Snapshots: Strome, Abruzzese, McDonough

Some bad post-Deadline news for Rangers fans strikes, as forward Ryan Strome left today’s game with a lower-body injury and did not return. He’s having another productive season playing alongside Artemi Panarin in the team’s top-six, and that line looked to be bolstered by the addition of Andrew Copp at the deadline. If Strome misses any game action, Copp could be thrust back into a center position for the time being. Strome’s health, especially for the playoffs, is of the utmost importance right now for him and the Rangers.

Some more notes, now from the college world:

  • New addition Nick Abruzzese will join the Toronto Maple Leafs in Boston tomorrow, according to head coach Sheldon Keefe. The Harvard standout signed his entry-level contract with the Leafs yesterday. There’s a solid chance he could slot into the lineup sooner rather than later, and could help bring some more speed and energy to a bottom-six that’s looked lethargic at times with both Jason Spezza and Wayne Simmonds in the lineup. He’s currently the team’s only extra healthy skater on the roster.
  • The Vancouver Canucks won’t be getting a college boost to their lineup, however. The Vancouver Sun’s Ben Kuzma reports that Northeastern’s Aidan McDonough will likely return to the school for his senior year instead of turning pro with Vancouver. McDonough was incredible this season with 25 goals in 38 games, and the 2019 seventh-round pick is quickly rising up the team’s prospect ranks.

Anaheim Ducks Sign Josh Lopina

After his University of Massachusetts was eliminated from the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament on Friday, 2021 draft pick Josh Lopina signed his entry-level contract with the Anaheim Ducks today, per the team. Lopina will sign an amateur try-out contract (ATO) with the AHL’s San Diego Gulls for the remainder of the season, getting a sneak peek of hockey life within the Ducks organization. The terms of his NHL deal are not yet available.

Lopina was a bit of a surprise pick last year in the fourth round, but the double-overager came into the draft with a strong freshman season at UMass under his belt (23 points in 29 games) and an NCAA championship. He’s improved on those numbers this season, scoring 12 goals and 27 points in 27 games, the first time at any recorded level that Lopina has had a point-per-game season.

Undoubtedly a late bloomer, Lopina will get a chance to continue his upward rise in the Ducks organization. Likely destined for a full-time AHL role next season, he’ll get a chance to grow there alongside other Ducks youngsters like Jacob Perreault and the newly-acquired Drew Helleson.

Injury Notes: Benning, Wood, Sorokin

The Nashville Predators announced this afternoon that the team activated defenseman Matt Benning off injured reserve. Benning has been listed as day-to-day with an undisclosed injury for almost two weeks now, last playing in the team’s March 13th win against Minnesota. In his second season in Nashville, Benning has tallied 10 assists in 53 games and is again providing solid defensive depth at the bottom of the lineup. The team’s defensive depth is being stretched thin with injuries to both Mark Borowiecki and Dante Fabbro, so his return to the lineup carries some extra importance as the Predators look to lock down a playoff spot as the season winds to a close.

More from around the NHL today:

  • Another name is coming off injured reserve — New Jersey Devils forward Miles Wood. He’ll play his first game of the season tonight against the Canadiens, sitting out all year up until this point with a hip injury sustained during training camp. Wood is likely to draw in on the fourth line alongside youngsters Michael McLeod and Nathan Bastian, and his physical game should give New Jersey’s forward group an edge that it’s lacked all season long. Up until this year, Wood had at least 10 goals and 20 points in four straight seasons.
  • New York Islanders head coach Barry Trotz said after today’s game against Tampa Bay that goalie Ilya Sorokin suffered an upper-body injury that took him out of the game after the second period. It’s unclear whether Sorokin will travel with the team to Columbus for their next game. If he’s out of the lineup, it’s a huge blow to any sliver of hope the Islanders had at making a miracle run into the playoffs. Quietly, Sorokin has been one of the NHL’s best this season, buoying the Islanders with his six shutouts and .927 save percentage in 42 starts. Coming into the game against Tampa Bay, he hadn’t had a save percentage under .929 in his last five games.

