Poll: Who Will Win The 2018 IIHF World Championship?

As the bronze medal game gets underway at the 2018 IIHF World Championship, Sweden and Switzerland prepare for their gold medal clash this afternoon. The meeting could be considered a lopsided affair, with the Swedes stomping through the tournament with no problem, but don’t call the Swiss underdogs in front of Canada and Finland, two powerhouses that they’ve already taken down.

The game is something of a rarity for Switzerland, who has collected just one medal at the tournament since 1953. That was a silver in 2013, something they hope to better this time around.

Players on both sides know each other quite well. Sweden received a huge boost mid-tournament when the Nashville Predators were eliminated, meaning Filip Forsberg, Viktor Arvidsson and Mattias Ekholm could all join. The Presidents Trophy-winning players immediately made an impact at the tournament, but there were several others that left Nashville for Denmark.

Roman Josi and Kevin Fiala have starred in Switzerland’s two elimination wins, with the latter providing the quick pass to put them up over Canada in the second period. They’ll have to take on their Nashville brethren this afternoon, and hope they can do something to crack the impenetrable Swedish defense.

The game is scheduled for 1:15pm (CT).

Red Wings Notes: Larkin, Athanasiou, Fulcher

Drafting Dylan Larkin was the equivalent of hitting the NHL talent jackpot writes the Detroit Free Press’ Helene St. James. Calling him the foundation of Detroit’s rebuilding process, Larkin fell to Detroit in the 2014 NHL Draft. St. James assesses that the 21-year-old center is captain material and that the Red Wings have a chance to build around a player that could lead them back to their familiar days of contention. Of course, the Red Wings have been reluctant to actually rebuild and instead, opt to sign free agents in the hopes of making the playoffs, which blocks the progress of younger players. Larkin was the exception, as his performance was too strong to ignore right out of his first training camp in 2015, and he’s been a mainstay on the roster since.

  • St. James also answers questions about Andreas Athanasiou, the polarizing forward who dazzles with his speed and scoring prowess but perplexes with his inability to find regular ice time due to what appears to be conflicts with management. After holding out to start the 2017-18 season, Athanasiou did not live up to the billing Detroit was hoping for–but many in Hockeytown would argue he was never given the chance. She quotes head coach Jeff Blashill as saying… “that consistency level and work ethic and compete is going to be critical for AA.” It sounds like a tug of war between a player and management making some wonder if Athanasiou will find himself shipped out of town. St. James writes that with his numbers dropping, the return wouldn’t be what Detroit would want.
  • Red Wings prospect Kaden Fulcher is featured in a London Free Press article, extolling the performance of the youngster who has been strong between the pipes for the Hamilton Bulldogs en route to a Memorial Cup appearance. Fulcher signed a three-year entry level contract with the Red Wings and MLive’s Ansar Khan explains that Fulcher’s improvement is a reflection of his work ethic. The Red Wings expect him to compete for a job in Grand Rapids and should that not pan out, he would go to either the Toledo Walleye of the ECHL or back to Hamilton for his overage junior year.

Chicago Blackhawks’ Improvement Coming From Within

2017-18 wasn’t a success for the Chicago Blackhawks. For a team that registered 109 points in the previous season, anything short of Stanley Cup contention would seem disappointing. Disappointment may have been the nicest way of expressing how fans felt after the season began and the team immediately, obviously, wasn’t the same beast that had finished first in the Western Conference in 2016-17.

Maybe that should have been expected after an offseason saw incredible turnover to the roster, with Artemi Panarin, Marian Hossa, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Brian Campbell, Marcus Kruger, Scott Darling and several others fail to return for a variety of reasons. But, with familiar faces like Brandon Saad and Patrick Sharp back in town, there was hope that they could maintain their Stanley Cup window.

It wasn’t to be, as Chicago recorded just 76 points and failed to even be in the playoff race for much of the season. Saad failed to record 20 goals, Jonathan Toews registered the worst offensive season of his career, and Corey Crawford struggled through injury.

Disappointing, to say the least.

But, with all of those negatives sticking out there may be some who have overlooked the positives from this season’s edition of the Chicago Blackhawks. Alex DeBrincat burst onto the scene with 28 goals an 52 points as a rookie, just a year after he was cut from the US World Junior team. His knack for finding open ice didn’t disappear at the NHL level, and the 20-year old winger looks like he should have several 30-goal seasons in his career.

