Poll: Which Team Had The Best Free Agent Frenzy?

After nearly $800MM in contracts was handed out on the first day of free agency, and another $133MM the next, things have finally started to quiet down. Just 14 of our top 50 free agents are still available, and several of those names are expected to already be in agreement with the New York Islanders–who will release contract details when they’re good and ready.

Though a few more deals may come down the pipe, the true difference-makers are almost all spoken for. So who had the best free agent frenzy?

The Boston Bruins were unable to convince David Krejci to return, with the veteran forward deciding to head back to the Czech Republic instead, but they still had a pretty impressive haul. Nick Foligno, Erik Haula, Linus Ullmark, Derek Forbort, and Tomas Nosek all should figure into their NHL plans for next season, giving the team some pretty impressive depth options behind the still-imposing core.

The New Jersey Devils added the best player on the market in Dougie Hamilton, bringing in a veteran goaltender in Jonathan Bernier as well. That young core will now be asked to turn the corner from rebuilding to contender, given how much money the front office doled out. The Carolina Hurricanes meanwhile used the space created by Hamilton’s departure to add several players, including a brand new goalie tandem of Frederik Andersen and Antti Raanta. Fan-favorite Jordan Martinook is also back after seeing what else was out there on the open market.

Ryan Suter may already be 36, but he was chased by several teams before the Dallas Stars landed him on a four-year deal. Dallas also brought in Braden Holtby, Luke Glendening, Jani Hakanpaa and Michael Raffl in a strong showing. While that certainly doesn’t make their roster any younger, it does provide some added depth to a team that was in the Stanley Cup Final in 2020.

The Edmonton Oilers spent a lot of money, bringing in Zach Hyman, Cody Ceci, and Derek Ryan, while re-signing Tyson Barrie, but some will still argue they aren’t improved enough. Time will tell on the decision to go back to a Mike Smith–Mikko Koskinen goaltending tandem while spending the cap space elsewhere–unless of course, GM Ken Holland makes a trade to further solidify the crease.

Adding David Savard, Mike Hoffman, Cedric Paquette and Mathieu Perreault to a roster in Montreal that just made the finals will excite fans, but the Canadiens were also forced to bid adieu to Philipp Danault. It’s tough to know if Montreal has done enough to contend for the Stanley Cup again, or if the loss of captain Shea Weber will be devastating to their overall play.

There are several other teams who could be in the mix for the “winners”, including the Seattle Kraken who shelled out more than $75MM on three players, and the St. Louis Blues who replaced some outgoing talent by signing Brandon Saad on day two, but who do you think had the best free agent frenzy? Florida Panthers Agree To Terms With Sam Montembeault

With Chris Driedger now in Seattle, there is an open spot as the third-string goaltender for the Florida Panthers. The team signed Christopher Gibson earlier this week, but now have their internal candidate locked up as well. The Panthers have agreed to terms with Sam Montembeault on a one-year, two-way contract. CapFriendly reports that the deal is worth $750K in the NHL, $250K in the AHL, and has a $300K guarantee.

Montembeault, 24, played 25 games for the Panthers in the two seasons before 2020-21, posting a 9-8-3 record and an .892 save percentage. With the emergence of Driedger and the addition of Spencer Knight, his spot as an injury fill-in for the NHL squad was lost. This year he went 8-4-1 for the Syracuse Crunch, posting an .898 save percentage as the Panthers shared an affiliate with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Next season, he’ll likely head to the Charlotte Checkers for plenty of playing time, though waivers will now be required to get him to the minor leagues. The 77th overall pick in 2015, Montembeault still has plenty of time to polish his game enough to challenge for an NHL spot somewhere around the league. He seemed on that track in 2019-20 when he had a strong .918 for the AHL club, something he’ll try to get back to this time around.

With Montembeault signing, it brings some attention to a goaltending depth chart that is relatively thin. He and Gibson have 41 NHL games combined, meaning if Sergei Bobrovsky or Knight get injured, there will be an inexperienced option coming in to replace them. Beyond those four the organization doesn’t even have another goaltender signed to an NHL contract, something that will likely change in the coming weeks.

Tampa Bay Lightning Sign Sean Day

The Tampa Bay Lightning have signed restricted free agent defenseman Sean Day, who was issued a qualifying offer last month. The one-year, two-way deal will pay Day $750K in the NHL and $100K in the minors with a $125K guarantee, per CapFriendly.

Day, 23, was originally selected in the third round by the New York Rangers in 2016 after being one of the few players to ever receive exceptional status in the OHL. The young defenseman struggled to find his way in the Rangers system, bouncing back and forth between minor league levels, but seemed to turn things around this year with the Syracuse Crunch. In fact, Day recorded 15 points in 29 games with Syracuse, leading all Crunch defenders.

There’s always been a huge ceiling for the 6’3″ Day, who played defense in the OHL at the age of 15, but a lack of consistency has stalled his development. If the Lightning, who have one of the most successful development systems in the entire NHL, can ever unlock the potential, they’ll have found another gem on the scrap heap. Day had his entry-level contract terminated with the Rangers in 2020, only to sign a one-year deal with the Lightning a few weeks later.