 

Philadelphia Flyers Sign Noah Cates

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed forward prospect Noah Cates to his entry-level contract, per the team. It’s a two-year contract that begins this season and will take him through to the summer of 2023.

Noah is the younger brother of Jackson Cates, also in the Philadelphia system, playing mostly with the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms this season. Both brothers attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth. They were eliminated from the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament yesterday, paving the way for the younger Cates to join the Flyers.

Drafted 137th overall in 2017, the 23-year-old native of Stillwater, Minnesota joins Philadelphia after serving as Duluth’s captain for back-to-back seasons and scoring a goal in four games for the United States at the 2022 Winter Olympics. In his final season at Duluth, Cates tallied 11 goals and 13 assists for 24 points in 37 games, nine points short of his career-high (33) that he set in 2019-20.

Cates can join the Flyers immediately, and could potentially play his first NHL game as soon as Tuesday, which is ironically in Minnesota against the Wild.

Latest On Jakob Chychrun

While many may have expected Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun to be among the bigger names moved on trade deadline day on Monday, that did not happen. Chychrun remained a Coyote, and he will likely re-enter the trade conversation after this season concludes and the offseason enters full swing. Teams typically prefer to make more significant trades in the offseason, because the market for the player being shopped is generally larger. Less teams are willing to take a sledgehammer to their roster to be able to pay the price for a significant player when they are in the middle of their season, so it makes sense that Coyotes GM Bill Armstrong would wait until this summer to sell his biggest trade asset. But despite that strategy making sense, it may not have been the preferred route for all parties involved. According to Craig Morgan of PHNX.com (subscription required) Chychrun “welcomed” the idea of being traded to another club at the deadline and was “disappointed” that no deal was eventually reached.

While that may come as a surprise to some observers, just one look at the NHL’s standings could explain his reported stance more clearly. With the Montreal Canadiens’ win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Coyotes now sit last in the NHL with a 20-40-4 record. Armstrong has taken a no-holds-barred approach to rebuilding the team, and that approach means the Coyotes could be a few seasons away from truly focusing on winning. Morgan reports that Chychrun “wants to win now” and as a result, this approach Armstrong is taking is unlikely one that Chychrun would like to be around for the long haul. Morgan also states that Chychrun has “become unhappy” with his utilization and role under coach Andre Tourigny, which could also factor into his willingness to depart the Coyotes.

Given his success last season (he scored 18 goals and 41 points in the shortened 56-game season) and his relative youth (he is only 23 years old) there are many who believe that Chychrun is the kind of player the Coyotes should be building around, rather than trading. But Armstrong’s modus operandi for his entire tenure as Coyotes GM has been to extract as much long-term value as possible from players, and a player like Chychrun represents an extremely attractive trade asset from his perspective. If NHL clubs traded significant future assets for rental defensemen like Ben Chiarot at this deadline, Armstrong has to be expecting teams to offer significant packages for Chychrun, who is on a bargain $4.6MM AAV contract that runs through the 2024-25 season. If Armstrong is all-in on his rebuild of the Coyotes, entertaining an offseason bidding war for Chychrun is the sort of move that fits his plan perfectly. So, given Morgan’s recent reporting on Chychrun’s frame of mind on his future, it seems as though that sort of offseason trade sweepstakes is something Chychrun would welcome as well.

Colin Miller Enters COVID Protocol

While COVID-related absences have slowed down significantly since last season and earlier this season, they are not totally a thing of the past just yet. The Buffalo Sabres have announced that defenseman Colin Miller has been placed in the NHL’s COVID-19 Protocol, and will be out for the foreseeable future. The Sabres are set to take on the New York Rangers tonight, so Miller will obviously be unable to play in that game as the Sabres might have originally planned.

This loss will not likely be anything of major concern for the Sabres, who are 6th in the Atlantic Division with a 23-33-9 record. The remaining games of their season have pride at stake more than anything else, so losing Miller to the COVID protocol is unlikely to make anyone in the Sabres organization lose any sleep. As Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News reports, Miller’s normal defense partner Mark Pysyk will also not suit up for tonight’s game versus the Rangers, and in his (and Miller’s) place, Casey Fitzgerald and Will Butcher will re-enter the lineup. In a media availability, Sabres coach Don Granato stated that he wanted Butcher and Fitzgerald to play as a pair because they had been “skating together all week,” so the loss of Miller to COVID protocol may have the unintended consequence of making it easier for Granato to slide that pairing into his lineup.