Jordan Oesterle went from NHL cast-off to 20-minute defenseman overnight, and looks like a legitimate top-4 player for the coming years. He’ll cost the Blackhawks just $650K next season, an incredible value for a player that they’ll rely on heavily.

That brings us to Nick Schmaltz, who proved he could be an offensive contributor in the NHL with 52 points, and is the key to much of the Blackhawks success going forward. Players like Schmaltz, who were selected relatively high by Chicago in recent years, must start paying off if they’re to get back to their championship level.

Toews, Kane, Brent Seabrook and Duncan Keith aren’t getting any younger, and their contracts will continue to be tough to build around. There aren’t any free agent saviors coming to Chicago without further complicating their salary structure, perhaps to the point where it is untenable. No, the team must find success through internal development, and it looks like that is starting to happen.

The team traded Ryan Hartman, their top pick from 2013, for another first-round selection this season and prospect Victor Ejdsell. That likely won’t be happening with Schmaltz (the top selection from 2014) or DeBrincat (2016), or with Henri Jokiharju (2017) who could be a key to the whole thing. Jokiharju has developed wonderfully so far in the WHL, where he recorded 71 points in 63 games this year for the Portland Winterhawks and could be a real difference-maker on the NHL blue line in short order.

Chicago holds eight picks in this year’s draft, and they must use them to bring more talent into the system. The only way Toews, Kane and others get back to the level of success they’re used to, is if internal options take another step forward.

Sweden To Take On Switzerland At IIHF World Championship Final

The 2018 IIHF World Championship final will feature a stunning matchup, with defending champions Sweden taking on Switzerland. The Swedes annihilated the USA earlier today, winning 6-0 on the back of another great performance from Anders Nilsson. Late additions in Patric Hornqvist and Viktor Arvidsson made a big difference again, and the Swedes are looking about as unstoppable as a team can in an international tournament. They are undefeated so far, and have an All-Star level lineup from nearly top to bottom.

Switzerland on the other hand has had to battle to get to this point, knocking off Finland and Canada on the way to the finals. Today, the Swiss outlasted a Canadian onslaught in the third period to win 3-2, as Connor McDavid couldn’t carry his team to victory. The Swiss will have to try and puncture the outstanding Swedish defense, including Oliver Ekman-Larsson, John Klingberg, Mattias Ekholm, Hampus Lindholm and Adam Larsson. Roman Josi and company will have a tough test, but can’t be ruled out after knocking out two powerhouses already.

The game is scheduled for 1:15pm (CT) tomorrow afternoon.

Team USA and Canada aren’t done though, as they’ll play the bronze medal game in the morning. After such an unexpected crushing defeat this morning, Patrick Kane and the rest of the US will have to try to bounce back and stop taking retaliatory penalties. Canada, who lost in an even bigger upset, will need to keep their heads in the tournament if they want to medal once again. Their game is set for 8:45am.

For Switzerland, this will be just the second medal since 1953 and a chance at gold for the first time in history. The team won silver back in 2013 on a similar improbable run, but could even top that by taking down the undefeated Swedes tomorrow afternoon.

Winnipeg Jets Sign Mikhail Berdin To Entry-Level Deal

The Winnipeg Jets announced they have signed USHL goaltender Mikhail Berdin to a three-year entry-level contract. The 20-year-old goaltender was the Jets’ sixth-round pick in the 2016 draft and then came over from Russia to play for the Sioux Falls Stampede for the past two years.

In the USHL, the young goalie has been dominant. In the 2016-17 season, he picked up 14 wins in 31 games and had a 2.73 GAA and an impressive .925 save percentage. He took that to a new level this past season when he won 24 games in 45 appearances. He had a 2.65 GAA and a .921 save percentage this year. His save percentage ranked him fourth in the USHL and he was named goaltender of the week three times in the last two years.

At 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, Berdin is known to have quick reflexes and is adept at blocking difficult to track shots. He is known to have a good hockey mind. Internationally, he won a silver medal for Russia in the 2015 World Junior A Challenge with a 0.80 GAA and a .968 save percentage.

Poll: Should The Winnipeg Jets Re-Sign Paul Stastny?

There is much to be proud of if you’re a Winnipeg Jets’ fan, but while most fans are paying attention to their play in the Western Conference Finals. And while the Jets find themselves down 3-1 against the Vegas Golden Knights, Winnipeg will need to find a way to win three in a row. To do that, they will need success from multiple lines, including the success of the team’s second line, including Patrik Laine, Nikolaj Ehlers and trade deadline acquisition Paul Stastny.

