside of the NHL this season. In his sophomore season at Michigan, which recently ended in an overtime loss to the University of Denver, Johnson improved his production, posting 37 points in 32 games. Johnson has experience at both winger and center, so while he has been utilized more as a winger it will be interesting to see how Columbus coach Brad Larsen chooses to deploy him.

Additionally, the unique package of skills Johnson brings to the game caught the attention of Hockey Canada’s Olympic selectors, and Johnson represented his country at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where he collected five points in four games. Johnson won’t turn 20 until October, but if his skill and playmaking ability at the college level (and his brief showing at the Olympics) is any indication, he should make the Blue Jackets’ on-ice product a lot more exciting sooner rather than later.

Colton Sissons, Evander Kane Earn Fines

The NHL Department of Player Safety has handed out a pair of fines today, deciding against suspensions for both Nashville Predators forward Colton Sissons and Edmonton Oilers forward Evander Kane.

Kane has earned a $5,000 fine for kneeing Los Angeles Kings defenseman Sean Durzi in last night’s game, the maximum allowable under the CBA. The incident in question took place in the second period, with Kane extending his leg to get a piece of Durzi as the puck was sent up ice. The Oilers forward received a two-minute minor penalty for the hit and will now lose a bit of cash as well.

Sissons meanwhile has earned a $2,500 fine for spearing Ottawa Senators forward Josh Norris in last night’s match. That amount is notably not the maximum, and Sissons did not receive a penalty from the on-ice officials.

While they’ve avoided suspensions this time, both incidents will go on the record for Kane and Sissons, meaning any future transgressions could be penalized more harshly. Still, given how important every game is down the stretch, being available for their teams is obviously the most important thing.