For Miller, this absence is not likely one he welcomes but also not one that looks to be any major setback to his career, similar to the COVID absences of many other players this season. Miller has had an improved season this year compared to last, although he has struggled to stay in the lineup with any great degree of consistency. He has 14 points in 36 games this season, an improvement on his 12 points in 48 games last season. For Miller, who is a pending unrestricted free agent as his $3.875MM AAV contract is expiring, the hope has to be that he misses only a few days thanks to this development.

Update On Artturi Lehkonen

March 27: In advance of the Avalanche’s match tonight against the Minnesota Wild, The Athletic’s Peter Baugh issued an update on the immigration situation of newly-acquired Avalanche forward Artturi Lehkonen, who has yet to play a game for the team. Lehkonen is reportedly “still in a holding pattern” with regard to his immigration paperwork, and it is unclear if that will be resolved by the time the Avalanche take the ice against the Wild.

March 25: The Colorado Avalanche paid a significant price to acquire forward Artturi Lehkonen from the Montreal Canadiens on Monday’s trade deadline. They sent the Canadiens a 2024 second-round pick and defenseman Justin Barron, the team’s 2020 first-round pick. Avalanche GM Joe Sakic made the deal likely with the idea that Lehkonen would be able to help the team prepare for the playoffs and find chemistry on his new team as the Avalanche play to secure their playoff spot. But despite those hopes, it is unclear when Lehkonen, who is healthy, will be making his debut with the Avalanche. In his media availability today, Avalanche coach Jared Bednar stated that the process of securing Lehkonen a visa so he can play for the Avalanche is still ongoing, and until it’s completed, he can only practice with the team, and not play in their games. Adrian Dater of Colorado Hockey Now added that “as of this moment,” Lehkonen’s immigration paperwork was still incomplete.

While this development does not figure to do any real damage to the Avalanche’s ability to make the playoffs (they have a 100% chance of making the playoffs, per MoneyPuck.com) it does mean that the process of getting Lehkonen settled in the Avalanche lineup could be stalled until further notice. Part of the reason Lehkonen was such an attractive trade asset for the Avalanche was his versatility. He routinely played in many different situations and on many different lines in Montreal, and it’s with that versatility that Lehkonen could make a major impact on the makeup of the Avalanche lineup. But with the holding pattern the team finds itself in concerning Lehkonen’s immigration paperwork, finding the best fit for their prized acquisition before the playoffs begin could be more challenging.

But, as has been already mentioned, the Avalanche are under no serious threat to miss the playoffs. They currently sit first in the Central with a 45-14-5 record and have a fifteen-point lead over the second-place Minnesota Wild. But like many of the other contending teams, the Avalanche’s success this regular season was the basic expectation for their club. The players and the organization as a whole will be judged based on their playoff success, and that’s where this Lehkonen setback may be slightly more concerning. Lehkonen was highly effective in Montreal’s run to the Stanley Cup Final last season, as a crucial third wheel on the team’s Phillip Danault-centered shutdown line. Lehkonen had extensive experience playing with Danault and Brendan Gallagher before that, and by the time he was called into action to replace Tomas Tatar early in the Canadiens’ first-round series versus the Toronto Maple Leafs, he was able to hit the ground running. Getting that sort of player was seemingly Sakic’s goal in trading for the Finnish winger, but these immigration issues could prove to be a bit of a setback to fully integrating Lehkonen into Sakic’s juggernaut Avalanche squad.

Ottawa Senators Sign Jake Sanderson

The Ottawa Senators announced that they have signed defenseman Jake Sanderson to a three-year, entry-level contract. The financial terms of the deal have not yet been announced, however the contract will take effect immediately with Sanderson expected to join the club in the coming days.