When the team traded for Stastny for prospect Erik Foley, a 2018 first-round pick and a conditional 2020 fourth-round pick, they got a steal. Stastny has stabilized a powerful young line next to Laine and Ehlers as the line has helped guide them through the playoffs. Just against the Nashville Predators alone in the playoffs’ second round, Stastny practically beat the team on his own, putting up five goals and five assists in seven games. He has been effectively shut down by Vegas in four games as he’s only managed one assist, yet the veteran has been key to their playoff future.

The Hockey News’ Matt Larkin recently wrote a story wondering what the chances Stastny has of returning to Winnipeg next year. The unrestricted free agent is 32 years old, a point where long-term deals start to look questionable as many players in their 30’s begin to decline, especially with speed being emphasized by many teams. Unfortunately for Winnipeg, the free agent options at center will be very limited this year after the Islanders’ John Tavares, making Stastny the likely second-best free agent on the market. With many teams in need of a center, he could easily get a big deal and while maybe not as high as the $7MM a year he’s been making recently, but he should easily fetch $5MM per year with his next deal and if the team has to overpay to keep him, it could go as high as $6MM per year.

Then the question is whether Winnipeg can afford him. While the team has ample cap space at the moment, the Jets also have 14 players on their current roster who will either be restricted or unrestricted free agents. Many of their restricted free agents like Adam Lowry, Brandon Tanev, Joel Armia and Josh Morrissey should get solid raises, while others like Jacob Trouba and Connor Hellebuyck should get major contract extensions, likely taking up a large chunk of their available cap space, leaving little or no room for Stastny. Add to the fact that Laine, Kyle Connor and Tyler Myers all will need new contracts in one year, that leaves little wiggle room unless general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff can pull of a clever balancing act to keep everyone happy.

So, should Winnipeg try to keep Stastny around next year or just let him go?

Eastern Notes: Backstrom, Burakovsky, Sabres Goaltending, Schneider

With Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals approaching in a few hours and deadlocked at 2-2, the Washington Capitals will make a few lineup changes, according to NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti. The scribe writes that head coach Barry Trotz said he intends to return center Nicklas Backstrom to his second line to join T.J. Oshie and Chandler Stephenson. Backstrom, who finally returned for Game 4 against the Tampa Bay Lightning, played well in his return after a four-game absence. While he didn’t score any points, he played 18:51 of ice time and won six of nine faceoff attempts.

Gulitti also reported that Trotz said he will switch out Andre Burakovsky with the bigger, more physical Alex Chiasson on the team’s fourth line. Burakovsky has been back for four games after missing time with an injury. However, in those four games, he’s failed to score a point and only has had two shots on goal. In the last two games, he’s played just 7:26 and 8:30, respectively. Chiasson has one assist in three playoff games against the Lightning.

  • The Buffalo News’ Mike Harrington writes that the prevailing belief is that the Buffalo Sabres do not have a No. 1 goalie within their organization, meaning the team will have to find one through free agency or via trade to join Linus Ullmark. Harrington writes its very likely the team has seen the last of Robin Lehner and Chad Johnson, last year’s goalie tandem. The 26-year-old Lehner will be a restricted free agent and is not expected to receive an offer, while Johnson will be unrestricted.
  • After New Jersey Devils goaltender Cory Schneider listed his New Jersey house on the market recently, there was some speculation that he might be moving on, but NJ.com’s Chris Ryan writes that he’s not going anywhere as he’s just buying another house in the area. A career dominating goaltender, Schneider has struggled the past two years due to poor team defense and injuries. After putting up a 2.82 GAA and a .908 save percentage in the 2016-17 season and a 2.93 GAA and a .907 save percentage in the 2017-18 season, Schneider underwent surgery to repair cartilage in his left hip and is expected to miss training camp and possibly the start of the season. The 32-year-old has four years remaining on his deal at $6MM AAV.

Rangers In Discussions With David Quinn To Become Their Next Head Coach

12:46 p.m.: ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski tweets that the rumored five-year, $12MM deal isn’t finalized between the Rangers and Quinn. While a deal isn’t concrete, it’s still expected to happen. The scribe adds that it might have something to do with the fact that Gorton hasn’t returned from Denmark yet.

12:11 p.m.: New England Hockey Journal’s Jeff Cox reports that the Rangers and Quinn have come to an agreement in principle to have Quinn become the team’s head coach. The scribe writes that the deal would be a five-year deal worth $2.5MM per season.