Tampa Bay now has just one RFA left to sign in Ross Colton, who is arbitration-eligible. Colton scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal for the Lightning and could be looking at a healthy arbitration award after scoring nine goals and 12 points in 30 games during a successful rookie season. The deadline to file for arbitration is at 4pm today.

Patrick Russell Signs In Sweden

Another one of the Edmonton Oilers’ unrestricted free agent forwards has found a new home. Patrick Russell has signed a two-year contract with Linkoping HC of the SHL, returning to the program he played for in junior.

Russell, 28, suited up just eight times for the Oilers this season, registering two assists. Originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of St. Cloud State, the Danish forward ended up playing 59 games over the last three years with Edmonton. Amazingly, he failed to record a single goal despite generating 76 shots on net. If he fails to return to North America, his NHL career will end with zero goals and seven points.

For years now, the Oilers have been trying to find a mix of forwards that can give Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl some help. With the additions of Zach Hyman, Warren Foegele, and Derek Ryan, they’ll try again to make a more balanced attack. Russell, who was a strong player for the Bakersfield Condors when in the minor leagues, will end up back overseas after failing to fill one of those bottom-six roles.

Los Angeles Kings Sign Brayden Burke

After acquiring him in a trade last month, the Los Angeles Kings have signed Brayden Burke to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will carry an NHL salary of $750K.

Burke, 24, will actually be a Group VI unrestricted free agent next summer unless he ends up playing the majority of the season with the Kings. The undrafted forward has spent all three of his professional seasons at the minor league level, but scored at a better than point-per-game pace in 2019-20 and returned with 14 in 28 games this year. He managed just a single goal for the Tucson Roadrunners but should see that number rebound in the Kings system if he’s sent to the minor leagues.

That’s likely where his future lies, though perhaps he’ll be able to make his NHL debut this year with Los Angeles. The former WHL star has a high offensive ceiling, especially on the powerplay, but is undersized and still needs work away from the puck. If he does go to Ontario, he represents a potential first-line player for them as the AHL looks to get back into a normal schedule.

Marc-Andre Fleury To Play For Chicago Blackhawks

When the Chicago Blackhawks tweeted out a flower emoji this morning, it could only mean one thing. Marc-Andre Fleury has decided he will report for the Blackhawks and play out the finals season of his contract in Chicago, according to several reports including Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff.

Fleury was acquired by the Blackhawks last month, and because of his stated desire to play the rest of his career in Vegas (and his obvious connection to the Golden Knights franchise), reports immediately surfaced that he may not report for the Blackhawks. Fleury’s agent explained that the Vezina-winning goaltender would take some time to discuss his future with his family. That decision has now been made, and the 36-year-old will be in a Blackhawks uniform this season.

That means on January 8, 2022, Fleury will face the Golden Knights for the first time, less than a year after winning the Vezina Trophy as the face of the franchise. The first ever star for hockey in Vegas, Fleury actually experienced something of a career renaissance with the expansion franchise. Though he had won three Stanley Cup championships with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the veteran goaltender had been passed over during the most recent ones in favor of Matt Murray. The Penguins decided to send him to Vegas in the expansion draft as he was getting older and expensive.

The Golden Knights welcomed him with open arms, and Fleury had the best stretch of his career with the team. In parts of 13 seasons with the Penguins, he posted a .912 save percentage and never finished higher than seventh in Vezina Trophy voting. In four years with Vegas, Fleury posted a .917 and finished in the top-five for Vezina voting three times, winning it this season after posting a .928.

If that’s the kind of goaltending Chicago receives, it will be a huge upgrade on the 2020-21 season. Heading into the year it wasn’t clear at all who would be the starter, but Kevin Lankinen emerged early on as a rookie sensation. The grind of a condensed schedule eventually kicked in though, and Lankinen would finish with just a .909 save percentage and a 17-14-5 record. The other two goaltenders in Chicago fared even worse, and their team overall posted a .906. If Fleury, who was acquired for basically nothing, can continue with his strong play, the Blackhawks are suddenly a little more interesting to watch in the Central Division playoff race.

Carolina Hurricanes Sign Stefan Noesen

The Carolina Hurricanes continue to add to their depth, this time agreeing to terms with free agent forward Stefan Noesen. The one-year, two-way deal will pay Noesen $750K at the NHL level, $250K at the AHL level and comes with a $300K minor league guarantee.

Noesen, 28, split last season between the San Jose Sharks and Toronto Maple Leafs, spending more time in the AHL for both organizations. He suited up just once for Toronto and five times for San Jose this year, the fewest NHL games he has played since 2015-16. At that point he was a struggling first-round talent that couldn’t seem to break through, now he’s a veteran depth player that rarely receives a full-time role.

In his 205-game career, Noesen has scored 31 goals and 54 points. None of those came in his six 2020-21 NHL contests, and it’s been several years since he recorded his career-high of 13 goals and 27 points. In Carolina, he’ll likely be used as minor league depth or injury replacement should the NHL roster go through some difficult times. The Hurricanes have added plenty of depth this summer as they hope to go on another long playoff run in 2022.