As mentioned earlier, Sanderson was close to signing with the Senators after his season at the University of North Dakota came to an end earlier this week. Although Sanderson is still recovering from a hand injury suffered on March 5th, Ottawa wanted to get their star prospect into the organization and around the team as soon as possible, getting him accustomed to the team and lifestyle, and importantly, around team doctors and training staff as he recovers. Ottawa also hopes to have Sanderson in the lineup once he is fully healthy, and before the team’s season concludes on April 29th.

The fifth-overall pick in 2020 by Ottawa, Sanderson has found himself among the game’s best prospects, and has impressed at UND. After playing with the US National Team Development Program, Sanderson began playing for UND during the 2020-21 season, putting up two goals and 13 assists in in 22 games. This season, Sanderson was named an alternate captain for UND and took additional strides, posting eight goals and 18 assists in 23 games. Despite playing in just 23 of UND’s 39 games, Sanderson was third on the team in scoring.

In addition to missing time due to injury, Sanderson also missed games for UND as a result of playing in the suspended IIHF World Junior Championships, where he served as Team USA’s captain, as well as playing for Team USA at the Winter Olympics in Beijing.

St. Louis Blues Sign Matt Kessel To Entry-Level Contract

The St. Louis Blues announced they have signed 2020 fifth-round pick Matt Kessel to a two-year, entry-level contract that is set to begin in 2022-23. Kessel will report to the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds of the AHL on a tryout, where he will remain for the rest of the season. Additional financial terms of the contract have not yet been made available.

Kessel has spent the past three seasons on the blueline for UMass Amherst, winning a National Title last season. Kessel had six goals and 11 assists in 37 games this season for UMass, however his most impressive season may have been 2020-21, where he logged 10 goals and 13 assists in 20 games. Prior to his time at UMass, Kessel played three seasons in the USHL, including a 19-point, 62-game season for the Sioux Falls Stampede in 2018-19.

For now, Kessel will join Springfield on a tryout where he can adjust to the professional game. His contract will kick in next season, when Kessel can try to establish his place within the Blues’ organization.

AHL Shuffle: 03/27/22

It’s a fairly busy day of hockey in the NHL, with eight games on the schedule. This afternoon, the New York Islanders host the Tampa Bay Lightning in a rematch of the 2021 Eastern Conference Finals, and later this evening, an Eastern Conference heavyweight matchup as the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Florida Panthers. While the NHL action is happening, there should still be plenty of small transactions around the hockey world to keep updated.

Metropolitan Division:

  • A day after sending him down to the Utica Comets of the AHL, the New Jersey Devils have re-called defenseman Kevin Bahl. The hulking defenseman has yet to record a point in five NHL games this season, but has three goals and 12 assists in 49 games at the AHL level.
  • The New York Islanders re-called defenseman Grant Hutton from the Bridgeport Islanders of the AHL on an emergency basis. Hutton saw his first NHL action back in November amid the Islanders’ COVID outbreak, going without a point in five games. The 26-year-old defenseman will draw into the lineup for the Islanders’ afternoon game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Atlantic Division:

  • The Ottawa Senators announced that they have swapped a pair of goaltenders with the AHL’s Belleville Senators. Filip Gustavsson was re-assigned to Belleville, while Mads Sogaard was brought up to Ottawa. Gustavsson made his NHL debut for Ottawa last season, impressing in nine games, but has struggled over 15 NHL games this season with an .886 save-percentage and 3.78 goals-against average. Sogaard, Ottawa’s second-round selection, 37th overall, in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, has yet to make his NHL debut, but has been solid in the AHL this season with a .906 save percentage an 2.87 goals-against average in 31 games.

Central Division:

  • The Nashville Predators have activated defenseman Matt Benning off of injured reserve, the team announced. Benning, 27, had been on the injured list since March 13th with an upper-body injury and has no goals and ten assists in 53 games so far this season. The Predators are seeking to punch their ticket to one of the Western Conference’s playoff series’, and Benning’s return should help them get across that line.

Pacific Division:

  • Forward Lane Pederson was re-assigned to the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL a day after the San Jose Sharks recalled him to play in Saturday’s win over the Anaheim Ducks. Pederson has just two assists in 27 games with the Sharks this season, but does have an impressive six goals and four assists in 11 games for the Barracuda.