Saturday, 11:40 a.m.: The New York Post’s Larry Brooks reports that two sources have told him that Quinn has signaled that he wants the New York Rangers job and barring a negotiating breakdown, the job is his. He adds that Gorton is expected back from Denmark on Monday.

Friday: The Rangers appear to have found their next target to replace Alain Vigneault.  This afternoon, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported (Twitter link) that the team was focusing on Boston University head coach David Quinn while TSN’s Bob McKenzie adds (Twitter link) that talks have advanced with Quinn to the point where he appears to be on his way towards becoming their next head coach although a deal has not been finalized as of yet.  He adds that GM Jeff Gorton is currently at the World Championships in Denmark so nothing is imminent.

Earlier this offseason, New York appeared to have their sights set on another college coach in Jim Montgomery.  However, the Stars stepped in and hired him as their replacement for Ken Hitchcock instead.

With the Rangers transitioning towards a younger roster, it makes sense that they would be looking for someone who is experienced working with younger players and Quinn certainly fits that bill.

He has spent the past five years at the college level but he does have experience coaching in the pros.  The 51-year-old spent three seasons as the head coach for Colorado’s then-AHL affiliate in Lake Erie before being promoted to an assistant at the NHL level for the 2012-13 campaign before he left for Boston University.  Quinn was named the Hockey East Coach of the Year in 2014-15 while this past season, the Terriers took home the Hockey East title.  Last month, he was named as head coach for Team USA’s entry into the 2019 World Juniors although he would relinquish that position should he get this position with New York.

Devils Closing In On Signing Yegor Yakovlev

While there has been rumors of the New Jersey Devils intention of signing KHL defenseman Yegor Yakovlev this offseason, no deal has happened. However, international journalist Igor Eronko spoke to New Jersey’s general manager Ray Shero, who confirmed that the team hopes to sign the defenseman after the IIHF World Championships.

“We haven’t officially signed him yet, but once IIHF Worlds is over, we’ll see coming back on Monday. Hopefully we can finalize something,” Shero said.

Yakovlev also said that he is eager to sign with the Devils, according to Eronko.

“The Devils have scouted me for 3 years,” Yakovlev said. “They really wanted to see me on the team. That’s why I chose New Jersey and I’m really happy to join the organization. I know they play a fast smart hockey and I like it.”

The 26-year-old defenseman could continue to add depth to a team that more than a year ago had little defensive options. In the last year, the team has upgraded some of its defenders with college free agent Will Butcher, who had a solid rookie season, as well as trading for Sami Vatanen from the Anaheim Ducks.

Yakovlev has spent the last three years playing for KHL powerhouse SKA St. Petersburg. He tallied five goals and nine points in 35 regular season games and also played in the Olympics this year in Pyeongchang for the Russian team that won the gold medal.

 

Blackhawks’ Marian Hossa Announces End Of Playing Career

Chicago Blackhawks star Marian Hossa, who sat out the 2017-18 season due to a skin disorder and the side effects of the medications that came with it, announced that his playing career is officially over to Slovakian site Novy cas, according to Chicago Sun Times’ Mark Lazerus. While Elite Prospects listed him as retired, The Athletic’s Scott Powers (subscription required) does not mention retirement, but adds that Hossa wants to join the Chicago Blackhawks’ front office in three years when his contract expires, suggesting that he will not file retirement paperwork until then, which would allow Chicago to keep the veteran on LTIR for the next three years.

“I will not play hockey anymore,” Hossa said. “I have a valid contract with Chicago for another three years, but I have only one health and it does not allow me to return.”

The 39-year-old played 19 seasons in the NHL, eight of which for the Blackhawks as a key contributor to three Stanley Cup titles. Hossa, a five-time all-star, has had a distinguished career as he’s posted 1,134 points in 1,309 games and has been touted as one of the best defensive forwards of the game. He had a productive season in 2016-17, his last, as he put up 26 goals and 19 assists.

General manager Stan Bowman confirmed at the end of the Blackhawks season last month that Hossa’s situation had not improved.

“What I do know is that his status is unchanged,” Bowman said. “His physical condition hasn’t improved, so at this point there’s no indication he’s going to play next year, either. That’s about all I know at this point. We’ll probably have more discussions on that in the coming weeks, but his medical condition is unchanged.”

Hossa, who has been listed on LTIR for the 2017-18 season, still has three years remaining on the 12-year, $63.3MM deal he signed in 2009, which counts for a $5.275MM cap hit. On LTIR, Chicago only has to pay $1MM in salary per season. Powers writes the team will likely attempt to trade Hossa to free themselves from his contract entirely.
